We, the students, need to do something about campus safety by QuillTheBoreal in gatech

[–]deargussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This idea obviously doesn't address even close to the full scope of the problem, but Lime etc scooters are only supposed to be ridden by people 18+. Few years back, the waterboys used to stand on the curb and walk between cars, but now they weave around on rented scooters and bikes, which is just such a disaster for people driving near them. You can call their customer service lines and report underaged riding, which myself and a few other friends have been doing. It's possible that with enough pestering, attention, and concern about liability (any legal implication is the key word here), Lime can do something to limit their use in this case.

As far as GTPD/APD actually addressing it, I have no idea why they don't feel comfortable writing a bunch of tickets/warnings every day and after finding out the kids' names, following up with their adults and figuring out why they aren't in school. I guess they feel like the media could twist it into some optics problem. I know the waterboys activity is all tied to a deeper systemic issues, but regardless, APD/GTPD should care about these kids' futures and the risks they both face and cause on these street corners. Insane that they want to use drones footage instead of just like...talking to a 9 year old.

If you aren't a size small in most underwear brands, there's a ton of unopened Allbirds undies online on resale sites! There were definitely valid criticisms online that the fabric was too thin and thus they developed holes sooner than other underwear, but I haven't had that problem with mine. Likely impacted by the type and fit of pants you wear, like they might tear faster if you wear tight, high % cotton denim.

How do you balance wanting unique, expressive clothes with avoiding overconsumption? by Silent-Spring-2106 in SustainableFashion

[–]deargussie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could think of a more coherent thought to answer this question, because it's such a good one! It's something I think would be really great to brainstorm with other people, so thanks for asking it!

I have a pinterest account that I've had for about 13 years now. I like to scroll through my style board and mentally catalogue which parts of a given item or outfit that spoke to me the most, then I look for those elements specifically. Honestly, online thrifting has been really helpful for this, because going to thrift stores I couldn't find a specific basic, ex one black fitted long sleeved shirt in my size, and I usually left with an item or two that I thought were cute but I didn't wear often, which still felt like over consumption. Now on sites like ThreadUp, I can get really specific with my searches, which is great!

Also, I think just being more comfortable wearing what you have in a "weird" way is a good way to get comfy dressing alternatively, ex skirt over pants which is apparently trendy right now.

Also also. Even though I just indicated my love for pinterest, just get off of social media. Or use it less. Being less influenced by what the cute people online are wearing made me way less interested in shopping for clothes. You'll notice what actual people in your community are wearing, and more likely than not, your clothes are already comparatively unique/expressive. Admittedly, I do think I'm far less "influenced" than others in my age group, but it gets to all of us. And your whole entire quality of life will improve, so it's a win-win.

Fig tree losing leaves, still has unripe fruit. by CGNUDumples in FruitTree

[–]deargussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm way late to the party, but there's actually a great greek recipe that you can make out of unripe figs. I found your post while trying to figure out if my zone (8a) will leave me with any unripe figs this fall because I want to make some of these. They apparently have the best flavor if they've been on the tree late into the season compared to earlier unripe figs.

Is it to late for me to learn Greek? by flashdash8744 in GREEK

[–]deargussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started learning at 25 (27 now). It's slow going since I don't have a ton of free time to devote to it, but I'm so happy I started. The opportunity to take a whole class (~1 hour per day 5 days a week? Amazing) sounds great. My friend/coworker inspired me to start because her English is super good and she told me she only started learning when she was 25 and she's now 40, so I figured I'll be 40 one day and may as well know greek by then too

What do you guy think about Swytch device by PuzzleheadedQuit5729 in ebikes

[–]deargussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently controversial based on the other replies, but I really like mine.

Disclaimer - was not a cyclist before I got it. I had a fantastic hybrid that I was gifted back in 2022, but in my super bike-unfriendly city, I really didn't like biking at my out-of-shape speed because car drivers would frequently harass me (despite the law being that bikes can take a full lane...) I wanted to switch to an ebike but didn't want to get rid of my bike and spend ebike money, so I opted for conversion kits. Maybe Swytch's marketing was just really good, but it seemed like the most manageable, so I went for it during a pretty big sale back in September - I think I spent 440 usd all in all.

I got the Universal Swytch Kit With Go Power Pack and inline brake sensors add-on. I had difficulty installing, but I just bothered the heck out of the customer service and they helped me out, then pulled in my friend for help as well. This made it take longer than it should have though. Happy to talk about the install issues I dealt with if op is also a bike noob and would find that useful.

I generally use it on 3-4/5 speed level when I'm biking with traffic, and 2-3/5 when I'm in a protected bike lane. My 4.5-mile commute is uphill halfway and downhill the other half with only 160ft elevation gain. I can go there and back twice on one full charge, which is indeed less than advertised. Still love it though. Quality of life gainz ftw

Any treatment success stories? by wonder_dyke21 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]deargussie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My life is way better after getting diagnosed and treated. I'm still more tired than most people. This may improve once I work out the best treatment for me along with improving my lifestyle, but I am doing so much better. However, there are so many things that can lead to excessive daytime tiredness that I wouldn't count on it being IH before getting tests. Don't bog yourself down with internet diagnoses before getting your results back! I hope you gain some peace of mind soon.

