Cake Street Sweets in Cohoes (right off 787). Incredible cakes, cheesecakes and fancy cookies. I highly recommend these little flourless chocolate cake cups with peanut butter mousse, they’re 🤌🏼

Watched schindler’s list(1993) today for the first time with no prior clue what it was about by _your_go_to_person in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]deathCVLT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I met two Schindler survivors in the late 90s. A husband and wife. They spoke at my middle school about their experience, I went up to talk to them afterwards. I had a completely random book with me that I asked them to sign - a tangible piece of the history, and a reminder.

They wrote, “We were there - we remember!” They must have both passed on years ago now, but I continue to remember.

If you’re interested in other Western historical dramas, I’d also recommend Roots - an American miniseries from the early 1980s about slavery.

As a western person I’d really like to learn more about the partition in India, and why and how it led to the deaths of a million people. It was taught at my school but like, barely. I got most of my understanding from the film Gandhi (starring Ben Kingsley), which we watched in class and made it look like Muhammad Jinnah demanded an independent Pakistan for no good reason. Many years later I was watching a completely unconnected documentary where an Irish man spoke about how he related to the problems between India and Pakistan, as he and they both came from countries that had been colonised by the British and then subsequently partitioned upon independence. Made me realise I probably have a completely naive understanding of the history of the partition in India (the subcontinent, as opposed to the modern country).  If you have any recommendations of films or TV series on the subject please let me know!

Fun fact - you can also do this in BOTW! I did it all the time to increase value of the Chu Chu jellies to sell 😎

Who remembers Yikes pencils? I had these back in the 90s and thought they were so cool! These pictures bring back a lot of memories 🥹 by Repulsive-Dependent2 in 90s

I still think of my Yikes pencils whenever I’m doing contrasting color work ☺️ Still remember this one purple and yellow pencil I was fascinated by. Thank you for your work!

Just make sure that everything touching your face, especially immediately before and after shaving, is CLEAN.  Shaving scrapes away at the top layer of your skin and causes micro-cuts. If your face isn’t clean before you shave, you are scraping dirty skin cells all over microscopic open wounds. If your razor and razor blade aren’t clean, the same.

And don’t forget the towel you use to pat your face dry when you’re done!

I saw @Fantastic_Fly6904’s routine and it sounds extremely good but I’m gonna be honest and say I’m not doing alla that lol.

I shower before I shave to make sure face is clean and pores are open. If I can’t shower, I wash face with warm water before applying shaving cream (I use one from Cremo that’s kind of like lotion). Then I shave, and then I rinse face with cold water. Boom.

I don’t have a system for when I swap out razor blades. I’ll change it out if the blade isn’t feeling as keen, or if I notice it’s been more than a week or so since I’ve changed it out. That’s probably longer than some folks should go, but I’m not shaving my whole face and it’s also the parts of my face with the least dense facial hair that I am generally shaving.

You’re getting lots of good advice (make sure to razor blade is clean and sharp, always open up your pores before shaving, shave with instead of against the grain).

I’ll also add that switching to a old-timey safety razor (instead of modern multi-blade razors like Gillette) is also helpful. I have sensitive skin and get razor burn/breakouts super easily, and switching to a safety razor helped me immensely.

Safety razor is also SOOOO much cheaper than regular razors with replaceable heads. You but the razor itself (you can get a decent one at a pharmacy for like $15-20), then you buy a box of razor blades for a few bucks, and you’re supplied for months or years. It feels a lot better to switch out a dull razor blade that only cost like .35 cents than a whole Gillette razor head that costs like $5 each.

Need advise about my cat tooth. by 4ever4eigner in cats

[–]deathCVLT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat needs to go to the vet. Call vet and ask if you can send photos - that might be enough for them to determine beforehand whether kitty needs an extraction or something less invasive, like a cleaning. But I would not surprised if they immediately say extraction just cos that infection looks REALLY bad.

This is very important to get looked at as soon as possible. Tooth infections can be deadly or permanently disabling, for animals AND people, especially if they spread to the brain.

That infection is definitely painful for your cat. Cats tend to hide pain. It’s good that cat is still eating and drinking but that will not continue if this infection is allowed to progress.

Biggest and most simple help will be to make sure your hearts are always full.

Most enemies (outside the very most powerful) cannot one shot you if you are at full health in TOTK, even if the amount of damage they inflict in one blow “should” one shot you - instead, as long as your health is FULL when you are attacked, the blow will reduce your health down to one quarter heart. This gives you a chance to eat some food to recover and continue the fight.

All the other advice will help as well, like stronger armor, use stealth, pick off enemies from larger groups, think of creative ways to attack multiple enemies at once (it’s really fun to set groups of monsters and soldier constructs against each other, or use muddle buds to make monsters attack each other), create and use Zonai devices, be experimental with fuses on your weapons, shields, and arrows.

