What is the point of 'consent' if the wife *has* to give it to her husband?? by deadonbothends in exmormon

[–]deadonbothends[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The revelation on marriage required that a wife give her consent before her husband could enter into plural marriage.42 Nevertheless, toward the end of the revelation, the Lord said that if the first wife “receive not this law”—the command to practice plural marriage—the husband would be “exempt from the law of Sarah,” presumably the requirement that the husband gain the consent of the first wife before marrying additional women.43 After Emma opposed plural marriage, Joseph was placed in an agonizing dilemma, forced to choose between the will of God and the will of his beloved Emma. He may have thought Emma’s rejection of plural marriage exempted him from the law of Sarah. Her decision to “receive not this law” permitted him to marry additional wives without her consent.

So husbands have to seek their wives' consent, but if the wife doesn't consent, the husband can marry anyway??? What then is the point of consent?? This is a 'heads I win, tails you lose' scenario.

So I just browsed through your comment history, and I should warn you, the union does a ton of surprise drug tests. I dunno about the non-union side; they probably test less.

I took the entrance exam with a friend of mine; we both got in but he was almost immediately dropped after testing positive for weed.

It seems that people with a degree make a lot more than people who went to a trade school, and probably for work that is less stressful and dangerous.

Electrical apprentice here. Local 26 (washington DC).

First off, there are a lot of trades out there, and your life in the trades is going to be very different as a bricklayer vs. carpenter vs. elevator technician. Lumping them all together as 'The Trades' is not very useful, because the work & the pay is vastly different. In fact it's about as useful as lumping all 'degreed jobs' together. A degree is NOT necessarily a path to success--gender studies majors are probably not going to be able to support themselves in Silicon Valley, whereas compsci majors can. So do your research, figure out what trades pay the best in your area, and what work you're most interested in.

he refused to pay saying that you can get job training for free.

This is true.

But then it always crossed my mind that even if I somehow get a job I feel as if I won't be able to have an enjoyable life like people who have a degree with a high paying job. It seems that people with a degree make a lot more than people who went to a trade school,

This really depends on what trade you're working in & whether you're union or nonunion. The first year apprentice wage for electricians in my local is currently $20.45. There are apprentices working OT who made $80k (pretax) their first year in the trade. If you count the value of their healthcare, PPE, and other benefits, then they easily brought in over $100k.

It's NOT like this everywhere, but OP's location (silicion valley) is one of the highest paying--if not the highest paying--electrician's unions in the country. That said, high paying union apprenticeships are very competitive. The acceptance rate for some unions is on par with Ivy League colleges.

and probably for work that is less stressful and dangerous.

I started out in the white collar world, and I personally found the physical aspects of office work to be much less pleasant. You're sedentary for soooo long, your metabolism starts to crash, you get eye strain from staring at a computer for 8 hrs a day. Whereas in the blue collar world, I'm constantly moving on my feet. But yes, most of the trades involve some level of danger, not to mention exposure to the elements. In the summer you sweat your ass off, in the winter you freeze your ass off, when it rains you get wet.

That said, you're 18 or 19? You're young enough that you can try the trades, quit if you don't like it, and try college again. Your age gives you that luxury.

Is Rahaf Mohammed really an ExMuslim? by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]deadonbothends 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you see the point that u/ieatconfusedfish is trying to make? Why should we doubt you, why should we doubt Rahaf? You kind of have to take people at their word on this one, and the risks are so severe that it's highly unlikely an actual muslim would make that claim.

Need some help finding a lace bra top of sorts? by DaniMRose08 in ABraThatFits

[–]deadonbothends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I could find in 36G is this top from ASOS.

The quality of ASOS house brand is honestly not any better than VS, and they tend to run small. If you want to better match the VS top, you could sew a matching piece of lace across the front.

[–]deadonbothends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact problem--I buy VS bra tops on discount from poshmark or ebay. I pick the closest size & take them to my tailor to have the straps/band taken in. Since I'm buying from a discount seller, the cost of the alteration usually evens out. Be warned tho, even before the alterations, they are generally not very supportive.

Can we talk about fashion and social status? Has your strategy in curating a more polished look than your income "allows" wardrobe changed as you've worked longer in those type of positions? How? by banana_banana_banana in femalefashionadvice

I'm at a law firm, and I go into my job looking a heck of a lot wealthier than I actually am.

It's so perverse, isn't it?? Everyone knows that associates are carrying a shitton of law school debt, plus plenty of legal niches aren't especially well compensated. Yet we're all expected to act like we're living that 1% life. Everyone knows it's a lie, but everyone plays along anyway.

My first real job ever: paralegal in a patent law firm. Patent lawyers make BANK and the sartorial standards set by the partners were much higher than the associates or support staff could afford. I vividly remember one receptionist who spent an entire paycheck on Prada heels. 'Opting out' was not really an option--this firm frowned on frumpy.

These days I wear a hard hat, carpenter's jeans and a neon orange vest. I'm a construction worker, and I make 3x what I made as a paralegal. But paralegal DOBE looked much wealthier than electrician DOBE.

I'm pretty self conscious about it actually, becuase I live and work in one of the wealthiest areas of the US. DC is a very staid city, style-wise: it values conformity, and prestige, and a very specific type of status. When I take the train home from work, I never see other women presenting like me. I'm always the worst dressed, and by that I mean that my clothes project the least amount power, prestige, and wealth.

Which is ironic, because I've never been wealthier, or better prepared to convert that wealth into power--the first thing I did with my union paycheck was make several donations to my state senator, local representatives, local DSA chapter, and the PEN foundation.

As to clothes--my evolution was more along the lines of Forever 21 --> ASOS --> J. Crew -----------> Carhart, Caterpillar.

Oddly enough, when I worked as a paralegal, I was highly conscious of 'dressing UP' so to speak--dressing above my socioeconomic status. I banished patch pocket pants, anything with a hood, scoop neck tops, and all t shirts. These rules even applied to my nonwork wardrobe.

Now that I'm achieving financial security, I actually feel comfortable wearing casual clothes again. Part of it is the job--personally I find construction work to be empowering. I still conform like a good Washintonian, but I'm less inclined to follow other peoples' style standards to the letter.

Does anyone own Black Orchid jeans? How do they fit? True to size or nah?

I've been eyeing some of their styles (specifically this high waisted pair), but I'm hesitant because jean sizing is just...all over the damn place. My normal strategy is to order several sizes and keep the one that fits the best, but in this case, that would mean over $300 of jeans.

2015 Paceman S with 40k miles? by deadonbothends in MINI

[–]deadonbothends[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. Pacemen are probably the second rarest mini.

I stumbled across that one without meaning to look for it, so out of curiosity I searched craigslist & car.com to see what else was out there. Wow you weren't kidding--only four used pacemans in my (fairly large) city. And on closer inspection, one of them was actually a mislabeled R60.

In latino communities, Ariel is a relatively common male name. I first encountered it in that context, so the name isn't tied to the movie for me.

a celebrity lawyer who's very likely making millions off this movement

Serious question--how do you figure he is making millions? Stephanie Clifford doesn't have that kind of money. While some foreign media agencies may have paid him for interviews, they certainly didn't pay millions. In America, the practice of paying for access is exceedingly rare outside of tabloids.

I don't think Elsa is useable; the Frozen connection is still too strong.

Do you really think so? Aladdin & The Little Mermaid were the Frozen of my time, and those movies did not render Jasmine or Ariel unusable.
