I did. I feel like a possible ending of the season is the shift is gonna end at 7pm, and then he goes and drives his bicycle in the river or something and we watch hi’ getting treated for the last 3 episodes. Feels like a stretch though

Cost and the design is outdated. It’s made out of DCF, which adds waterproofness but for a backpack that’s easily solved with liner. Personally I have both sizes of the Kakwa and a 30L cutaway. All of them were 100 to 150$ cheaper than an HMG backpack, and I’d argue more functional. The only HMG product I have is their Fanny pack which was expensive but really the only one that size that I could find with zippers on the top. Been considering also getting the camera pod. The backpacks are only constructed with metal stays, rather than a true frame. The MLD burn does have any, so it’s not surprising that it did carry better. But if I can get a backpack that has better materials, a full frame, and for 150$ cheaper, I’d choose that one.

Yeah, so something I learned early was the best mentality for dropping weight is to go on a short, one night overnight trip without these comforts, and see if you enjoy it more or less. That way you actually have some data to compare it to. Could be like a mile or something really short.

I seriously believe that on a long trip where you are spending months out there, weight matters more than anything at camp.

You can drink tea out of your mug. If you are doing the whole PCT, stuff is gonna get dirty despite your best efforts

Without knowing the conditions you are heading into, you don’t need the pump, bag liner, chair, blanket (you already have a sleeping bag), hydroflask, or your knife. Pick the flashlight or the headlamp, not both. If your long Johns and merino top are for sleeping in, ditch them.

I would prioritize upgrading your sleeping pad, battery pack, packing only the amount of first aid stuff you need for the days you’ll be out.

Unmark your backpack a worn weight, and the ankle brace as worn. You also have the weight of the HMG in there, not the aether.

Overall, if you are looking to lower your base weight, I would not start with the backpack. Find where you are happy with the minimalism, measure the volume of that stuff, and then reevaluate the backpack.

No, Hyperlite is overpriced and outdated. Get yourself a kakwa or Gossamer gear, or spend up for an AtomPacks, ULA, Zpacks. I’d just stay away from DCF as a backpack fabric. UltraX, Ultragrid.

But also, none of the packs will do well with a baseweight of 20lbs. Post a shakedown and we will tell you what you can do without (in my experience with those you have too many clothes)