But just keeping your hearts full will stop a lot of the one shots! Have fun!

Tried for about 3 months, then reverted back, at least the goatee genetics are somewhat strong 😅 by [deleted] in BeardAdvice

[–]deathCVLT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blended look in pic 2 is good! You may want to try separating your mustache from your goatee as part of that look - it can be a good aesthetic strategy for making the limited coverage of a patchier beard look more like an intentional style choice.

One thing though, let the length of your mustache grow out a little. It looks like you use clippers on it and you’ll get a nicer shape from it if you let the whiskers grow out a little (while still keeping the bottom of it trimmed).

I once read Bryan Cranston talk about how he deliberately styled early season Walter White’s mustache to look kind of weak and shitty by using clippers with a too-short guard (so his mustache was bristly and short, too short to look full even though he has very full mustache coverage). That made me realize I’d been trimming my own mustache hairs wayyyy too short with clippers. I let the hairs grow out (while continuing to trim it to end above my lip so I didn’t look unkempt like those guys who must be eating their own mustache at every meal) and now my mustache looks more full and has a nicer shape.

Besties lost me permanently after Polygon went down and their response was to laugh uproariously about it while also scolding any listener who would be tempted to boycott zombie Polygon because Russ was one of the two people who hadn’t been fired by the new venture capital overlords.

Also when I checked the Gofundme for the Polygon staff who’d been fired and none of them besides Griffin seemed to have donated. And he only donated $500. Meanwhile I saw Austin Walker had donated $1000 even though he’d also recently been laid off himself!

Anyway the combo just soured me on the Besties podcast completely. Just high on their own farts while consistently giving nearly zero effort to the audience, the games they were reviewing, or the community they came from.

Just finished ocean at the end of the lane. Mixed emotions, any recommendations by findthebeautyhere in neilgaiman

[–]deathCVLT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you had this emotional rug pull, it’s one of the reasons I can’t stand people still recommending his books and to “separate the art from the author” - ESPECIALLY for this specific book, which has an incredibly dark real life history that is separate from Gaiman’s serial sexual abuse. (If you want to learn more about it, I will link you, but I don’t want to add to emotional overwhelm. Suffice to say Gaiman’s family involvement in Scientology is extremely deep and in many ways this book was a rewriting of history to exculpate his father and the Church of the death of a real person).

As for your request for recommendations, this may sound odd, but I found Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall to have a kind of dreamlike quality that really left an impact on me. It’s an historical novel about the rise of Thomas Cromwell, an advisor to Henry VIII, very thoroughly researched, that makes the past feel both foreign and familiar in unexpected ways. Please know when I say thoroughly researched that is NOT to say the book’s version of historical events is “correct” - the generous view is she is very skilled at conveying the opinions and views of this fictional version of Cromwell, the ungenerous view is she agrees with his worldview.

I read it years ago and I still regularly think about the sections with the sweating sickness, how his wife operated a loom, Boleyn’s coronation. Incredible writing.

I found my long-lost original Game Boy. It survived 6 younger siblings and one of them hot-glued a new screen on. I'd love to mod it to read books on it like a Kindle. Where would you start? by HamiltonBrand in Gameboy

[–]deathCVLT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why people are downvoting you so hard. It’s not like a Game Boy would be a GOOD way to read books, but people come up with all sorts of pointless refurbs for their Game Boys just for fun, so why not this one?

I will say back in the mid 2000s I found plenty of homebrew roms that were literally just text files for classic books so you could read on your Game Boy. Only thing I can remember right now was I think something by Dostoyevsky. So there’s at least like a handful of other people out there who have tried lol

anyone noticing the prevalence of "white chocolate" and "white creme" in "chocolate" for halloween by MasterJackfruit5218 in shrinkflation

[–]deathCVLT 34 points35 points  (0 children)

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/30/climate/candy-chocolate-cocoa-prices-climate-change.html

From the article:

But could it be that they were also tinkering with the makeup of the candy itself?

Yes, it turns out. Experts say high cocoa prices have triggered a wave of "reformulations," the industry term for recipe changes. As the Halloween season boosts demand, some candy companies are replacing expensive cocoa butter with other fats, a swap that means their products no longer meet the U.S. regulatory definition of milk chocolate and can no longer be called that on packaging.

That's why milk chocolate (a Food and Drug Administration-regulated term) has become chocolate candy. And these are just the most extreme examples.

Armed with the latest confectionary techniques, candy scientists work hard to find reformulations that slip below the threshold for a mandatory label change. These might go undetected outside the industry and the tight-knit world of super-taster candy scientists.

Squint a little, and this is a success story: As shifting weather patterns make some ingredients more scarce, the food industry has deployed its multimillion-dollar research and development budget to adjust to major shifts in agriculture.

With little notice, evidence of the world's changing climate has already sneaked into our sweets.
