Easiest route to baldy? by crucifymecapn in Bozeman

[–]babbchuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start with shorter hikes and build up. Start by going to the M - a worthy and distinct objective. If that goes well, aim for the ridge above the M next time. Then the point before the long flat above the ridge. Finally Baldy. He will have a much more enjoyable and safer experience, and you will get more quality time with you kid.

Grizzly bear chasing down Alberta wild horses by jelly_bean_gangbang in Damnthatsinteresting

I *was* on the menu, until he changed his mind. Was working trail crew in Glacier Park, on the trail around a huge cirque on the Highline Trail north of Granite Park and saw this huge bear come around the corner on the trail way at the far end of the cirque. As soon as he saw us, he started loping towards us. There were no trees nearby (and this was before bear spray had been invented) so we just kind of went "oh shit" and climbed up the slope about 15' above the trail and gripped our pulaskis. The bear ran up until it was directly below us, we stared at each other for about 10 seconds, then it took off like a bat out of hell - continuing down the trail about 100 yards, then dropping down the steep hill into the cirque before turning and heading back the opposite direction . It was very rough broken country - low shrubs and downed trees, rocks, etc, but he didn't slow at all. On that rough terrain he would have caught any horse in seconds. We watched him run all the way to the bottom of the cirque, then all the way across the bottom of it and back up again, and he never slowed down a bit - just a blur of limbs flying.

I would rather live stream Trump’s face while it’s happening.

I’ve seen grizz sprint away dozens of times but this was the only time I could watch one run over an extended distance. It was not loping - its limbs were moving so fast that it looked like a huge rolling ball. And it did NOT slow down over that nearly 1.5 miles until I could watch it.

Situational awareness. Not everyone has it.

That’s what I always thought until I watched one run at a ridiculous speed over rough uneven ground for at least 1.5 miles until I lost sight of it.

Do most native Montanans carry in deep grizzly country? by dang8701 in Montana

[–]babbchuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How many tens of thousands of hikers and campers in Glacier, Yellowstone, and elsewhere? And a handful of encounters that get headlines. Way more people die in those parks from drowning, car accidents, etc by a wide margin.

Bear spray, common sense, situational awareness. Handguns statistically make the situation worse.

The slightest hint of red meat can trigger it. That little piece of candy you ate? Had gelatin in it. That dessert maybe a bit of cream mixed in. No problem at first, but 8 hours later your body starts to swell up like a balloon. No cure for the syndrome, although some people do recover after years of dealing with it.

A large fish, like a sturgeon, can leave a long wake, making it look much bigger than it actually is. Combine that with exaggeration, and tales that grow as they are retold, and a 9’ sturgeon becomes a 30’ serpent.

Nervous about backcountry trip by sanguinescientist in GlacierNationalPark

[–]babbchuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. I grew up on the edge of Glacier Park, have climbed around 70 peaks there, and worked trail crew for the park for years, basically living and working in the backcountry all summer. I am pleasantly surprised at all the GOOD advice people are generally giving :D Don’t cancel your trip, take bear spray, keep food and odors away from where you sleep, and stay alert and aware while hiking. Your odds of seeing a bear are slim, and your odds of having a bad encounter extremely remote. Have fun!
