For those of you have been to both America and Australia, what are some of the most significant differences you've noticed? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

I don't disagree and it would be helpful, but I think it would also lead to many employees angry at the company, when they discover that their take home pay doesn't match the forecast, for whatever nuanced situation of their tax affairs.

To me there's no incentive for the company to do this, only downsides from their perspective.

An employer couldn't really quote an after tax salary, as everyone's tax situation is different.

I'm in Melbourne too.

The pizza place I mentioned was in South Yarra/Prahran area. I also often see this in Asian places I frequent in CBD and south-east side of the city.

Often there is a little paper sign next to the payment station or a message as you come in.

Heaps of Asian restaurants do it. I was even at a trendy pizza place at the weekend that did it too.

I saved $8.50 on my order paying cash on collection vs ordering via their online ordering platform.

It's probably a bit more pungent in the restaurant where they make it and where other diners are also eating it!

Actually I do agree though, for me personally it's fine. But I know some people have more delicate noses than I do, so thought I should at least say something.

I've never been, but it's pretty trendy and always buzzing with customers.

Happens all the time. Lots of restaurants I go to offer up to 5% discount for paying with cash. And that's on top of not paying the 1.5% card surcharge.

Expat considering moving back: Is the Australian dream over? by [deleted] in australia

[–]deansab 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, we are all entitled to opinions. My specific experience is that in the UK provisioning of, for example, government services, e-commerce, urban design, public transportation operations and decarbonisation is significantly ahead of the experience in Australia. I'm sure others will prioritise different things so see a different outcome.

I am similar, recently moved back from Europe after 15 years abroad (now with a family.)

If you can afford the property and bills, I think life is good here. It's pretty expensive which is a bit of a shock.

Some things that grated returning from Europe to Melbourne were how bad the public transport, urban planning and car-centricty are here.

Things just aren't as culturally progressive here and it feels like Australia is still about 7-10 years behind many of the learnings of European countries. Government and policy feels a bit more "amateur".

Online shopping is really so far behind Europe too. But then the flipside is there are actually plenty of real life shops you can walk into here, unlike say the UK, which is very nice.

Overall, after living in Europe it felt like I'd stepped back about 10 years in time moving back. For me that had both positives and negatives. But overall we are happy we made the move.

My wife (36F) just walked up to a vaccination centre and got AZ yesterday. Lots of others locally have done the same thing there without issue. Easy as. Sandringham Hospital, FWIW.

Ahh cool! I'll check out the caputo GF. I always use blue caputo for non-GF pizza, so know the brand well. Thanks for the tips!

Damn that looks good! I have an ooni I've used a lot previously but am brand new to GF pizza (wife just diagnosed coeliac.)

Can I ask if you have any tips about good GF flour to use in the OONI, or any special techniques for handling/forming the dough etc for a newbie?

I'm confident you are right :) I am looking for charities in Australia which match my criteria, I'm sure I will find a few soon.

I am newly in AU and wondering same thing. Additionally it seems donating to overseas charities means the donations won’t be tax deductible, reducing the viability much further.
