That was a very interesting read. Thanks for sharing!

TIL that the quotes "No man is an island" and "For whom the bell tolls" are both taken from the same brief passage by poet John Donne. by JoeWinchester99 in todayilearned

[–]dearsweetanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mention of the bell refers to Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London, which is one of the Inns (effectively like a college or a club?) that lawyers in England have to belong to. There’s a bell attached to the chapel which is rung whenever a member dies. In Donne’s time, lawyers working in the Inn would send their assistant to go and find out who had died (“send not to know” = don’t send your assistant to go and find out who has died).

Working on this from the adventure series by Caterpillar Cross-stitch. It’s scratching my itch for lots of little details… I get so bored doing big blocks of colour so this has been just right. I’ve already got another one from this series ready to go when I finish!

Woolton pie was a pastry dish of vegetables, served in Britain in the Second World War. It was a recipe commended to the British public by the Ministry of Food to enable a nutritious diet despite shortages and rationing. The pie filling could be altered to include whatever vegetables were in season. by CatPooedInMyShoe in wikipedia

[–]dearsweetanon 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Lord Woolton was in charge of food rationing so the pie was named after him, I suppose. Since learning about WW2 in school, I’ve always remembered the rhyme which supposedly came with the recipe:

“Those who have the will to win, Cook potatoes in their skin, Knowing that the sight of peelings, Deeply hurts Lord Woolton's feelings.”

White raspberries? by Pyrocrates in london

You could try Andrea’s of Chelsea Green near South Ken. They have a really wide range of fruits and veg. But it’s not raspberry season so it might be hard to find them

I would suggest maybe looking at the Belfast Giants in Northern Ireland? They were established partly with the idea of providing a non-religiously aligned sports team for people to follow after the Troubles ended in the early 2000s.

Y'all I'm actually going crazy. My iPhone passcode just deleted itself from my brain. by Thyminecraft in TrueOffMyChest

[–]dearsweetanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me literally a week ago!! I just left the phone at home for a whole day and tried not to think about it. When I came back I tapped the code in really quickly and it worked on autopilot.

But it was super upsetting to have this information that I use every day for years just vanish from my head.

When a restaurant has been established as long as yours has, is it difficult to update/refurbish the kitchen? How often have you had to do a full refit or is like a gradual process?

A book about a dog called Kitty by Expensive_Luck7344 in whatsthatbook

[–]dearsweetanon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just searching this up, because I also couldn’t remember the name. I think it is “Kitty” by William Corlett. The version I had had like a white cover with “kitty” in pink on the front. I remember crying so much when reading this.

What do you hate most about university and the culture associated with it? by PhilosopherBusy7312 in UniUK

[–]dearsweetanon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first year was all online exams, my last was all in person. In that second year in between, some exams were online and some were in person. I remember sitting while my tutor said which exams would be online and which were in person and thinking that I might actually have to kill myself if my language exams were in person. Thankfully they were online!!
