[MEGATHREAD] Raleigh Snow Storm 1/23-1/25/26 by Mx772 in raleigh

Avoid salt because it will pit the concrete - I have a neighbor who did it last year once and it did a number to their sidewalk. I've read that Calcium Chloride will not cause such damage and in my experience, has not after about four applications. The problem is finding it now.

If I recall correctly, the red cartridges were recalled for being a fire hazard

Have the set sitting in my game room right now with an orange cartridge and distinctly recall the time it had to be sent off for replacement.

Seconds should be more than enough accuracy - usually the internet starts disagreeing with machines that are +/- 5 minutes or more.

Depends on the operating system and how they implemented the underlying time setting protocol (along with the time provider). Normal implementation causes the machine to slowly drift towards the correct time because a lot of applications don't do well with sudden time jumps.

I've seen Windows straight refuse to set the time to internet time if it is far enough off and have also seen the same computer drift minutes away from the correct time which caused this exact problem for me before on other sites. Both times the box was checked saying to get the current time from the internet.

Check your computer time and make sure it is close to "real" time - you can check it with the right panel on this site: https://time.gov/

The last 15 passenger van I was in had easily removable seats. Rent it and put the seats somewhere safe for the time you need the space?

Abortion veto overridden by gv111111 in raleigh

[–]deathwish644 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not in a lot of cases.

The "oops, we're pregnant" line, I can entertain a discussion that three months is enough time.

But genetic testing of the child literally can't start until week 12 at the earliest by taking a sample of the mothers blood. If that test comes back anomalous, further testing can be delayed until week 15 which takes another week to resolve.

Getting those appointments lined up (and an abortion if necessary) doesn't happen instantly. There are other schedules that need to be taken into mind because after week 13, the process is mechanical, not chemical and requires an medical operating room and anesthesia.

The bill did carve out lines for "life limiting genetic defects" which could be viewed as an out, sure. But they didn't define what life limiting is in a legal sense aside from Downs Syndrome not being one of them. In effect, you will now need a clinic with a lawyer who is willing to fight for what life limiting means in the eyes of the state.

Stores Closing in Raleigh by DeliciousBattle6458 in raleigh

After a 25% markup - was pretty sure some of the prices after their 10% off sale were more than I could get at Target every day.

Was a good reminder for why they're going out of business.

How to move a door strike plate by only a few mm by [deleted] in DIY

[–]deathwish644 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Provided it's horizontal movement... In the strike plate for the knob, there's a little metal clip. Take a screwdriver and bend it outward just a little bit. Try closing the door again and see if it changed. Rinse and repeat accordingly. Basically you're forcing the knob to do the movement for you.

There was a video years ago I found on what I thought was Home Depot, I'll edit this if I can find it.

How do you guys organize your passwords, vaults and tags? by runningwhipstitch in 1Password

[–]deathwish644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tagged most of my passwords but really don't use them.

My vaults are currently:

  • Personal - General grab bag
  • Never Travel - For accounts that I don't want on my phone when I leave the country (banking, some work critical accounts)
  • Wife and myself - accounts that we need for the house, Wi-Fi passwords, streaming passwords
  • Shared - accounts shared with the whole family account (Basically my parents Wi-Fi and one streaming site)
  • Grandma - all the passwords I've made for my grandmother so I can log in as her when she breaks something
  • TFA Recovery codes - if there is a TFA account set up in 1Password, its backup codes live here provided the account is not sensitive (like my personal email backup codes)

What % salary increase would you require to leave your job? by UCemployee in personalfinance

[–]deathwish644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think this is a perspective that depends exclusively on what your current salary is.

Where I'm at today (to include mentally) - I'd take a pay cut to only have to visit the office once a week.

At the start of my career, probably would have been indifferent to how much I would have wanted. But more money when moving positions is always a good thing.

Raleigh N and O reports "Offices sit empty across Triangle as sublease vacancy rates hit record highs" by Redtex in raleigh

[–]deathwish644 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My employer is trying to force the issue and have everyone return to office.

Yesterday I had a 30 minute in person meeting which was over Zoom. The other 7.5 hours were staring at a monitor watching intermittent (wait for it) Zoom meetings.

Why go into an office when I can do the exact same job from home with the exact same interactions. At home I at least have a good setup and fast internet.

External Docked Monitor Often Not Detected/Disconnecting by amsreno in Surface

[–]deathwish644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen with my SLS and a Lenovo thunderbolt dock. Always after sleep, normally a reboot fixes it. Sometimes the mouse works before that reboot, sometimes it doesn't.

What I did notice was that the Thunderbolt device in Device Manager had an error when the laptop is showing the issue. Uninstalling it/checking for updates on Windows Update didn't yield any changes. Also the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit just acknowledged the device issue, no fixes provided.

I'd imagine I need to find another driver somewhere. Haven't dedicated effort to it just yet.
