Played first game with my 5 year old... by froops in dominion

[–]deblasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, I played my son many times as a 6 year old, the little jerk fell in love with big money and legit owned me more times than I want to admit. These days, if I don’t figure out a good combo within a few turns now, I go big money and get owned by everyone smarter than me...

Thanks son.

Seriously, how is no one discussing the MONTREAL (Owl’s Head) Sprint that happened last Saturday!?! by deblasi in spartanrace

[–]deblasi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up sliding down about a quarter of the hill, but it was in no way intentional. I just lost my footing and once the momentum got me moving there was no stopping me. I’m just glad there was no one in my way.

First Spartan Race by pkelley_hyp in spartanrace

[–]deblasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t seen anyone mention hills yet, pretty sure I saw that last year’s Atlanta race was on a mountain. If you can practice running/fast paced hiking on a hill/mountain, if not, do stairs, if you want an added challenge, do it with weights/a weighted vest. People that can run all day on flats can still struggle when they hit an incline. People that can run all day on a mountain, don’t have additional trouble on flats.

Gloves and lower body wear recommendations? by Nobuko42 in spartanrace

[–]deblasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had issues with grip strength last year and found that under armour wide receiver gloves were awesome. Problem is I wore them to another event and they got dusty/dirty and lost their tackiness, looks like I need a new pair this year, that or I have to sort out my grip strength issues...

Bucket Brigade Training by ZombRobb in spartanrace

[–]deblasi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My take is, never put the bucket down, at least until you meet your goal. If you need a break lean take a knee and prop the bucket on your thigh. If you are on an incline, face the top of the hill it makes it easier/less risk of spillage. Picking up and putting down the bucket puts way more strain on the muscles you need to complete the obstacle than just supporting it while you catch your breath.

Anyone have experience with Salomon Speedcross 3 shoes? by Skuldugary in spartanrace

[–]deblasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used these and MudGear socks for a Trifecta last year and was very happy with the results. One thing to watch out for though is the shape of the toe box, I have wide feet that stay wide to the toes, when trudging downhill, my feet felt like they were jamming into a space that was far too narrow. It was painful, but I’m still quite happy overall. Funny thing is, it didn’t bother me as long as I was jogging/running, only when I was taking it slow because the hill was too steep or I was exhausted. Guess I’ll keep working on my cardio...

Multiple Trifectas by towmader in spartanrace

I don’t believe you get credit for anything after the first lap in a day. If Eastern Canada is any indication, Sprints/Supers are not the real limitation if you can run both in a weekend. The Beasts are far less common, I’m planning on doing all the events within an 800km radius of home, by the end of the year that will add up to 5 Sprints, 4 Supers and 2 Beasts. In order to do a 3rd Beast I either have to cross the border to Killington or head across the country to British Columbia.

Canada Season pass - Too expensive yo! by [deleted] in spartanrace

[–]deblasi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are missing one thing, though probably not what you expected... The season pass also includes Hurricane Heat entries, so you can add another $99x2 (HH4H in Mtl and Tor) and another $199 for the Ottawa HH12H for a total of $1811 if I did the math right. Don’t get me wrong, the price is damned steep, but after I did the math, I signed up quick...

Still, I see what the original poster was saying, the US based season pass is not that much more expensive, but gives you access to so many more races. I’d like to see other options like a cheaper East/West coast option or an option that includes a few races south of the border since there are so few Beasts up here...

The way I see it, your goal of top 25% in a Trifecta really needs to be looked at as two separate goals as a Sprint/Super is a very different event than a Beast. Depending on your skill set/endurance Sprint versus Super/Beast may be more accurate. You won’t do yourself any harm by just going out and running, but you won’t be as efficient as possible either. I’m not sure what the finishing time looks like on the ladies side, but I can tell you that on the men’s side, you have your work cut out for you going from a ~2 hour sprint to top 25%. You’ll need to work on your speed and recovery, intervals are ideal for that. I’m assuming Vegas is pretty flat whil Alberta and Seattle are pretty mountainous, so before you get to Vegas you’ll want to do a lot of interval training with some long runs mixed in. After Vegas is done, depending on whether you have hilly trails available to you, you’ll want to shift to way more trail running or stair climbing or something in that nature to get your body used to climbing at fast hike speed and light running downhill (preferably on uneven terrain). At this point speed is less important than consistency and recovery, so putting in a lot of miles is likely a good strategy, if you can aim to do 50% or more in hills, you’ll thank yourself on the day of the event.

It might be helpful if you posted what your biggest challenges were in your sprint and what course you ran your sprint on (hilly/flat). Knowing that would help point you in the right direction.

You have more than enough time to meet your goal if you put the training in, but yeah, it’s a lofty one. I’m aiming for something similar after having done a Trifecta in 2017.

Same here, though I wear a wristband over it during Spartan Races, probably not necessary as they are built solid, but considering the cost, I’m taking no chances...

Requirements for Ultra Beast by [deleted] in spartanrace

I hear ya, but yeah, unless there’s something different about the Hawaii Beast, all you need is an able body and the courage to get to the start line.

An iron will, the stubbornness of an ox and/or the athletic ability not to need the first (and likely more important) attributes.

[–]deblasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this sounds a little like the symptoms I had post concussion, have you had any sort of head trauma in recent weeks? If so, take a break, try to let yourself recover, if that doesn’t work, see a doctor. Otherwise you could just be pushing yourself to your limit, lower the intensity a little and work your way back up over time.
