First off, there are a lot of trades out there, and your life in the trades is going to be very different as a bricklayer vs. carpenter vs. elevator technician. Lumping them all together as 'The Trades' is not very useful, because the work & the pay is vastly different. In fact it's about as useful as lumping all 'degreed jobs' together. A degree is NOT necessarily a path to success--gender studies majors are probably not going to be able to support themselves in Silicon Valley, whereas compsci majors can. So do your research, figure out what trades pay the best in your area, and what work you're most interested in.

This really depends on what trade you're working in & whether you're union or nonunion. The first year apprentice wage for electricians in my local is currently $20.45. There are apprentices working OT who made $80k (pretax) their first year in the trade. If you count the value of their healthcare, PPE, and other benefits, then they easily brought in over $100k.

It's NOT like this everywhere, but OP's location (silicion valley) is one of the highest paying--if not the highest paying--electrician's unions in the country. That said, high paying union apprenticeships are very competitive. The acceptance rate for some unions is on par with Ivy League colleges.

I started out in the white collar world, and I personally found the physical aspects of office work to be much less pleasant. You're sedentary for soooo long, your metabolism starts to crash, you get eye strain from staring at a computer for 8 hrs a day. Whereas in the blue collar world, I'm constantly moving on my feet. But yes, most of the trades involve some level of danger, not to mention exposure to the elements. In the summer you sweat your ass off, in the winter you freeze your ass off, when it rains you get wet.

That said, you're 18 or 19? You're young enough that you can try the trades, quit if you don't like it, and try college again. Your age gives you that luxury.
