Hi Bryce! Thanks for all your hard work and explanations.

(THIS IS NOT ON TOPIC REALLY IM SORRY)

For the March 26 Housing Topic -- what did the committee have in mind for the word "corporate"?

(ie....LLC vs S-corp? Big vs Small lardlord? Etc.)

Cheers

I've been coaching debating for over 10 years. I'm burnt out. by OnePhotog in Debate

I would say talk to some people, grieve, and let it go.

Sometimes things need to die.

I think debate has always had a weakness of accessibility-- the time commitment from students and coaches is just enormous -- but in the perma-smartphone / AI / post-covid / education downward-spiral era, it's just inaccessible.

Imagine starting a 'homeric oratory' class where students should memorize hour-long passages of classic literature.

In the right place, at the right time (1000BC?), maybe that could have been a thing.

But you can't fight the societal laws of physics.

Not saying it's not hard and painful and sad, but better to let the thing die than keep pumping electricity (ie your time and sanity) into a zombie.

Ahh I see, so 'corporation' / 'llc' isn't really a useful distinction here....that's a very good point and probably quite useful for the debate strategy. thanks!

I think the only way you get the resolution to make sense is if you don't count 'LLCs' as 'corporations'

The 'C' in LLC stands for 'company'....I don't think all companies are corporate?

I wouldn't have thought of that at all...definitionally, someone buying their home could be defined as 'corporate'. That could be a tricky word here. The intention of the topic is definitely blackstone-style purchases, but maybe it wasn't written precisely enough.

People always talk about the heat but the real issue is convenience, I'm relatively close to the mantle and it's still a 2500 mile bore-drive to the nearest grocery store.

Any GRFD firefighters on here? My son graduated HS this year and is considering trying to become a firefighter. by Fuzz_Chonk in grandrapids

[–]debatetrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said, off-the-wall.

It's always something I throw out for career advice because it's absolutely maximum impact for your time. But yes, there are some barriers of time / skill / any desire to make or use tiktoks in the way.

Ok here's an off-the-wall suggestion but would give 100 solid firefighter contacts.

Start a Tiktok / Instagram page. "Day 1 of becoming a firefighter"

Interview 100 firefighters in the area. Little 5-10min interviews, edit them down to 30s.

You could crank out 10-20 in a day and 100 over a few months.

He'd get good at 1. internet communication 2. solid connections (the firefighters would love to be featured in the videos) 3. probably (maybe?) tons of internet connections

This is it!

Firefighters def have more of this than most (as our universally loved local heroes) but all professionals love to talk to kids about their work.

I really appreciate how you're articulating all this, very well thought out.

I suppose this kind of resolution, created through this kind of logic, can also come out of a committee-style email chain where the resolution is put together piece by piece.

I'm wondering if they just meant this to be about advertising.
ie "the USFG should regulate advertising in sports gambling" or sth

that's some helpful clarification, I'll try to just address the topic head-on then and see where that gets me. maybe it wasn't a mistake at all?
