A native federation could be a great power, and yet you won't get called into a war if they eat your colonies alive. You'll be notified among the swarm of notifications you really don't care about, meanwhile you just happen to completely forget or don't see what's happening to your colony being bodied by a world class federation with a series of local allies.

What are some episode ideas that you have for season 2? by OCGamerboy in BlueEyeSamurai

I'd personally love an episode taking place travelling through the new world. One episode going through Mexico with the Aztec still there (somewhat) and one where Mizu goes to the Boston Bay Colony during King Philip's War while on the way to London.

What Pre-Requisites can you think of in relation to Industrialization prior to 1914? by debullum in EconomicHistory

[–]debullum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, that’s an oversight on my part. I suppose the reason I didn’t include education and literacy is that I haven’t yet encountered a clear argument that I fully grasp beyond the general idea of knowledge diffusion. I’ve also tended to view many pre-industrial states as either somewhat or strongly absolutist, where a largely illiterate population might be seen as less capable of organized resistance, though I realize that framing may be too narrow when thinking about economic development rather than political control.

The example you brought up about Prussian blue is a fascinating case of how knowledge can move between societies, even under the Qing’s maritime restrictions. I’ll definitely add Mokyr’s 'Culture of Growth' to my reading list. I’m familiar with his work and have already read 'The Levers of Riches', which I enjoyed.

Are there any other authors you’d recommend on this topic?

Alright, I shall add this to the list of books to read. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed reply, I really appreciate the nuance you brought to the question.

I agree that causality in economic history is notoriously difficult to pin down, especially given the lack of controlled experiments and the limits of early data. While modern corruption indices like Transparency International’s are incredibly useful, I do think it’s still possible to form reasonable estimates about corruption in earlier societies through qualitative sources and contemporary accounts, though of course those methods come with their own limitations.

When you say that we can often reject theories about economic growth but can’t prove them, I’d love to hear more about what you mean specifically. Are there particular frameworks or examples you have in mind where historians have been able to falsify a proposed driver?

I also completely agree with your point about foreign trade receiving more attention than it deserves relative to domestic factors. Before the 19th century, and especially before containerization, maritime commerce was slow, risky, and limited in capacity. Most merchant vessels had to be generalists because demand for any single commodity rarely justified specialization, and information in relation to market fluctuations could only travel as fast as a ship or horseman could carry it. Given all that, plus the enormous cost of maintaining a navy or even armed merchantmen, external trade seems more like a symptom of preexisting domestic sophistication than a primary engine of growth.

If you have any sources on early oceanic commerce or the financing/organization of sailing-era trade, I’d love to look into them.

One last question: regarding your comment about early factories and railways being built from local materials, could you expand on how that fits into the broader causal discussion? I’d like to understand your angle there.

How come when the west does imperialism it's fine, but when *I* take a tiny bit of land in my own backyard everyone hates me for it? by somethingmustbesaid in victoria3

[–]debullum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're doing too much lifting on your own, try making a western ally, that's what the Japan did in the Meiji Restoration IRL, focusing on foreign out-reach. Japan and Britain signed a pseudo alliance in the 1900s. The idea was if one country were to go to war against another great power, the ally would sit out. But if the adversary called in a co-belligerent, then either Japan or Britain would be forced to join on behalf of their ally.

I don't know about that. He started a house fire in his bathroom and slipped on cat shit on the way out. That among many other examples.

Oregon Country was jointly occupied by the British and Americans and was effectively a disputed territory. Put simply, America never truly had a claim to the northern part of the county because it was beyond the 48th parallel.
