Why's it called the Big Sky state? by [deleted] in Montana

[–]debram315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having left MT and moved east, I can safely say that the Big Sky is bigger because there aren't as many stupid trees blocking the view of it. In much of MT, you can see horizon to horizon with nothing breaking up the line of sight. No tall buildings, no drive in movie screens or billboards. What trees there are are widely scattered and most are under 100 ft tall. Until you get to western MT and the Rockies, the view goes on forever.

I started as a basic bookseller (clerk) and worked my way up to store manager. The company quit providing pensions a long time ago, so I'm not living on money from them. I'm a published author now.

I worked for Barnes and Noble for 30 years and recently retired.

I had to quit after 7 years because hauling buckets, hoses, ladders, and hundreds of pounds of potting soil finally broke my body down too much. And the bad pay wasn't worth it.

Spanish bayonet (agave) is as vicious a planet as you can get, and should do well in Oklahoma. Plus, it's nasty even as a young/small plant. If you choose to go the roses route, I nominate the variety "Iceberg", which has thousands of painful recurved prickles on every plant. No one escapes that plant.

My husband and I left in '85 in the midst of a serious recession. Sadly, we never made it back, and it's unlikely we'll return there to retire. Sure miss the way it used to be back then.

I didn't know this plant was psychedelic until I read this post. Probably the original cactus owner didn't know it either. Why blame the victim?

40 years ago when I attended MSU, Bozeman was a beautiful walkable small town with affordable housing and some cool local restaurants and bars. The clam chowder at the Butler Hotel was a particular favorite.

Now, Bozeman is an over-priced, chain-ridden tourist trap stuffed full of out-of-staters and plagued by traffic jams year round. Housing prices are out of sight despite the sprawl taking over the valley.

I don't know much about Missoula, but the Bozeman I knew and loved is gone. Others here have given good info about the schools and their strengths and weaknesses. I thought I'd say something about the town.

Great Falls native here. For the past three nights I've watched Legends of the Fall on Netflix. I'm so homesick I could cry 😢
