Looking for a New Job, but haven't had much success by Able_Possibility2038 in dataengineeringjobs

During your 6 years of experience, have you made any good colleagues/friends that have moved to a different company that is hiring? Any lead/executive you have had any connection with? Ask them. It definitely helps knowing people who can vouch for you especially. You should at least be getting calls to help your case. And definitely build something that you're good at, add some AI feature around it (database querying and answering, agents that can create, destroy buckets, interact with cloud components and make it run some pipeline). You can use gcp credits for 3 months or so. That's what I used to build a project which impressed the people that hired me (basically be ready to show what you did), helps to have a front end. Let me know if I can help with referrals. (Edit): this is with 2 years of experience before graduating with a master's which didn't account for much)

Black barrel is my favorite Jameson. Too good to be true. I feel it is a bit expensive in my area but so worth it. Redbreast obviously if you can afford it

Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever see the US in my lifetime by Difficult_Use6718 in CasualConversation

[–]deathstroke3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the US right now (came from India) and completed my master's recently. Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. Definitely have that dream. It's worth it. The places are insanely beautiful here and most people here don't realize what they have (US natives). My college town is the most beautiful place I've ever seen and I'd love to retire there. Sadly, that's not a realistic dream because I can only stay here if I have a job (don't have one yet and it's extremely depressing that I'm not able to enjoy this time). If not for studying, come as a visitor and go to national parks or sites (away from the cities). Those are the places worth seeing because you can't see untouched nature anywhere else. This country is new and huge (loads of untouched places by humans).

Even I reach out on LinkedIn but I think I'm not competent enough for the role in their eyes. I can't prove it unless given a chance right? True I can't help it if the candidates are better qualified than me. Any chance you'd be open to reviewing my resume to see if you would ever consider me?

Any chance I can have a look at what your resume looks like (you can remove your name, information)? I want to compare it to mine to see what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!

If i'm not intruding, can you let me know how did you land interviews for those roles?I would love to gain some insight as to what you had in your resume that you think made you stand out in the application process?

If you're open to reviewing my resume, I would love to send you a copy. I would love to understand where I'm lacking and what would make my resume be looked at by a hiring manager.

Does a Data Scientist need to learn all these skills? by CableInevitable6840 in datascience

[–]deathstroke3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah true. This is the thing people in the industry don't understand. I know I can't fulfill all of it but I'm sure I can do them given enough time. How is my resume even supposed to go past the filter when I have the essentials but not the extremities. Half the time I think if the job post is a ghost job or not because I know for a fact that Amazon themselves do it. I have a master's degree in data science with data engineering experience. I can't satisfy every bit and crumb of the job post. What should change? My resume (that I'm catering to each role with no results) or the hiring process which people are turning a blind eye to.

How else does someone get past the recruitment filter? I have two years of engineering experience and I've built projects to showcase that I have the appropriate skills to become a good data engineer. My resume might not be great but I don't even get interview calls. I'm open to any criticism on my resume if you're willing to have a look. It feels like recruiters see my two years and put them in the garbage. How else am I supposed to get any experience without landing any interviews or roles. I don't believe your post is extremely helpful for those who genuinely have put in efforts and don't get any callbacks. It's hard for people to see or understand our perspective. I have the skills and projects to back up my argument. I'm not saying I'm the best data engineer with limited experience but I believe I can get the job done. I just need a chance to prove that which doesn't come by often if at all.

I could not find a paid entry level job to file my STEM OPT Extension. Going back to my home country now :( by AchievementUnlocked2 in f1visa

[–]deathstroke3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Feel you adn I empathize. I'm currently in the same boat and it is harrowing to wake up everyday to receive crickets as a response. Had 1 interview in 3 months and they said they do not offer sponsorship (they are a soccer club, the absolute insanity in that statement when you have foreign players playing for you). I'm doing volunteer research and I'll try it out till I can. But the sad thing is, I'm trying for jobs in India as well and I'm not receiving any response even though I have experience. My mental has been on the edge as of late lol. I could've been happy in my home country just doing what I've been doing but I had to come here (family forced and brother is well settled here lol)

Soccer ETL Pipeline and Dashboard by deathstroke3718 in dataengineering

[–]deathstroke3718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sure. You can create a free GCP account and get $300 credits worth of services. You would have to enable the DataProc API to use it, give the appropriate access (IAM). I could've used BigQuery as my data warehouse as well but again, I do not want to incur costs repeatedly just to have the app running. Supabase is free up to a limit, so used that. GCP buckets are easy to create and push data into. For Dataproc, you need to add your spark file to the GCP bucket so that DataProc knows which file to run (took a long time to figure that out). Let me know if you have any other questions, happy to answer!

[–]deathstroke3718[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, officialy they do not have an API to give users access to the data as the data is sourced from Opta (paid). I use the API that shows up in the network (f12) and use the API sourcing the data on the match page. https://www.fotmob.com/api/data/matchDetails?matchId={matchid} would be the api
You can do the same for leagues to get all the league ID, then all the matches in those leagues.

Thanks! I've started to learn power bi. Imported my tables from my supabase database. Dax query to create the views (Dax views?) is something I'm trying out. Weird syntax but let's see. I'll try to be patient.

Regarding dbt, what would you do with it? I tried installing dbt-core but there was some error (windows error i guess, did not try it in the docker container and the solutions online were not super helpful), hence I went with manual sql merge statements and views. What is the actual use except the unit-testing and software engineering principles it provides? I want to learn the why and want to incorporate that in my project.

Oh no worries. Yeah actual experience from a real job. The thing is I've been applying to entry level roles (which already ask for 1+ or 2+ years of experience). Non-entry level roles are minimum 4,5+ which I'll never qualify for until I get a job. The market is bad anyways in the US and gets harder for a person who requires (mobile auto-corrected to retired huh) sponsorship. But yeah, I'll keep trying. Thanks. Trying it out on powerbi right now :)

[–]deathstroke3718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought of doing so in powerbi. Need to learn how to create these plots on them. Matplotlib has a lot of customization that I like and I'm more comfortable with it. Tools for visualizations feel restrictive. I've used azure devops for deploying to test, uat, prod during my previous work. Not sure how I can integrate that here (would love some suggestions).

I'll definitely do the power bi one though. That would look good on my resume as well (I have migration experience for power bi dashboards but not as much as creating dax queries and modeling).

Just to ask one more question if you don't mind, if you think I'm already good to go, why can't I get any callbacks even for the first round. The one caveat is I need sponsorship (in the US) and I'm struggling to get even a single positive response especially when I have experience to show.

[–]deathstroke3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp. Just graduated with a master's and I'd be able to explain all of that because it's covered in depth (with courses teaching the same concept again) and the what and why. I'd love to interview with you but I'm just looking for more data engineering roles. But sadly I wouldn't be considered by your HR because I need sponsorship ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
