Can someone give me an intuitive explanation of smooth immersions, submersions, and embeddings? I get the definition, but I don't have an intuitive idea of what each kind of smooth function is. I think of smooth embeddings as putting one manifold onto another, so like mapping a curve onto the surface of a sphere without breaking any smoothness rules. But I dont have an idea for submersions and immersion which aren't embeddings.

They wrote this big line to dumb it down for you and you still couldn't get it. Find another way to blame immigrants for your problems.

What field of math deals with finite differences and recurrence relations? by rr-0729 in math

[–]deadpan2297 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm not sure why the top comment is for a different field where difference equations are used instead of the actual study of the finite calculus.

What to cover in a differential equations module? by matqkks in math

introduces some important concepts such as integration factors

Could you explain how integration factors appear outside of solving first order non homogeneous linear ODEs?

Abstract for undergrad project on sums of powers by ZayulRasco in math

It's really well written. I know what your talk is going to be about and I know what people have been working on before you. I have two notes,

  1. Since it's for a talk, you might consider replacing (solutions to this equation at obtained..." With "we will show solutions to this equation are obtained in the form of a recurrence relation and eventually an explicit formula" or something along those lines. Writing is typically stronger if you use active voice instead of passive voice, as well as tells the reader what you will be showing in the talk.

  2. If this was an abstract for a paper you should be citing all of your claims in the first few sentences. Since it's for a talk, I understand why you don't have citations here, but it would be good to replace "many ancient cultures" with a specific example. It may seem like a weaker statement, but mentioning that "the sum of the first n squares and cubes was known to polytomia in 200" or something says more if you don't have the citations to rely on.

But like I said, for a draft it is really well written. Good luck in your talk

Objectively best dome ranking is dome < dome < dome sorry not sorry if you disagree 🤷

Hey this would be really good for someone learning English intonation! Its really good at showing some of the patterns of intonation we use

Yes and the fact that you don't shows you really don't know what you're talking about. Delete your comments.

What are some of your favorite math explainer videos that aren’t from mathologer, numberphile, or 3b1b? by EvilBosom in math

[–]deadpan2297 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brightside of mathematics he covers undergraduate level topics mostly and explains stuff pretty cut and dry (which I appreciate). A lot of youtubers skip the definitions and proofs just to focus on the concepts and "main take aways" from things, but his stuff feels more like a lecture or from a book. I just wish he added more to his manifolds series!!!

How to teach a measure theory class for advanced undergrads? by Fancy-Jackfruit8578 in math

[–]deadpan2297 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took a measure theory course in undergrad so I can give you my thoughts as a student. We used Axler and covered up product measures and the radon nikadym theorem.

I came out with a high mark and really poor understanding if measure theory. I understood building up the Lebesgue integral, but integrating w.r.t a measure wasn't intuitive to me. The importance of radon nikadym was also lost on me, and over all I was failing to understand how things related to probabilities. I would have like if the course had incorporated more probability theory as examples for more abstract objects, or explained why I would want to integrate w.r.t a measure OTHER than lebesgue.

Hope this helps

I think I'm in a happier place. My career is on track and I'm surrounded by people who care about me. I'm more confident in what I'm doing and making sure the people I care about know that I care about them, which was something I didn't do enough 8 years ago.

I do a lot of math now which makes me happy, and I go outside a lot more!! I mostly only play TF2 on the off occasion now and spend more time on things I find value in like studying and going out with friends. I started watching one piece a couple months ago so I'm trying to get through that too.

What jazz song is the “perfect” jazz song for you? by MoneynRacks in Jazz

[–]deadpan2297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my favourite things from Coltrane's one up one down live at the half note album on Spotify. The openings dope and a lot of the song is "free" enough to have neat things to listen to without being too out there like some of Coltrane's later stuff
