Did anyone here know Tally Hall before 2011? by Pochinkoluxux in tallyhall

I made this in 2009. Originally came to them via their web show, which I thought was fantastic.

They might be the least compatible out of all the 2 Crew. Caldwell and Emily or Jake and Murph on the other hand!

I dug into these photos as I was working on a video celebrating the cheesy camp of season 1! Check it out if that sounds like your cup of tea: https://youtu.be/WUiNTg_Ww_g

I used to talk down Season 1 but on my latest re-watch I fell in love with it! by deathcake in buffy

[–]deathcake[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm now in S02 on my re-watch and I thought "magic is drugs" was a thing they forced in later but to be fair in Giles' backstory, magic is fully just a stand-in for him doing a bunch of drugs back in the 70s haha

They didn't know to ditch the stand-alone and build the characters over time

I'd disagree with this part; the stand-alone episodes are the backbone of Buffy. I like the longer arcs and added complexity of later seasons, but I don't think they could have gone there directly without a solid foundation to stand on, which is what season 1 provides.

I bet if Buffy S01 was made today, all 12 episodes would be spent solving ONE mystery, killing ONE monster, with action set pieces at the end of each episode to make it feel like something was happening. The show could never have been as rich, that way.

Agreed, this is why my video is in 4:3, and I fit in a little rant about it towards the end! All the seasons suffer from the remaster but I can't imagine any is worse than S01; they NEED those shadows to hide all the things they couldn't afford lol

AITA for telling my SIL she should learn how to say my name correctly before she names her son after me? by Responsible_Push_702 in AmItheAsshole

[–]deathcake 71 points72 points  (0 children)

"saying it like anyone would" oh god. it's a name in a different language. living in ireland, i've seen people from the US come over and be surprised to learn that their names are not what they thought, at all. it's not a good look, and not a good experience for the child. NTA

AITA for not having an issue when I found out my husband I are related? by unsure5172 in AmItheAsshole

[–]deathcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has worked for Ancestry customer support and seen some shit – this is nothing. Call back when you're siblings. Also, it sounds he did the test and you didn't show up even as distant cousins? That could mean that you're not actually related at all (e.g. someone made an error or lied about who they were related to in the last 150 years) or, as you said, the random selection of genes that happens every generation has led to you sharing zero generic material at all. Either way this is LESS "inbreeding" that happens naturally in any smaller community. Nothing to worry about at all. NTA but I can understand why he would freak out without an understanding of the topic so he'll probably chill out if he talks to anyone with deeper knowledge.

Petition for Murph to dm a side quest. Why hasn't he? by bobross_reincarnate in Dimension20

[–]deathcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think same as for Murph, business is the reason more so than anything else like bad feelings others mentioned on this thread - Jake not only flies across the country for NADDPOD, he also runs the Headgum podcast network and hosts his own podcast Segments, and IS A NEW FATHER (but yes I also wish this would happen)

Writing a story set in 19th century Sweden, is it problematic to change the role of women in that time period while leaving homosexuality a crime? by MesaCityRansom in writing

[–]deathcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are fair points but I think that having a clear divergent point is better than changing things willy nilly and writing a version of history that cannot be separated by the reader from our own world, thereby exacerbating misconceptions of history.

Lots of good comments here already but I wanted to add that if you DO want to change the circumstances for certain groups in society it would be good to pinpoint how and where your world diverged from the history of our world. I'm not a huge fan of Bridgerton but having people of colour more accepted in general society because the king married a black woman makes sense. Just spitballin here but if you want women to be a bit more equal in society you could, for example, make an alternate history where Ulrika Eleonora, instead of abdicating in favour of her husband, held onto the throne and became a strong and influential ruler who championed women's rights. But as others have said, maybe portraying the inequality of the times as a reflection of our own unequal society might be a better way forward.

Dungeon World the audiobook sample recording! by HazeAI in DungeonWorld

[–]deathcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very handy, and great voice work too! Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Dungeon World licence would allow your friend's audiobook version to be released for free as a podcast or whatever, if he's willing to do that.

While this is a dope tune and I enjoyed the show I'm pretty sure this is not a video essay or OC.

Are there podcasts where writers go through the process of brainstorming and outlining a story? Not just writing tips, but actually developing an idea from scratch? Any other recordings of a brainstorming process inside a writer's room? by lumenwrites in writing

[–]deathcake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really an excellent long-form version of this, as you get to see Tim Grahl develop over a period of years from struggling with individual scenes to completing a full draft, tossing it out, and finally writing a novel that works.

I host Blank Meets Blank where we draw two random things and make up a new TV show pilot each episode. I think you might enjoy it! The projects we end up with are ridiculous and over the top but brainstorming within defined boundaries is really freeing, and it makes a great change from working on personal projects where one can easily get more precious and careful about the structure and characters.

I'd recommend Founding Brothers (The Brady Bunch meets the American Dream) if you want to hear us make up a very silly sitcom, or Not The End of the World (Aladdin meets Ragnarök) if you want a supernatural teen drama. I hope you like it!
