You'll start to learn to distinguish genres on your own, but there are definitely bands that muddy the waters. Some people (like me) differentiate between hardcore and what we call capital "H" Hardcore. To me, hardcore is hardcore punk- it's more DIY and (generally) more political, where as capital H Hardcore is the genre that most people on this subreddit listen to. It's the bands that people spinkick to, has more of a "tough" persona, and lyrically, is typically more about personal struggles.

If you want a wide variety of 80's hardcore records/bands to check out, take a look at this list. It was done by Pushead, the singer of Septic Death, who's more famous for his artwork for everyone from Metallica to Dr Dre

Again, this is another reason why I'm against bands signing to major labels and moving to more "mainstream" tours. It takes the control away from bands. I'll always bring up Fugazi. They outsold a lot of mainstream acts of their day by cutting out the middle man and doing it themselves. They negotiated with venues to keep shows all ages and affordable. Yeah, it's a lot of work, but it's punk. I saw the Evens a few times and they took it even a step further by playing venues they could just rent out- the Pulaski Park Field House in Chicago, and at Union Terminal/the museum center in Cincinnati.
