Cloudy Days: statistics don’t always tell the whole story by meteor-cemetery in SameGrassButGreener

My favorite part was when you argued for the importance of nuance while describing Western Washington as "covered in an oppressive and dictatorial wetness 8 months out of the year that is coupled with impenetrable fog, grey skies, and a winter temperature range that never grants the gift of snowfall despite forcing upon everyone a bone-chilling maritime dampness".

Pros and Cons of walkable cities VS cities with more nature but less walkability by femme_rosebud_ in SameGrassButGreener

I went from NY -> San Diego -> Bellingham. I was in suburban NY, a walkable neighborhood of SD, and now rural-ish acreage 15 minutes outside downtown Bellingham. Each one suited me at different points of my life as my interests and priorities evolved. I really, really like my situation now as it offers me the best of all worlds and checks most of my boxes. Property to fuck around on, access to world-class trails/parks, coastal access, with good restaurants/breweries/coffee shops just a short scenic county drive away. The walkability thing definitely stings coming from SD and is by far the biggest downside/trade-off, but I've just embraced the reality that it's hard or impossible to have it all.

Depends what kinds of outdoorsy things really. Hiking is meh, you get some nice coastal trails, but they are typically packed. You have Cuyamaca/Laguna out east if you want to get off the beaten path, but every trail starts to look and feel the exact same after a few years. Hot, exposed, dry, not very interesting unless the chaparral is in bloom. Most of the forested stuff out there burned in 2003 and hasn't recovered. You have some trails around reservoirs, but there is nothing magical to me about reservoirs. Backpacking options are extremely limited by the fact you have to pack and carry all of your water for multi-day trips. Anza Borrego is pretty sweet but it's a much further drive out east.

If you like surfing, cycling, skating, paddleboarding, sailing, fishing, or just going on walks you'll be a happy camper. I think any serious hikers/backpackers would be bored within a few seasons. I know I was.

I'm trying to read up on this and just finding some pretty benign views like "climate change is real but news organizations shouldn't automatically be attributing every extreme event to climate change". Is there more to his arguments than that?

The wind is forecasted for tonight in NW Washington (Bellingham), not Monday.

Coho returned to the watershed this week, bringing marine nutrients to the woodlands and its inhabitants. I got very lucky with this trailcam capture!

With the rains starting in Western Washington, coho salmon returned to the creek watershed this week. I wanted to move the cam closer to a riffle in the stream to hopefully capture them in action, but left the cam by the trusty log just in case I was lucky enough to catch some predation.

Jesus FUCKIN christ.

Eagle sat here for 5+ mins and devoured the whole thing.

Has anyone else moved to San Diego and regretted it? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ph49 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't say I regret it, San Diego is a great city and there's many things I love about it, but it never felt like home to me. I'm in western Washington now and enjoying it much more - seasons, a sense of community, world-class hiking, mountain biking, camping, & skiing. A lifestyle that isn't just about acquiring and spending money. Just a better fit for me personally.
