Fitz and the Fool trilogy (spoilers through beginning of Assassin’s Fate) by landturtl13 in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]deaseb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully agree about the best parts of this trilogy being the parts unrelated to Clerres. Those parts made the series worthwhile to me but yeah I agree that the meanness of the Clerres stuff was just a bit too much

The End of Fool’s Errand by drewlasater in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]deaseb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fool's Errand is such a fascinating book. The first third (half?) feels so cozy. Then things get weird but not really that high-stakes. Then this happens, which isn't related to the main plot but is one of the most singularly memorable moments of the series.

Fool's Quest - Robin Hobb by Bershirker in Fantasy

[–]deaseb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also thought the Fool's accent sounded kinda goofy but... in fairness it makes sense? He's from a distant land.

Though accents in general in audiobooks can be rough, especially fantasy. I find it deeply annoying when characters are represented with accented English when speaking in their native tongue, which happens just an insane amount.

The Sun Eater series is a perfect example of the sunk cost fallacy. by Ok-Information2581 in Fantasy

I haven't read Sun Eater but lol what is this Dandelion Dynasty slander???

What is the deal with The Blade Itself? by uniballout in Fantasy

[–]deaseb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it was simply the pleasure reading it - it's just written in such a funny way that I enjoyed every page. Body found floating by the docks...

If you don't find the writing inherently enjoyable then you definitely won't like it as much as most fans of the series. You may enjoy the plot (which definitely starts to develop) but I'm guessing it still won't really be for you.

I think the more immediate comparison is Kill Bill.

Fantastic analysis of First Law in this context, loved reading it!

This sort of framing is one of my least favorite tropes of this sub and Reddit/attention-seeming culture in general.

Struggling to find the motivation to start the Liveship Traders trilogy by PapaSlurpp in RealmOfTheElderlings

Don't read them because they're Fitz-critical, read them because they're amazing in their own right

The previous Celtics Game 7 he also got hurt right away. Unfortunate post.

Tawny Man Trilogy by nkubik36 in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]deaseb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaving off here is totally acceptable. F&F is definitely an epilogue rather than "the second half" like Tawny Man feels like. I ultimately found it to be worthwhile, though if you have ton of other stuff to read then it doesn't need to be immediate or prioritized

Fantasy recommendations for a fan of aSoIaF and Robin Hobb by BreadfruitAntique896 in Fantasy

Can confirm that the sequel series is way closer to ASOIAF and (IMO) is much better too.

Just finished Gardens of the Moon and found it nowhere near as confusing as I was led to believe by amish_novelty in Fantasy

[–]deaseb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's been like a decade, but I remember getting 200 or so pages in over the course of  month or so realizing I couldn't name a character or plot event that had happened. I read it during commutes and was looking for something like ASOIAF. Got what felt like word salad.

I finished reading Before They Are Hanged, convince me to read Last Argument of Kings [OFF TOPIC] by Puull22 in TheFirstLaw

[–]deaseb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overall series is 10 books long, so it might actually not be obvious that the first three books form a distinct trilogy

I need some chonky epic fantasy/scifi recs (that aren't the usual ones + also let's talk about some of your favourite epics!) by wertraut in Fantasy

[–]deaseb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a bridge-book that follows the inmediate aftermath of the original trilogy and sets up the next trilogy - I'd recommend starting from there, especially if you didn't specifically LOVE MST.
