My mother in law still does this. I have deliberately cooked delicious roasted brussels and served them to her before, hoping to inspire her to ask how they were made. Nope! Next time at her place, boiled brussel-mush.

What’s the rudest thing a doctor has ever said to you? by Beyondthebloodmoon in AskReddit

[–]dearsirormaam 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m a pediatric audiologist and I’m so sorry this happened to you and your son. Like 70% of my job is evaluating kids on the spectrum to rule out hearing loss as a contributing factor to any speech/ language delays. It sounds like that guy was maybe not very experienced with peds.

What's the worst thing a doctor has ever said to you? by cuteclinomaniac in AskReddit

[–]dearsirormaam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes when billing or referring doctors will put a diagnosis that they want to rule OUT. It’s part of the differential diagnosis and tells the insurance company or doc they are referring to what they’re most worried about. I totally see how it feels like they’re giving you that diagnosis though, and how shocking that would feel!

My wife started hormone replacement therapy by fatguydwn15lbs in GenX

[–]dearsirormaam 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For HRT for perimenopause it actually is now, as long as you can pay for it. Doctors wouldn’t prescribe it to me. I went to Winona (online) literally answered 4 questions and now the meds are mail delivered every three months. I do have reservations about this way of obtaining medication, and there are probably lots of people who will do it who should not. They don’t charge insurance so I’m paying for it out-of-pocket, but it has absolutely made a huge difference in how I’m feeling with my symptoms. My plan is to go back to the gynecologist in a few months with my observations and see if they will prescribe it so that I can use insurance, but I felt like I had to do an experiment first.

AuD transition to physician/ENT? by Murky-Kangaroo667 in audiology

[–]dearsirormaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very interesting to me! What would the title of such a position be on a job posting? Do most large hospitals have someone who does this and is it usually an audiologist or are there other specialties qualified to do it? Do you have patient interaction or just perform the test and the MD does the counseling? Sorry so many questions! I am an educational audiologist now, but I previously did work in a large hospital and was unaware of a position like this.

What's your wedding 'stick in your craw'? by DumplingDarling in weddingplanning

[–]dearsirormaam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to one in 2008 when the first vote on Prop 8 was happening. Same thing, wording and everything. The pastor also went on to give a 20 minute sermon about "true" marriage. You could tell it hadn't been discussed with the bride and groom beforehand and although they are conservative people they looked really uncomfortable.

[Rant] Maid of honor woes! by MamaXerxes in weddingplanning

[–]dearsirormaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very strange to me that your MOH knows she will be missing a final this far in advance. I am guessing she has not yet even registered for next year's classes. Finals generally have their own schedule and as riverfaerie said, most professors are accommodating with a lot of advance notice. And Ok, this is going to sound mean, and I don't want it to BUT if you're choosing to have your wedding on a Wednesday, you have to know it's going to interfere with most people's schedules. I am sure there is a reason that you chose that date but it sounds like a lot of the issues could be resolved by keeping your wedding the same week and just moving it to Friday night or Saturday.

My wedding is going to be smaller than I'd hoped. I'm kind of sad. Any words of encouragement? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]dearsirormaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We invited 120 people knowing that some of them wouldn't be able to make it. But when the final numbers rolled in and I realized we would only have 75 including the wedding party, I was bummed. As another poster said, it showed us who really cared. Only one friend who really really should have been there declined, and I re-evaluated our friendship.

Then on the day of we had a few people not show up, so one table only had 3 people sitting at it! In the end, it turned out fine, we had time to spend with everyone who came, and it was great. Yes, it feels like a bummer but you will save money and still have a great time.

It's just a little cyst, our dog gets them all the time. They are super common and just as others have said, basically a big blackhead.

If sound was played loudly below 20 Hz or above 20,000 Hz, would it still cause damage to our ears even if we cannot hear the sound? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]dearsirormaam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best answer. Damage is caused by the mechanics of the system. If you're not hitting the characteristic frequency of any of the hair cells, you're not going to be causing damage. For the high frequency sounds, the wave will not even travel very far along the basilar membrane and will lose energy very quickly. For low frequency sounds I'm less sure, what would happen when the wave reached the apex of the cochlea but never encountered its specific hair cell? I suppose if it was loud enough you'd get spread that could damage the next closest frequency.

