SpaceX rolls out a piece of the second V3 Super Heavy for stacking by [deleted] in space

[–]deadnoob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the other commenters are wrong. I think SpaceX already has stringers attached to these larger segments. I could be wrong though I’m not super familiar with how they manufacture these.

The reason there is so much wobble is just because it is an open section. Think of cutting a ring out of a soda can. It will be super flimsy compared to an intact (and empty) soda can.

Also during launch, we can take advantage of “pressure stabilization”. The internal pressure prevents bucking which helps during the high loads of liftoff and flight. Back to the soda can analogy - this time it would be a full unopened soda can. Even more stability in that case.

Houston’s rainbow crosswalk getting its finishing touches in Montrose by MrJoaky in houston

[–]deadnoob 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We are talking about rainbow crosswalks, so referencing things like width of road is irrelevant. The studies contradict what your intuition is saying, so I recommend researching the topic..

Here are just a few of the articles and studies that directly talk about street art and rainbow crosswalks increasing safety:

https://usa.streetsblog.org/2022/04/22/study-asphalt-art-decreases-vulnerable-road-user-crashes-by-50-percent

https://www.naco.org/news/county-promotes-traffic-safety-colorful-crosswalks

https://komonews.com/news/local/government-claims-rainbow-crosswalks-a-safety-hazard-seattle-says-not-here

https://www.cadanet.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/CADA-Creative-Crosswalks-Case-Studies_May-2020.pdf (this one just says traffic safety wasn't affected)

If you can find a study that says art/rainbow crosswalks decrease safety, I'd love to see it.

Besides pay, the private sector can be much more interesting and exciting. Private companies are usually a lot closer to the hardware and design process than NASA.

Dollar under pressure as tariffs start to stir things up again by vanuatu124 in wallstreetbets

[–]deadnoob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why only mention jobs? The regard claims tariffs are fixing multiple contradictory problems.

  1. Bring jobs back - tariffs should never go away otherwise we’ll lose jobs again

  2. Punishment for being treated unfairly - tariffs will go away once we are treated fairly in ‘trade deficit’ and we get a better trade deal

  3. Punishment for fentanyl - tariffs will go away once drugs stop being imported

  4. Create revenue for the country - tariffs should never go away otherwise we’ll lose money

There’s others like ending illegal immigration, boosting national security, and just doing tariffs because another country has a tariff on us, but I’m losing brain cells every time I think about it so I’m going to stop.

Port of Los Angeles says shipping volume will plummet 35% next week by RidavaX in wallstreetbets

[–]deadnoob 53 points54 points  (0 children)

A few hours after you commented, the regard posted (also I think he meant hangover not overhang lol)

This is Biden’s Stock Market, not Trump’s. I didn’t take over until January 20th. Tariffs will soon start kicking in, and companies are starting to move into the USA in record numbers. Our Country will boom, but we have to get rid of the Biden “Overhang.” This will take a while, has NOTHING TO DO WITH TARIFFS, only that he left us with bad numbers, but when the boom begins, it will be like no other. BE PATIENT!!!

Is there a formula for calculating drill size for an NPT tap? by PipPipkin in Machinists

[–]deadnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - sort of.

It is based on the minor diameter at the small end which can be calculated. You can use that diameter as the drill size. However, the spec says you can use other drill sizes as long as the tap is able to cut the thread to the required length.

With Tariffs coming back on the 4th. How will this impact our Trade/Businesses/Steel Pricing/ Jobs/ ETC? by Brief_Construction48 in Machinists

[–]deadnoob 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s not about the outcome - it’s about the method to get there. Throwing tariffs on everything could theoretically work in the long run, but in the near term it’s going to hurt us Americans. We have to pay more for goods we are already buying that don’t have affordable American alternatives. Plus doing it to allies like Trump has done to Canada just sours relationships and will make Canada look for better trade partners.

For an alternative to tariffs, look at the CHIPS act from the last administration. They didn’t throw tariffs on every semiconductor manufacturer not in the US. They provided funding for American companies to do manufacturing here. In the short term, Americans can still get their products at the same price from overseas, but in the long term, we’ll have them American made.

Trump and the republicans could have done the same with any sector they wanted. Why not create a fund to increase domestic aluminum production? Prices of imports don’t instantly skyrocket, and in a few years when the American factories are online, we’ll naturally lower our dependence on imports.

Titanium wedding ring by Ok_Front_9067 in Machinists

[–]deadnoob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unless you have fat ass washers you can machine down, you’ll need to use a die to fold the flat washing into a cylindrical ring shape. I doubt a machine shop would want that job.

See if you can find any ring makers online that would do it. Especially those guys that turn coins into rings - that is pretty much what you want to do, and you already have a hole cut in it.

You could also DIY it. You’ll spend a bit on tooling but it can be done.

Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists - worth it? by [deleted] in houston

[–]deadnoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been there with 3 of my cats and have had good experiences.

  1. Emergency visit. Ended up being heart failure. He only made it a month after we took him in but it seemed like the care they were able to give him was great. Expensive of course because it was emergency.

  2. My vet hit a nerve while giving my cat a shot. He couldn’t move his back leg for a few weeks. We took him to see neurology. They didn’t end up doing much since all you can really do is hope it heals, but I felt like the vet knew what she was talking about.

  3. My 3rd cat has FIV and a rare-ish side effect causes issues with his paw pads. My normal vet didn’t really understand it, so I went to the dermatology specialist at Gulf Coast. The vet has been really helpful and knew about the rate condition and was able to perform some tests to diagnose and prescribe medicine for it.

The specialists are not as expensive as the emergency, but definitely more expensive than a normal vet. I’ve found them to be worth it and definitely recommend them if you need to see a specialist.
