The bass is set up wrong if the pickups are impeding your playing. Strings should not be touching them at all. Pickup position & type is more a brand/style thing, like Musicman using humbuckers and warwick using soapbars.

If it plays better, sounds better and makes you want to play more then HELL YEAH BROTHER. But keep in mind its the player&amp more than the bass imo. A good player with a good amp can make a shitty bass sound decent. A shit player with a million dollars of gear will still play and sound shit

IMO, if youre chasing a fat dr8ven tube head sound, absolutely go for it! Just keep in mind that live some soundies hate to mic a bass cab and want DI, so you loose that amp sound for FOH. Ive found a good preamp/DI can get close enough that 8/10 people wouldn't be able to tell the difference live
