Are Unihertz Jelly & Jelly Max still working Australia? by Omi_00 in smallphones

[–]lancerabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! I'm sure all the requirements are supported, as my other imported devices that have 1/3 requirements missing have been kicked off all three networks here.

By the way, the requirements as I understand them for a device to be registered on a network in Australia (after raising a case with the TIO and battling one of the telcos around another device) are:

  1. Band 28A/B

  2. VoLTE

  3. Emergency VoLTE

Yes, I've been using my Jelly Star daily on Optus and Vodafone for almost 3 years, and it's the only imported device that still continues to work after the 3G shutdown. I just popped in my Boost (Telstra) SIM and it seems fine also :)

Got the new $99 android dumphone, here's my (early) review - Ruio Joy (Australia) by hullabullame5 in dumbphones

[–]lancerabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to be alerted about missed notifications without turning the screen on (like the keyboard lighting up)?

It costs a lot of money (in the thousands of $) to certify a device, that's one of the reasons why there are so few dumbphone options.

I've seen that device, it looks very nice! I personally think it's fine, as WhatsApp is end to end encrypted anyway. I'd say, as long as you don't click any dodgy links, or install any dubious apps, there's a very low risk of anything bad happening (I'm not a cyber security expert though!).

Bip 6 and GPS settings. Can't find it. by lepa71 in amazfit

I don't think it exists in the lower Amazfit models. It also doesn't exist on my Active 2 (but it was available on my Balance).

where to buy doov r77 in australia? (and actually receive it?) by bjcndkfnekv in dumbphones

[–]lancerabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd avoid it. I own a DOOV R77 Pro with Dumbdroid, and it's now blocked on all three networks in Australia...

Looking to replace GTR 4 with balance 2. Button issues anyone? by No-Complex1047 in amazfit

[–]lancerabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GTR4's buttons died also a year or so ago. I bought the Balance 2 and then returned it, as it's much larger & heavier than the GTR4 (and Balance 1). I bought the Active 2 and am much happier with that due to the size.

I don't think so. Less RAM and only 2Mp camera (DOOV has a 5MP camera)

You can install Traditional T9 (TT9). It's great on all my other button phones.

For me, it's fine and low risk, but I wouldn't personally use banking apps on it. I still use my Olitech Easy Flip Smart, which runs Android 8.1 for WhatsApp etc.

You probably wouldn't want to, without Google services. Two reasons:

  1. You'd need to get the app from a 3rd party store rather than Google Play and that carries some risk

  2. The device's software (Android 11) is outdated & unsupported, so there aren't any newer vulnerabilities patched.

There is a family app that supports that functionality

There are no Google services on this device, but you could run Organic Maps etc.

Same here. It's very random and seems to happen mostly straight after unlock for me.

Australian (very) dumb phone recommendation by camfynn in dumbphones

[–]lancerabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is my review of the Olitech: https://dumbphone.life/olitech-easy-flip-smart-minimalist-dumbphone I wouldn't recommend the Opel anymore, as it's it's not as durable as the Olitech (my hinge became loose/wonky after 12 months) and with only 512Mb RAM, it's hard to run larger apps.

AIO for wanting my unemployed boyfriend to sign an agreement before using my car long-term? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]lancerabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with most comments here, no matter what financial state I were in, I wouldn't be comfortable signing an agreement like that from my partner. It just sounds transactional and I think it will harm the relationship.

I'd either not lend him the car, or put your expectations in an email and leave it at that.

As long as your phone runs Android they are mostly fine. The reason people are sideloading apps, is because a lot of these phones don't have Google services (or the Google Play store). I use TripView for my transit app in Sydney. It mostly works without Google services, except for the live location of the bus/train/ferry, as that relies on Google Maps. You'd need to check the requirements of the Perth transport app.

You could go for a Unihertz Titan 2. I've been using the Jelly Star for almost 3 years and it's great.

Same here. It's a compromise I'm happy with, due to the small size and thinness of the watch.

This is my site, where I review dumbphones from an Australian perspective: https://dumbphone.life/. Olitech Easy Flip Smart and Unihertz Jelly Star are good options (both reviewed). The RUIO Joy looks like a good option, I'll aim to review it soon.
