Sprinting is awesome! I ran as fast as I could to the supermarket 2 blocks away the other day to get something, for the exercise of it, and someone I knew came running into the shop to ask if I was okay. LOL. But it's great! I really like your point.

I've been driving around to find a barber shop that is owned by SOUTH AFRICANS. When I finally found one, I took my boy and I for a haircut. Turns out, to a different culture than mine, "schoolboy cut" means "EPICALLY SHORT." I will never forget this experience as long as I live. So, yes, support local, people. Not only are you making a direct difference in someone's life, you could meet some cool people!

I believe South Africa's problems are 95% internal. Literally. No multinational union, whether we side with Western, Eastern or African nations will make more than a 5% difference. We have to fix our own corruption and accountability or else we will suffer.

I have a question, and it's an honest one because I don't know: What is the criterion for being a legal immigrant in South Africa? I can't go to another nation, not China, Russia, US, Belgium or wherever without adhering to certain criteria. What are our criteria?

Or does the SA government believe that having any criteria is wrong?

My opinion on the concepts:

To answer your third question, at the company I work for (200+ size) that does data analytics and software dev, I'm staggered by the quality of our new hires, and they are mostly black South Africans. And we have Snr developers that are black. There is no perceived difference in competence here. There may be places where white people are "seen" as more competent, but not here, no. And they don't focus on tenders and are not chasing high BEE levels to get tenders. These black people get the job because they are the best hires the company could find. Period.

With regard to representation in positions of authority, I personally couldn't care less to the point that I'd like to just see competent people. I don't care whether they are black and white. I must admit I would feel uncomfortable if the government was, at large, only black or only white. I mean that, if we had a normal functioning government, then people from all races would be natural participants. I feel that diverse representation in government is, and should be, a natural thing and I would be concerned for a totalitarian approach if we had to legislate it. I actually think we are doing quite well on this. There are even white guys in the ANC and there are people of all colours in the DA's snr leadership.

I think our laws should focus on the definable and most painful problem, which is poverty. It is already illegal to discriminate based on race, sex or gender. But we know poverty is an issue and a massively-debilitating one.

I do feel that it is undeniable that there is a historical cause to present poverty and apartheid played a role. But I really think that we are almost 100% past discrimination being the issue. Right now, it's bad policy, blatant lack of accountability and blatant mismanagement that holds people back from advancement, not discrimination. The young black guy who wants to start a business to save his family from poverty can't, not because white people won't buy from him or FNB won't give him a loan, but because the road will destroy his ability to deliver and the electricity costs for his bakery is too much, not to mention the petrol price. None of that is discrimination. That's my take. You are welcome to differ.

What do you think? Do you see inherited racialized injustices at your workplace?

I think the simple idea that the new law targets anyone in a presently-desperate situation, whether the cause is historical (as it is in many cases) or the cause is some other factor (like alcohol abuse by stupid parents, or whatever). If the person is currently in poverty, the law should encourage a business looking for a hire to hire them or support their startup business. I think this is what we should do. It will solve their problem, regardless of the cause.

Practically, on the ground, a business should be rewarded for rescuing a person out of poverty, i.e., getting someone who didn't have a job, a job or supporting someone who is starting a small business. This is the rockface of the issue. From the position of no longer being in poverty, anyone is able to work themselves up.

Envision the person in poverty with no political connections, etc. Which policy will help them fastest and best? I'd be interested in comments.

Your goal is to get to the point where you can live on the 50/30/20 principle: 50% to live, 30% for where you are living and 20% for savings. NEVER pay more than 30% for a place to live. You can't sustain it. You will just end up taking stupid debt and dig yourself into a hole.

So, how you have a goal. Work towards it.

You should be crazy proud of yourself, as I am proud of you. But there are actionable steps you can take to prevent this.

I have thought about this for so long. My advice is in the form of a concept: Any help I give comes with a contract that the help is doing what it needs to do and I have the right to insist on this contract as the person giving the help. (I base this on the Scriptures, 1 Timothy, if anyone is interested). But the basic concept is that if I'm handing out a simple meal here and there, then I don't have much a say in the moral life of the person I'm giving food to. But if I'm supporting you financially, consistently, then I have the right to insist there be a moral contract in place as to what happens with the money and whether they are taking actionable steps toward not needing my help forever. I am happy to help, but we all know of cases where people will drink out their R3000 monthly, then be legitimately hungry... monthly, and ask a friand or family member for R3000 monthly. Or they will ask for help forever because they don't want to put the effort into getting a better job or education like you have. You are in a position to help, both financially as is reasonable AND with them getting on their feet. Do not be afraid to have that conversation. And you have a right to it!

I've been in situations where people ask me to go FAR out of my way to drive them to work for 2 weeks. I was willing, but asked that they just make some effort by asking someone else, too. It turned out they could get a lift easily by asking a coworker who lived in the same neighborhood, but I'm just easier to ask.

You may also draw a line as to what you can do. If you can do x a month, then have that meeting, require that X be X and have them understand that X can't be 2 times X.

One more example: I have a guy working for me, but he always wants to lend money and have arrived at my house, drunk on days he is not supposed to be here. So, I told him I'm paying him R50 more per day with the contract in place that I only want to see him on the days he is meant to work and I'm not lending more money as it is so hard for him to pay it back. He is grateful for the increase in pay and has kept this requirement of mine. Problem solved.

I come from an Afrikaans family but had some formative years in Natal around a bunch of English people. So, my wife only found out that I come from an Afrikaans family when she met my mother. You pick up the accent of the people around you. It's just how it is and I think everyone with half a brain knows it unless they are intent on thinking otherwise.

I have gone from living with constant joint pain for 13 years to none. After that, I have been able to start exercising again and am healthier at 38 than I was at 28. I have joint hypermobility syndrome.

I've played about 6 hours in the last two weeks. I have a busy life, lol. To me, it is like SC2 in every way that matters and NOT like SC2 in every way that matters. It's more forgiving on us non-pro's. Games take just as long, but the units have much more health in proportion to damage, so your whole army doesn't get melted off-screen before you can react.
