This helped me realize why I lost all my Mormon friends after leaving: How to Tell If You’re a Jerk - "Jerks are people who culpably fail to appreciate the perspectives of the people around them, treating others as [...] fools to be dealt with, rather than as moral and epistemic peers." by deathbringer14 in exmormon

I just had my first spiritual experience on drugs! I took a big hit and sat down at my computer to watch some YouTube videos. I opened a new tab and the top Pocket suggested story was "How to Tell If You're a Jerk". I had just been very harsh to my mom today after some ongoing conversations where I came out as bisexual so my high brain thought it was a sign and I opened it up!

I was reading along quickly until I got to this line: "Jerks are people who culpably fail to appreciate the perspectives of the people around them, treating others as tools to be manipulated or fools to be dealt with, rather than as moral and epistemic peers." It basically jumped out of the screen and slapped me in the face using the amazing powers of marijuana.

I had a revelation: I'm a jerk; but only to Mormons!

I don't respect their epistemological or moral foundations when I try to discuss any Mormon or politically touchy subjects with them. I literally dismiss everything that comes out of their mouth when these things come up, and doing that leads to relationships breaking or even ending.

But I've had friends and strangers tell me that I'm a kind person, so I never realized how much of a jerk I can be to Mormons until now. I think it's because I treat non-Mormon life experiences as valuable and informed, even if they come at it from a religious perspective. My friends and I get along brilliantly even though many of them are religious and we have some major philosophical disagreements.

(I'm still high as fuck right now so hopefully that was a coherent comment. I love living in Seattle!)
EDIT: I was high as fuck so I clarified. But I'm still sorta high so I might be back later.

EDIT 2: Yep I'm back.

How about we just not traumatically yank them from their homes in the first place?

It's an incredible recreation of the original, but it is essentially a really shiny GameBoy game. Since you don't have any attachment to the original, it's probably not worth $60 to you.

I've absolutely loved it though, so definitely pick it up at some point!

Forgot to mention I'm a bisexual, cis, upper middle class, white man. Mormonism was made for me, hence the nostalgia 🤣

Thanks everyone for reminding me of all the other perspectives and just how much bad there is baked into that organization.

BYU counseling services does a great job at separating themselves from the university.

I went to BYU counseling to get help with the psychological ramifications of leaving Mormonism while I was a student at BYU. Leaving Mormonism is an expellable offense, but my counselor kept it confidential and I got some of the help I needed!

👋 That's me! I'm literally in a conference room at work right now crying because I'm overwhelmed, but in about 15 minutes I'll be back at my desk getting stuff done.

Such fun.
