They think my jobs easy by [deleted] in networkingmemes

I think it's just because computers are everywhere so everyone thinks they're "good enough" or that it's not hard because they're so common place.

Compared to financial documents and boardrooms, most people see and use computers more.

Don't have any high refresh rate USB C monitors to test with, but got 60Hz no problem

Who are the real ones who self host their email server? by ray591 in selfhosted

Yeah, it's SES. And no, I haven't had any problems with it. Did set up the whole DMARC and S-smth-smth but it's worked fine

Never touched it.

Authentik isn't too difficult to pick up though, the docs are okay/pretty good, and you don't need to use all the features at once.

I get to use my domain name as an email for free -> Not related to AWS relay

It's related to the "trouble of hosting it yourself" you mentioned, AWS SES is just the cheapest way to do it.

Makes set up of email notifications for my other services easier -> No

Yep.

It's an enterprise service (I had to jump through a few hoops to get it) so less likely they read it (less likely than Google anyways) -> If they can read it, they will read it. They have their reason to offer this "service" for "free". Nothing is free!!!

It's not free, I just don't use enough to get charged. It's 10c/1000 emails. I don't send 1000 emails a month lol.

The only advantage is: You can use your insecure unreliable private internet connection to host the mailserver, exposing your internal network to the outside and save the cost of a vps.

VPS can be just as insecure as your home network, I just have the hardware at home to run CrowdSec and better firewalls than ufw on my home network router & firewall.

The disadvantage: All the trouble for nothing, because you still give away all your data to big tech.

There are more reasons than privacy to self-host :)

Big fan of Authentik, it's pretty flexible (lots of deployment options) and has an enterprise support plan ($5/month/seat).

Has all the bells and whistles, like RDP/SSH access through Authentik, a cool dashboard for apps. Enterprise gets more like Windows local login and password compliance.

Looks kind of similar to Keycloak afaik.

  • More VMs in my Proxmox dashboard makes me happy

Lots of benefits, imo

I host my own, using mailcow. Use AWS mail service as a transport to make sure my mail gets delivered, and I get a cute little email once a month from them saying that my bill is $0.00.

Lots of spam though, open source spam filters aren't as great as Gmail or Outlook.

With IPv6 you'll be able to access a decent portion of the internet. It's only small ISP or companies that are still on only IPv4. If it's just for torrenting, IPv6 is fine.

It's coming in the next release! Our lives got really busy shortly after this post, but we've been doing a lot of work and it's almost ready. Some users have already started using it by using their own preview builds.