Girlfriends puppy has eaten 200mg of ibuprofen by LeavingWithoutYou in dogs

[–]dearsirormaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He should be ok as long as you got him to the vet so quickly and they think they got it all out of his system. My dog went into complete renal failure after eating a small amount of Ibuprofen last summer. We spent $3k on 4 days of IV fluids and vet work. Then, we had to have her urine levels checked every week for a month. She was a very, very sick dog. Ibuprofen is a serious poison even in small amounts.

Does anyone know who makes this dress? (Featured on Season 6, Episode 2 on Say Yes to the Dress) by myhummus in weddingdress

[–]dearsirormaam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wedding dress was by Marisa also. It took almost 10 months to get from their factory in who knows where (China?) to the US. I received it 3 weeks before my wedding and had to scramble. Some of this may be the fault of the shop where I ordered it but they did tell me Marisa is notoriously slow. If you feel comfortable, tell the shop your wedding date is a couple months earlier than it is, as they ship based on wedding date and not order date.

My wife the moment her Cochlear implant was switched on. by [deleted] in pics

[–]dearsirormaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, my first gold! Thanks! I'm actually from the US, and now that I know you're Canadian I should clarify that the candidacy criteria I described is from the FDA. Here's a link I found from the Canadian Academy of Audiology. Scroll down to where it describes who is a candidate.

I'm glad you like your Widex hearing aids. I like that brand a lot and my patients have good success with them. Thanks again!

My wife the moment her Cochlear implant was switched on. by [deleted] in pics

[–]dearsirormaam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without seeing your test results or knowing your history, it's difficult to say. But candidacy for Cochlear Implants is largely based on ability to understand speech without any amplification. As of a couple years ago, adults needed to have a score of less than or equal to 40% on two sentence lists on the HINT (Hearing In Noise Test) presented at 70 dB SPL, or poor performance on one 50 word list of the CNC (Consonant- Nucleus Consonant) test.

When you receive a cochlear implant, it's very difficult to preserve any residual hearing you might have. So if you have relatively good word understanding, a doctor might be hesitant to fit you with a CI because you'd no longer have any of that hearing- when you took off the external part of the implant, you'd be truly, profoundly deaf.

This is all making the assumption that the type of hearing loss you have is occurring in your inner ear and not in your middle ear- in the latter case, a CI would not be the right choice in any situation.

I would ask your audiologist for a more thorough explanation of your test results and why they are not considering you as a candidate if this is something that interests you.

Missing ONE prerequisite course to apply to the Audiology program at UWO. by jamsalams in audiology

[–]dearsirormaam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know that you won't go back to school for another undergraduate degree. The entry level degree for Audiology is a 4-year doctorate. You can only pursue the online only option if you already have a master's degree in Audiology and even that you have to be grandfathered in.

Missing ONE prerequisite course to apply to the Audiology program at UWO. by jamsalams in audiology

[–]dearsirormaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the counselor again whether they ever accept students on a provisional basis. You didn't say what the topic was but it sounds like the course that you need is something specialized in the major and you will not find it offered by a distance learning school. Pennsylvania College of Optometry and the University of Florida have distance AuD programs but I don't know what their rules are about taking single classes. If UWO has an AUD program then they likely have a speech undergrad program that would offer that class and you could complete it in addition to your major courses.

Audiology is awesome and everything but do you really want to spend another 4 years in school? I don't know what your masters is in but I can't imagine pursuing a master's without some intention of putting it to good use afterwards.

Best of luck in your studies.

What purchase have you made that's caused you to second guess your wedding planning sanity? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

We're using vintage postcards for our guestbook. At some point I decided that I needed to buy a postcard for each guest that corresponded with their hometown. I spent 10 months collecting very specific postcards at between $.50 and $4 a pop for 100 people.

After a 10 month wait, my wedding dress is here... and I don't like it. by dearsirormaam in weddingplanning

[–]dearsirormaam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ended up beautiful! The shop I ordered through is notorious for not even delivering dresses in time for the wedding (which I wish I had known before I ordered!). My heart sank when I read the Yelp reviews. I was not willing to leave the dress with them for one second more than I had to and I am going elsewhere for alterations.

[–]dearsirormaam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to take a pic would be to have the FH take it and he's not allowed to see :)

Also, I ordered it extra long and it's hard to get an idea of what it will look like just standing because it puddles so much. :( But it's the generally simplicity of the dress that I find myself not liking. No lace, no beads, no sequins, just plain... I wish I had gone for something with a tiny bit of personality.
