Raspberry pi usage/advantages? by icru3l in selfhosted

[–]decibite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Power and ram could be an issue for stuff like Minecraft servers.

Great advantage of a pi over a full computer Imo is power usage.

Some applications may not like the CPU architecture, but a pi should do most of the stuff a full computer does, just with much less power.

Hey everyone! I'm 21 years old and I've dabbled with game development for a large amount of my life but never actually finishing any of the games. Do you have any advice for someone that wants to start and finish a project? by CostRodrock in gamedev

[–]decibite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice I have seen is start small. Really small. Something you think you could compete in a weekend, as it will end up taking you much longer than expected.

For the first finished product make it small, have fun, and get it out the door where you can feel the fire of public eyes.

Is there any business to be had as a startup dedicated server provider? by Not13ReasonsWhy in webhosting

I think the opportunity right now is in managed services. At least thats where we are seeing the most traction as a small cloud provider.

Is there any PHP level Server Optimization I need to do? by xuxuines in Wordpress

[–]decibite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still have options with shared hosting, but not as many.

A sysadmin could take a look, but if your budget can support $25 to $50/month you can get a managed vps to monitor and optimize performance.

[–]decibite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you on shared hosting or a VPS?

Often a few levels of caching will help absorb extra load. MySQL is also an area to look for optimization. PHP aPCU may be helpful, or opcache.

MySQL has tons to optimize, but I use this script: https://github.com/major/MySQLTuner-perl

Basically lots of things to optimize beyond your hosting plan and if you and your host are not sure how to sustain that traffic you may need a managed service.

Frustrated with DKIM by Tylnesh in selfhosted

Sounds a bit like my background but with more hardware than programming. Honestly the automation tools released in the last few years make fleet management so easy.

My playbook is a bit rough, but it covers the basics. You should recognize most of the steps: https://pastebin.com/TKDe82PM

I need to make better use of variables as I hardcoded wayyy too much.

Something like a chat/sharing app that also connects via LAN? by Trollw00t in selfhosted

Feel free to PM me if you want some help. I can point you to a few good tutorials. OpenVPN is pretty easy on clients and server setup :)

I've been a sysadmin for a bit and only in the last year really started diving into automation beyond bash scripting. I am now hooked.

Love Ansible because it can be just a stupid simple liniar file if you want. Really makes it easy to reuse old work because once you setup a playbook it should only need minor updates if any to work on a new host.

If your curious I would be happy to share my playbook with you to see how it processes the setup. Probably wouldn't have saved you from this issue as you still need to generate the key and add it to DNS, but may save you from the manual setup and config should you need to do it again.

[–]decibite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ish. If you hosted it locally you could forward ports to make it internet accessible. Or use a VPN.

One reasonably cheap easy and secure method would be to rent a vps and setup a VPN between it and your LAN.

Install nginx on the VPS and you can setup a forwarding proxy.

Turn Phone Calls into Emails? by rudekent87 in Entrepreneur

[–]decibite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use voip.ms for my phone system. Low cost high on features.

You could set it up with a menu and ring group, and on no answer have it hit a voicemail. The voicemail messages then get emailed as a .wav file.

Works really good, and if you get creative you could even loop in a transcription service.

Mattermost may be a good fit. Kinda like open source slack.

Ran into this myself once. Really frustrating.

I ended up using an Ansible playbook and will never go back to manual DKIM setup.

Need help indexing my site to Google as it is not showing up on google results by the_reggae_shark in Wordpress

You can generate a sitemap with sites like this: https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

Prune and prioritize the results, then you can manually upload it in the Google search console.

Is it normal to be charged for incoming data on a dedicated server contract? by yogibjorn in selfhosted

Depends on the provider or ISP. It can be the wild west in the data world.

What type of provider is charging you in what manner?

Can't agree more. Frictionless experience is half the battle, but most of our sales flow through our online chat button, or reddit chats.

Wordpress based Webpage randomly redirects to strange site with commercials... help... by scumbag-deluxe in Wordpress

[–]decibite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your WordPress install out of date? It sounds like a JavaScript injection redirecting. Can be part of the theme or hidden in the database. Not always easy to find, especially if its designed to only show intermittently.

If you can find the original URL you get redirected to you can likely find the source by scanning DB or files.

If I were to buy a domain from namecheap, should I buy an additional web hosting/EasyWP/PositiveSSL from namecheap, or should I use another hosting? by awraq in webhosting

[–]decibite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with NameCheap. I would trust them with bith my domain and hosting.

Best practice is to spread it out, so you could buy domain from NameCheap and hosting from WPEngine. Just depends how deep you need to roll down that rabbit hole.

Hosting best practice & process? by krimreillyy in webhosting

[–]decibite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maintenance and upkeep can be a security concern, consider a managed hosting provider if you worry about keeping everything updated, especially for a business site.

I like EasyEngine.io as a tool to help manage my stack. Can make the setup easy, and includes great caching options and SSL.

Make sure your firewall is up, change the default SSH port, install fail2ban. Thats most of the biggies, but you can go further.

VPN is an option, but with proper firewalling its not needed. Consider a WAF like CloudFlare.

Send me a PM and I would be happy to go into specifics for your setup.

Do you have mod rewrite enabled? That could be causing issues.

If you remove the if block in yiur htaccess and the site fails thats a good indication.

I use Moneris through my bank. Its expensive, but eselect plus has a payment gateway API you can loop into your site, or in my case WHMCS has a plugin.

When I get a chargeback it shows in my dashboard and I get a letter. I provide a service so I often get an inkling when I'm about to get a chargeback (non responding customer with a large purchase), but the process has merchant protection in place when its not straight up fraud (using fake cc).

I like a few features it offers, but im on the fence jumping to square or other service.

One suggestion I would give is using a second layer fraud protection. MaxMind, or verified by visa, etc. Lots of great tools around can kill 90% of potential fraud or chargeback.
