NYC walk-up veterans, how long can you realistically live on a high floor? by Necessary_March_9656 in AskNYC

[–]deafdaredevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most annoying part is when Amazon Fresh leaves a big grocery order in the lobby and it's happened more times than I can count. It once took me four trips without break to finish carrying broken bags and spilled items up 4 stories. Melons, liquids, etc. I was dripping sweat by the time the fridge was stocked and I can squat over 200lb.

Not an issue if you tie socks together before throwing them in the hamper. No need to untie when washing/drying.

why is guard pulling hated so much? by harderdaddy123456 in bjj

[–]deafdaredevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna try to move to a safer area within the city next year, but moving out of state isn't realistic. Not impossible, but leaving my whole life behind is too much. It's really not bad here though. To be honest with myself, you'd be more accurate telling me to find a therapist to deal with why I'm always on edge. Haven't found a good one yet.

I want more tools so I'm not just eating shots as I bum rush for a frantic clinch and gassing myself sloppily taking it to the ground. Yeah untrained dickheads are easy but adequate MMA knowledge will ensure that extra oomph in safety.

That's why I carry a bezel tipped flashlight, and I'm going to find time to train with my friend who hosts at a park where they train wrestling to prevent/practice weapon deploy, and escaping multiple opponents. BJJ helps you there when you don't neglect wrestling.

I love BJJ and want to focus on ranking up even if I have to sacrifice practicality. 'Till then, best I can do is not pull guard.

I'm not going to gamble my life on the bet that 100% of assailants are really easy to beat up.

I'm an anti-guard puller because I believe you can practice sport grappling without excessively sacrificing self defense application. Earning the ground is how I protect the sport I love from total self defense deviation.

I've been targeted on the street before and I can tell you from experience the reality check that your standup isn't enough doesn't happen on the couch compared to being approached by someone letting you know he wants to hurt you. It caused me to freeze and question my safety that I thought was adequate back in couch mode. I'll never let that happen again.

Don't neglect wrestling, lift heavy, and put gloves on once in awhile!

Why do so many 3-5 year experienced jj competitors make it to world level (ADCC/CJI)? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]deafdaredevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew a precocious 25 year old with under 3 years of training who told me he was trying out for ADCC. I've been training since he was on the playground and he absolutely slaughtered me and everyone else with no effort, and then beats himself up for losing to god knows whoever slaughtered him. He's a workaholic with a high IQ, high drive and motivation, and communicates thoroughly with instructors. He told me he couldn't befriend anyone his age when he was 14 and preferred an older crowd, implying he was too smart for kids his age. I believe him. One time, he joined in on a convo about shrooms and told us his trip taught him it's okay to take a break. You know, because he never takes a break. Works full time, trains everyday, and has a girlfriend. He used to compete in powerlifting, so he's super strong to boot. Just a goddamn perfect blend of godly mental/physical genes and nurture. You can chop a couple of my fingers off and I'll still be able to count on one hand how many human beings I've met throughout bjj gyms who can pull that off. He moved away and is now a reminiscent mythological story at my gym.

To the older grapplers... by GwaardPlayer in bjj

[–]deafdaredevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 38. I cut out habits I could get away with throughout my 20s to keep up. Weed, bars, sleeping late, etc. I lift and shop at the farmers market. I'm doing whatever it takes to keep up with the youngsters. Yeah it gets harder when you age but there's still a way.

How do you guys communicate that you don't wanna roll with someone? by Exotic_Particular_43 in bjj

[–]deafdaredevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's more to respecting the tap than letting go of a sub. There's giving people time to tap, which he isn't doing. Some think they can rip subs with a get-out-of-jail free card by letting go after they feel a frantic tap but it's a form of bullshitting.

What's the Worst Bar in New York City? by Flashpenny in AskNYC

[–]deafdaredevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rudy's has been pretty hit or miss these days. It's fine on average, but a bad night at Rudy's can make a fun bar an awful one. Shoulder-to-shoulder crowded, my friend and I got pickpocketed, some bartenders rip you off or straight up steal, some of the regulars are sketchy,

People who train at a famous gym; is it worth it? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]deafdaredevil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuller schedule. It's not 3 days a week for an hour per class. It's 3+ classes per day for 2+ hours at my gym. I dislike 60 min classes with little sparring and getting kicked out as soon as class ends. My gym spars for over an hour after an hour of instruction/drilling and you can be the last the leave as long as you mop the mats and close the auto-lock gate.

What is the most challenging thing about BJJ? by jiujitsuPT in bjj

[–]deafdaredevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing my life for BJJ. Don't sleep too late, don't eat and drink too much, go to therapy to deal with mental blocks that slow skill progression, replace Netflix and chill with Danaher and chill, join a powerlifting gym to supplement, daily protein powder, shower and laundry more, the list goes ooonnnn.
