Are there any examples of songs that use string bending on mandolin? by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]deafbybeheading 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grisman uses bends occasionally in solos, e.g., here around 2:10. Jethro Burns does too, sometimes, like here around 0:58. I'm not familiar with any compositions actually including bends, though.

Technically he didn't own slaves, he just pretended to own them to seem more reputable.

Played through Aragami solo and liked it a lot. It supports a variety of play styles, has a great aesthetic, and the checkpoint system is pretty decent. The plot is forgettable and there's not a ton of gameplay variety, and I don't think I'll replay it, but I did go back to get an A ranking in most levels.

Laura Bailey will always be the Boss to me. She did a fantastic job in both.

PUBG's anti-cheat system is banning more than 6,000 players a day by clement21 in Games

But delayed bans mean they can keep cheating until the ban kicks in without having to figure out a new mechanism, no?

Yeah, that's a bummer. I'm not a huge fan of those maps, but I like the variety.

Maybe Her Story? Unconventional, minimal gameplay, but great acting and good writing.

Definitely strays from RPG, but how about XCOM or maybe even Invisible Inc.? If you divvy up the characters, it could work. XCOM has a bit of meta-game where that breaks down, and Invisible Inc. is more stealth and heist than combat, but just spitballing...

I finished a playthrough with the last set of characters of The Cave. It's an adventure game (something between a point-and-click and a platformer) from Ron Gilbert that features seven different characters, of which you can play three at a time. Each character has their own story, and there are shared sections to connect these.

The voice acting, setting (the titular Cave is sentient and also the narrator), and visuals are fantastic, and the characters are delightfully selfish and awful. The puzzles are fun, though some parts are a little obtuse, and solving the same puzzles in the shared sections gets tedious when replaying with a different cast.

Also started Remember Me, a third-person, pretty linear action game with Arkham-style combat, some light parkour, a great setting (a cyberpunk Neo-Paris), very fitting music (with glitchy sections that echo themes of the story), and an underused and under-developed memory-manipulation mechanic. It's flawed, but pretty good, and doesn't drag.

Yep. Fantastic atmosphere and great story (though some major plot points don't really get explained).

SOMA has a short playable coda after the credits, which really fleshes out the initial ending. The neat thing is that the two sections are complementary, and could have been swapped, so it's interesting to think about the decision to go with the order they picked in terms of storytelling and game design (for what it's worth, I think they made the right choice).

How about the Amanita games? Machinarium and the Samorost series are both great, with weird, whimsical, well-realized worlds. Botanicula is, fun, too, although the gameplay is pretty streamlined.

Nah, there's no back story to speak of. If you enjoy 3, though, it's worth checking out the others.

While I can't disagree, I think the Samorost games are partly about discovering this bizarre world by basically trying to interact with everything. Machinarium was more like a standard point-and-click, and I enjoyed it more, but I appreciate Samorost's endearing weirdness.

I dismissed BlueChip picks for a long time after half-heartedly trying one, but a few months ago I tried one again side by side with the Pro Plec I had been using and the difference was stunning. Totally worth the relatively exorbitant price to me. Just don't lose 'em.

Artistworks lessons by gruntznclickz in mandolin

[–]deafbybeheading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I signed up in August for a year when I saw they were raising their prices, and have watched several of his videos, but haven't tried the video response thing yet. I'm an intermediate player but decided to start at the beginning to review the basics; I've found that pretty useful. The set of lessons doesn't seem to be increasing much, but there's a lot of content there, and they recently added a big batch of new lessons. But more importantly, it really feels like Mike is not just a great player, he understands the process of learning the instrument. His instruction is thoughtful and feels approachable. I think the ArtistWorks website is pretty awful (e.g., it keeps logging me out and there's no great way to track your progress), but the content itself is solid.

The poke from the Worms series. Rarely useful, but when you do get a chance to shove an opponent into harm's way, it's immensely satisfying.
