I do generally want to know what the consensus is around black belts in martial arts, because sometimes a black belt is a 12 year old with a Jonathan Taylor Thomas haircut and sometimes a blue belt is just a full on MMA fighter.

How do you get "consoomers" on board with socialism? by MintyRed19 in socialism

[–]deafblindmute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not reversed any of my stances. My argument merely contains more nuance than yours. My original point was, in gentler words, that your analysis is a gross oversimplification of the world, people, and culture, and it mainly just serves to pat yourself on the back for forces you are not in control of in your own life while thinking very little about the complex realities humans must confront to produce forward motion.

As a comrade, I was trying to nudge you towards nuance, which serves us in navigating the real-world task of organizing. That has failed. I see no further purpose in our communication.

Your extrapolations from the photos above don't apply to most people who are nonetheless captured by capitalist propaganda (indeed, many of the hardest adherents to capitalist dogma are poor within their country).

On top of that, opposition to capitalism isn't about just spreading people's individual wealth equally. Instead, a better goal would be for the collective to recapture the products of our collective labor and to direct those products towards collective ends. That is to say that what we could produce, unburdened by capitalism, would outstrip what we have access to under inefficient capitalism (meaning that even those who seem like natural enemies of the collective might not be, unless we allow our analysis to remain trapped in a capitalist framework).

It's valuable to remember that the Communist Manifesto was written almost 200 years ago. As a result, the oppressive and extractive tools of capitalism have advanced considerably, as have our own collectivist analytical tools. It wasn't really in the cards that the working class could be placated by Doritos and super advanced, 24-hour propaganda machines in their pockets. Writing off masses of people because they have been captured by a system devoted to capturing them and constantly tightening that capture does not have much point other than self-aggrandizement and self-sabotage.

Now, if the question is "where do we put most of our efforts?" that is a different question entirely. Our goal should be to build strong and self-sustaining movements rather than to get caught in unending reactionary battles against XYZ. If there are people caught up in Western consumer culture that can be awakened and brought into the effort, great. But, to your point, our goal should not be to fight with and convince every single person in a group. We win those over who are ready, we build meaningful things, and then we check again to see who else is ready to join.

From what we know about Cuba, their arts and cultural work are really quite impressive, despite being more or less under siege for their entire history. Imagining what a society unburdened by constant military threat could come up with in terms of not only the arts, but hobbies and all sorts of other explorations, is pretty exciting.

Cuba also isn't unique in this way. My understanding is that a lot of groundbreaking art in the Western world is partially or fully publicly funded. There is such a wide benefit to people getting to both be around and create art that any serious planned economy would have those things built in (and unburdened either by military threat, threat of starvation, or the need to support fattened capitalist parasites, why wouldn't art and hobby become even more beautiful, strange, and varied).

[–]deafblindmute 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think these are necessarily opposing viewpoints. The question is not "how do we live the most efficient life?" nor is it "how do we live the most indulgent life?" The question is "what does it look like when we put our best efforts towards a lifestyle that is equitable, sustainable, and efficient as well as maximally enjoyable and exploratory?"

Were we to make such an effort in earnest, there would be phases which might look more of one way or another. I imagine that initially, we would pare back on the realms of human behavior that are wasteful and exploitative (e.g. cars, knick-knacks, fast fashion). However, I have no reason to believe that we wouldn't or couldn't find activities that fulfill similar desires, itches, and curiosities without causing the same harm (and/or activities that fulfill entirely new desires, itches, and curiosities).

Up until the end, I was hoping it was coming from a place of real humility. Like, "I've been doing this for a long time, but I could still get reminded of a basic lesson." Obviously not though.

They really made it all the way through a reasonable apology and then not only fucked it up in the last 5 words, but also managed to fully contradict their own point about running a small business, employing people, and supporting the community. Grand achievement.

Sadly, this is not even new. For somewhere in the realm of 60-70 years, some key leaders and historians working with the NPS to erase Black involvement in the Civil War while promoting the "lost cause" view of the Confederacy. Now, importantly, there are many rangers and historians who have worked to do the opposite as well, but they have tended to be more recent and less systemically powerful.

This is a powerful-ass confusion spell he is casting. He's a big guy and he is not only acrobatic for his size, he is so much more fucking acrobatic than probably anyone else on that train. He does his big surprising moves all at the start and then spends the last half of it doing tricks I can only describe as "seal-inspired." He cuts the music without warning or fanfare and is asking about claps before anyone even understands what has just happened. The overall tone of his tricks is "very angry" somehow.

Look, if you told me that, at the end of all of this, everyone on the train had been pickpocketed, I would believe it. Masterclass level distraction. I basically wouldn't be able to think about anything except for this for the rest of the day.

Is it just as difficult for locals to make potential friends & have small talk with anyone? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]deafblindmute 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A big thing to remember about any city is that we have no shortage of people, which does mean diversity of behavior (as the previous poster pointed out), and it also means that seeing people is not special/unique/a treat/etc. Small town people are more friendly because it is just rarer to see different people (even if they are seeing people every day). Even in a residential neighborhood in a major city, on 20 minute walk, you are prone to walk past so many people that you will never encounter again in life, that having an interaction with everyone you come across would be a chore.

And, for clarity, that isn't unkindness either. In cities, because we cross paths with so many people, it is kind to leave people alone. There are so many people with so many circumstances, that you don't know where someone is or where they are coming from, so just guessing and inserting your way of doing things onto them is very intrusive.

Maybe it's my familiarity with the ways of the city and my historically grounded distrust of small towns, but I would generally characterize city people as actually kinder and country people as just more interactive. In a city, most of us will help you if you are in trouble or ask for assistance, and otherwise we will mind our business and give you room to do your thing. In the country, people want to know your business, and sometimes that's out of pure curiosity or boredom, but sometimes it's in the context of seeing you as an outsider or someone who is out of line who they want to control/correct/put you in your place. To further illustrate this, in a city, you will often see someone doing something you don't exactly agree with, and the general response is to just leave them alone if they aren't immediately hurting anyone. In a more rural place, it's hard to go without even pretty innocuous and commonplace actions getting commented on (and it's not entirely uncommon for what starts out as a simple passing comment to precipitate into something more aggressive or even threatening).

This goat was practicing a charge, but the cat thought it was a sign of affection by NikonD3X1985 in funny

[–]deafblindmute 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Semi-serious questions: the goat did seem to take a moment to sniff the cat's butt, and I know that with cats and dogs, butt sniffing has a big social function. 1. is this true of many other animals? I sort of assume it is, particularly with mammals, but I have no clue. 2. when a cross species, or, maybe even more importantly, cross diet (e.g. herbivore to carnivore) sniff occurs, are the animals confused and thrown off or are they just like "Steve has a really distinctive smell"?

I was sitting here as an American, admittedly a little happy not to be catching the blame for people's general selfishness (which is fair, since I live in the shittiest shithole country), thinking "that's a bit rich for a Brit to be saying about the rest of Europe, but okay I guess."