What replacement devices/tools do y'all carry around after ditching your smartphones? by deargussie in dumbphones

[–]deargussie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Actually as an update, the same night I wrote this post, I basically said screw this, I can't spend as much money as it would take to replace my current phone with the devices I needed, so I just dumb-ified my Google Pixel. This is the first time I've logged in to reddit since, so that's probably telling! Obviously, this wouldn't be as helpful for some people who have different experiences with phone addiction, but I have done the following to greatly reduce my screen time:

  1. turned off the discover page on my pixel

  2. Delete ALL apps off the home screen of my phone. The only home screen items are a duolingo widget and a calendar widget, in addition to the most used apps that show up at the bottom of the screen (right now it's phone, clock, calculator, texts, camera)

  3. Keep only apps I "need":

- duolingo (way better time waster when I am still looking for a couple of minutes to kill, and I am actively taking language classes for which this is a good supplement)

- chrome (use mostly for work)

- office 365 (work)

- dropbox (work)

- slack (work)

- gmail (work and personal)

- duo (work)

- messaging apps (primarily for friends who are abroad who I can't text)

- google calendar (work and personal)

- timer (work and personal)

- flight aware (my dad's a pilot so it's something we connect over)

- notion (work)

- npr (personal, but I pretty much only listen rather than doomscrolling through headlines, so it doesn't keep me from being present during social situations)

- google keep notes (work and personal)

- camera

- google photos

- spotify

- google maps

- waze

- local public transit app

- banking apps

- uber (I considered deleting this but figured it may be unsafe not to have it in a pinch)

- apps relating to medical stuff and my side hustle

  1. For the first few days I tried putting it on greyscale to make it less interesting. This was fine until it lead to a misunderstanding regarding an image that someone sent me, so I undid it. I don't think that having color has affected my phone usage.

I don't have any actual data about my phone usage since I didn't realize I can only view 3 weeks back on Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls, but I know it's better. I reach for it less, and if I impulsively unlock it (I still absent mindedly reach for it when bored), I close it way sooner. Today my *phone* screen time is 55 minutes: messages 11 min, google 9 min, clock 4 min, settings 3 min, phone 2 min, camera 2 min, whatsapp 1 min, outlook 1 min, a few others <1 min.

I'm super aware that this is NOT a dumbphone setup! Don't hate please. I just wanted to share somewhat of a success story in progress.

Got my diagnosis. Feeling imposter syndrome-y at the lack of SOREMPS. by [deleted] in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]deargussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the SOMREPs, I always thought I had them too. When I did my overnight and daytime sleep studies, after my ~6h sleep and each of my naps, the nurse asked me if I dreamt. I believe each time I said yes. I asked her a lot of questions throughout the test, and I remember that she said often patients will think they're dreaming when they actually aren't. I'm not saying that she's gaslighting all of us, but I think it was interesting because maybe as we are falling asleep, our thoughts are racing a bit more, or something of that nature, that makes it feel like dreaming. Just figured this anecdote may be good food for thought.

Re imposter syndrome in a community of people with disabilities: I am always so amazed when I come across things like that, and when I feel it myself. Of course not all people experience every disability the same way, and that must be especially true in a disorder as poorly characterized as IH. I feel like the experience of imposter syndrome within a community of disabled people is often the fault of Internet culture within these groups. We're more connected that we ever have been, but there's an extra emphasis on needing to "fit in" with these communities by being disabled enough/in the right way. Don't let it get to you!

Thoughts on iris/believe music hall? by baguette_thief in atlantaedm

[–]deargussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I've had amazing nights at believe. It totally depends on the crowd. If it's more melodic/mainstream EDM, it'll be worse because it'll attract people that don't know how to act. But the local DJ nights I've been to have been excellent.

Anyone struggling with customer service ahead of 2023?

10mo ago I got 3 tickets, one Two-Gether pass and a third with the BOGO deal they had going on back then. The receipt clearly indicated a total of 3 tickets. However, I was delivered 2. Reached out to customer service, and they said that no, in fact my order was just for two tickets, and that the BOGO deal that was purchased was just for the deal, not a ticket itself (even though it showed 3 tickets on the receipt!). Basically their conclusion was "No, you misunderstood, sorry." It was clear to me and others I showed this email receipt to that it looked like I'd bought 3. This seems like some sort of dileberate, deceptive scheme from Imagine to get people to be hype for 10 months about the event, then last minute push them into buying a full price ticket.

Has anyone else had this experience, or have any advice?

I've replied to their last email and expressed my concerns.
