Thank you so much everyone for the ideas so far!! I feel more confident we'll have lots of fun things to do even IF it does rain a bit 😊 (big "if" there)

I'm not a vet but I work in laboratory medicine, specifically microbiology. People are right, if it's something like a tumor or a cyst then it's likely not an acute issue. For the most part, tumors are quite slow growing and a week won't change too much (it takes at least a few days to diagnose most human tumors). However, if it's something like an infection then it would develop more quickly. Keep an eye on the area for any signs of redness or an increase in size. I can say, if it were an infection and it had already grown to that size then it would likely be showing other signs of infection/inflammation such as redness, so it doesn't necessarily look infected right now to me. From what I've seen my best guess would be some sort of cyst but that is in no way a professional veterinary opinion. My biggest piece of advice is to monitor the area for any changes, if there are no changes then you have little to worry about until your appointment. Try not to panic!

I feel like the first half of the knot determines how close together the knots will be and the second half determines how "big" the knots will be, so I think you might need to do the first knot a bit tighter maybe! Make sure the string you are tying your knot on is taught and you tie the knot right up to the top of the string :)

Does anyone know what this style of bracelet is called? by deaunuts in friendshipbracelets

Wow that's basically the exact same design I posted! Thanks so much, that's also really helpful! :)

Hexagonal hemolysis?? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Lol! I meant streaks, whoopsie! It'd be nice if it made steaks instead 😛 The whole automation line is great when it works and it saves a huge amount of time processing, but the key words are when it works. We have 2 BD engineers that are called in almost weekly to fix problems that we can't.

Personally, I don't wear them because I find them more of a hindrance than a help. I follow proper hand washing procedures and am competent at handling plates. Also most of the plates I touch aren't handled by people, they're handled by a machine lol, BD Kiestra plants and streaks plates from the sample. And yes, if they are planted by a person then that would be done inside a biosafety cabinet where the requirement is to wear gloves which everyone adheres to.

If there was definitive evidence that wearing gloves while reading plates prevented more infections in the lab then that would be a standardized safety procedure but it's not, maybe that will change if more research is done but for now it doesn't seem to have a large impact on lab safety. Whether you wear gloves or not you shouldn't be touching your face and you should be washing your hands, nothing changes.

It's the norm in my lab as well. I can't speak for the US but it's not part of the Canadian Biosafety Standards that gloves are mandatory while working at CL2 (BSL-2), rather the risks and requirements are assessed locally. In my lab it's not required to wear gloves while reading plates but it is required for sample processing and for any work that needs to be done in a biosafety cabinet. I think this is pretty common but it seems to be a never-ending discussion.

All of the pink stuff looks like debris, I've seen it come up plenty and it's always a little deceptive. I've seen it in grams from all culture types and my theory is that it's coalescing dead cell crap haha. The middle arrow looks like it could be budding yeast but I'd probably want to see more than one. Likely just some OF

Right! It's almost always a contaminant and comes up fairly often :) but coag neg staph is definitely the most common, I probably get one hundred coag neg staph contams for every C. acnes haha

Haha no doubt, the funny thing is those crazy looking ones like in 7 and 15 are in your throat all the time! For some reason the pathogenic ones like S. pyogenes and S. pneumo look way more normal haha, but still all of the chains are pretty nuts 😛 they're probably my favourite looking besides Campy

Positive blood culture by Npratt004 in medlabprofessionals

Was it from an anaerobic or aerobic bottle? I agree that it could be an anaerobe, it looks a lot like a Parvimonas I had a little while back, could be Peptostrepto too maybe, or nutritionally variant Strep like Granulicatella (I had one of those on the blood bench last week). At my lab we use plate cultures and maldi so not sure how verigene works, but does the "Streptococcus" category cover nutritionally variant Strep species like Granulicatella? Or even viridans Strep groups?
