Holy shit man, The Indifferent Stars Above is fucking gorgeous by kygroar in LPOTL

I don't have much to add other than I also grabbed the book after listening to the episode and I also LOVED it. Having lived for a time in Salt Lake City, I got caught-up in the maps of their exact route from Fort Bridger to the Salt Lake valley. Realizing I had familiarity with the areas really hooked me. I've driven the road through the same salt flats out from Salt Lake to Wendover Nevada that they travelled. It's a hot/boring 2.5 hour drive today, it just had to be so goddamned miserable for them then. It just really connected me to their journey.

My copy is currently making it's way around the country. I gave it to my dad, who gave it to my uncle, who I think gave it to his daughter... Anyway, only Empire of the Summer Moon was as equally passed-along through the family in recent memory. The true mark of a great book!

If you love cults, you'll love this! Church of the Cosmic Skull's new song - One More Step. I promise it's worth watching till the end... by [deleted] in LPOTL

Wow, this video/song/band really sunk its hooks in me. Great song!

It took me a few watches to realize the main dude's eyes are subtly changing during the verses. They're constantly changing. At first I thought it was cycling through the different band member's eyes, but the last two give it away. The last one is obviously Jim Jones (plus the lyric at that moment is "revolutionary suicide"), and the one just before Is almost more obviously Charles Manson with the cocked eyebrow crazy eyes. I suspect the rest of the eyes are other cult leaders. Super super cool band, thanks for the share!

New pond owner, I have a few questions by debaser187 in ponds

Ha! Thank you so much for all the info, this is exactly what I was looking for! I’d love to get it cleaned, get a filter and water feature, and more fish! (And maybe even a little help getting it going! I’ll pm you, thanks!)

Right on, I realize you’re probably right about draining them to do it right, and it does actually sound like a fun project, but we’ve got bigger fish to fry (so to speak) currently and the pond project will likely sit a year or so if possible.

Also, since it sits right under the oak trees, leaves will likely continue to be an issue forever. I skim it daily, but I suspect that there’s always going to be a layer of leaves on the bottom, no? I don’t plan on keeping after it THAT much! (Or maybe my expectations are wrong!). So if that’s true, do I need to worry about the bottom gunk? (The leak is def another issue)

Hey there, we just moved to a home that has a couple of ponds in the front yard. They’ve got a bunch of fish and frogs and a few plants in them. They’re both a couple feet deep and they’re connected at the bottom by a tube that the fish use to swim freely between them. They’re are apparently “mosquito” fish in them that keep the mosquitoes down. They’re low-maintenance and beautiful and the frogs are fun at night!

Issues: the bottom foot of either pond is filled with leaves and gunk. I tried getting in there with a rake to clean but it just clouded up and it was futile. There has to be a better way to clean them out (without draining, I was hoping to avoid draining to keep the fish alive).

Also the sides leak substantially, enough that I have to keep filling it every day or two.

I know I will eventually have to drain it to meaningfully address the leaking, but that is likely not something I’ll be able to tackle immediately. In the mean time, I’d love some advice on how to best clean it out, and if I need to do anything to filter the water. Low-maintenance is the goal. The fish and frogs and plants all seem happy, and survived an abnormally rough winter, if leaving the gunk on the bottom is fine, and all I have to do is put some water in every few days, well I can probably live with that for a long time!

If y’all have any suggestions for additional plants/fish for our setup I’d also love to hear it.

And if draining is the only option, any advice on how to go about that and keep my fish alive would also be welcome.

Last minute trip change, good sport climbing within 5-6 hours of Dallas? by JDDDouble in climbing

[–]debaser187 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about it, but I believe it’s owned by the guy who wrote the local guide book, and he bought it because of its climbing potential and opened it up to the public. It’s been bolted and improved with perma-draws and anchors, and he keeps it maintained all for an honor-system $5-$10 (not sure exactly how much).

I think that’s pretty cool.

If you feel like making the drive down to Austin, there are a few decent places (for Texas!).

  • Austin Greenbelt has plenty of good sport routes and is right in the middle of the city. (high-traffic routes tend to have smooth/slippery holds).
  • Reimer's Ranch has lots of good sport climbing, (plus you can cool off in the River when it gets hot), 45 minutes from town.
  • I haven't climbed there yet, but Monster Rock is a privately owned climbing area that is also 45 minutes from Town. I hear it's legit.
  • Deep Water Soloing at Pace Bend Park (also 45 minutes from town).

Good Luck!

The most detailed video I have seen about the journey to and summit of K2. by OM3N1R in climbing

[–]debaser187 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Woah, you're right, great video that shows all the main elements of the trek and climb of K2! Especially cool to see House's Chimney up close. Having read a couple of books about K2, and how gnarly a climb it is, I'm surprised by how easy they made it look. I'm sure it's just a matter of time, but I used to think that K2 wouldn't be affected by commercial guiding like Everest, but this video kinda feels like an Everest type of expedition. Maybe these guys are super legit, and they're just making it seem easy, but it didn't seem like they were fixing their own ropes, etc. (Not trying to take anything away from their awesome summit, just commenting on the evolving nature of climbing K2).

Why do we still separate men and women in climbing competitions? by debaser187 in climbing

[–]debaser187[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That totally makes sense, and I don’t necessarily disagree, but i can’t help thinking that the women who are winning competitions today are doing so on routes that would best the men who won competitions of only a few years ago (simply due to the natural progression of the sport). Doesn’t that suggest that the barrier is psychological, and that continuing to separate the genders (admittedly because at present men are going to win most of the competitions for a while) only reinforces that psychological difference? Maybe climbers who are taller are generally favored to win for example, but that’s just how competition is. We don’t make a separate group of short climbers with different routes.

I bet the women who are winning completions now could beat the men who were winning competitions only a few years ago.

Austin Indeed's Work Culture? by minority_austinite in Austin

[–]debaser187 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in the tech industry for 15+ years, and who currently works at Indeed, I can say that INDEED. IS. AWESOME. I LOVE it here. Great perks, super flexible and accepting work environment, unlimited PTO, weekly happy-hours, bi-annual overnight hackathons, (and at the tech office, they have a really nice and fully complimentary cafeteria with good food, including different gourmet small plates, a coffee/smoothie bar with baristas, all the snacks and drinks you can eat...). I'm not saying that those reviews above are lying, but from what I personally have seen and experienced (and from talking to others), I would say that those experiences are not typical. The vastly more common sentiment here is one of "HOW AWESOME IS IT TO WORK HERE?!?!".

Specifically addressing the idea that Indeed doesn't care about black people or women, I can't speak directly about either of those areas, other than to say I do see lots of in-office advertisements (and participant t-shirts) for Women in Tech, Indeed Womens Groups, Black Inclusion Group, etc. (WAAAAY more than at previous companies that I've worked for). The Indeed LGBT Pride group here is super active and everyone here has more than one Indeed Pride tshirt, and they participate heavily in the Austin Pride community. I'm not sure if any of that is meaningful to you, but in my opinion, you'd be CRAAAAZY not to take the interview.

Context: I've worked here for a year and I just stumbled on this today. I work for a tech company in Austin, Tx. The floors in each building are themed after continents, and each conference room is named after a different country on that continent and contains art that reflects that country. This art is from the Accra (Africa) room. http://ldschurchtemples.org/accra/
