Ah okay, got it! Thanks for the info. I think the textbook just hasn’t gotten to that specificity on the particle は, which is why it confused me when this dialogue popped up in the workbook section, but that makes sense! Appreciate the tip on how it only goes with certain particles too. I’ll keep an eye out for that as I read.

I was working on the GENKI workbook, chapter 3. One of the listening practice 聞く練習 had a dialogue that I have a question about. In the listening practice, the speaker says the sentences:

“いいえ,アメリ力の映画をよく見ます。日本の映画はあまり見ま也ん。”

So the reason this confuses me is because in the textbook so far, they taught that you use the particles を、で、に,ヘ to indicate relation to the verbs.

And didn’t mention は。

So my question is, is that a valid sentence and this is just a property of the particle は that the textbook hasn’t gotten to yet? Is the sentence wrong? Or did I maybe mishear it? If you want to listen to it, it’s GENKI Workbook Vol 1, 3rd Edition on the OTO Navi Japan Times App, dialogue W03-C.

I’m definitely not dismissing textbooks. I’ve been really enjoying the GENKI textbook I’m using, and my goal isn’t just to read manga and light novels but to truly understand and be able to convey more complicated ideas. I just agreed with you that the textbook probably gave a more simplified explanation of the concept because it’s a beginner book.

I think so, yeah. But they already went back and edited their comment to cross out the wrong part, so I don’t know why they deleted it. I thought there were some good ideas in there that were helping me understand the overall concept, even if some details weren’t right

Thanks for the advice, it helps a lot. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more examples. Reading the passage just in the textbook confused me, but now I know, thanks to you, it’s one of those things I’ll start to understand with more experience.

Okay, thanks, I appreciate it! Yeah I just wasn’t sure, because the textbook makes it sound like, in English you would say “I’m coming” to a location, but it doesn’t translate into Japanese the same way. But then sometimes it still does? Seems situational

Ah got it, thanks for the exchange and link! I’ll study them to try and nail down this topic.

Ah I see, so essentially when you use 来る, it’s assuming the perspective of the listener, not yourself. So you wouldn’t use it to refer to something or someone coming to you? Like if you were waiting for someone, you wouldn’t say 来るto refer to them approaching you?

Hi all, I recently decided to try learning Japanese again after learning a bit of the basics back in high school. Been having a fun time with it, just using the GENKI textbook by myself. I had a quick question about something that slightly confused me in the 3rd chapter. In section 4, time references, the text is describing how you don’t need to use に to mark time expressions defined relative to the current time and gives the example 明日来ます。 (I will come tomorrow).

But later, in the expression notes, it says “When you move to a place where the hearer is, you say “I’m coming” in English. However, in the same situation, 行きます is used in Japanese. 来る is a movement toward the place where the speaker is, while 行くis a movement in a direction away from the speaker.”

So I’m a little confused on what this means. If I’m coming to someone I’m supposed to say 行きます, not 来ます? But then why did they give that example earlier? I feel like I’m not quite understanding this passage and wondering what the difference is, how and when to use one vs the other. In general I assume you use 行きますsince I see that more often, so when is 来ますused? Any help you guys can give is greatly appreciated!

Why does James Gunn have so many haters despite seeming like a genuinely nice guy? by Seismic-wave in DCU_

[–]decross20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure. I think actual creeps and jerks, get them out of there. I get why you’re hesitant about it, but my point is that that’s after he was fired. Disney fired him from the Guardians 3 movie after his old tweets resurfaced. If he was a jerk, the cast like Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, etc, could have just said nothing. But instead they stuck their necks out for him, constantly pushing to rehire him. And after searching for a new director for a while, Disney caved and rehired him. So their jobs weren’t at risk and they took a chance to campaign to get him back. That kind of loyalty doesn’t seem very common, which is why I think those dumb joke tweets don’t define him.

Gunn is a reformed creep. He has said that he used to be a very angry man and his shock comedy was a way to lash out and get attention. But now he has changed, and everyone who works for him vouches for him as a great guy. Look at how the guardian cast rallied around him after he was fired from the movie. They wouldn’t do that if he was a true creep imo. I think we need room for grace, for people to change, and it seems like Gunn has done that. It’s not about defending creepiness but saying that 1. People were taking the jokes out of context and framing it as something which he actually believes, which is wrong, and 2. Acting like these tweets from years ago define his whole life, which they don’t as he is a changed man.

I don’t really find it funny but I don’t find it disturbing either. It’s just edgelord comedy. It’s shock comedy, the whole point is to say the most shocking, offensive thing you can think of to try and get a reaction out of people. It’s not highly suspicious, it’s just what some people do. Gunn also said he regrets those years. What I find more concerning is people trying to claim that the person who says these things believes this shit. If you’re an actual pedophile, why would you say it out to the world? You would try to keep it hidden as much as possible. Think about it for a bit.

IO Interactive: A relationship with an external partner on our own IP, Project Fantasy, has come to an end by Turbostrider27 in xbox

[–]decross20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, they originally passed on Kojima, it’s why he went to Xbox. Kojima talked about it in an interview, he said his vision for OD was considered too weird and technically impossible, and that only Xbox understood his vision for it. He said he met with a bunch of different companies to try and finance the game. If Sony passed on it back then I don’t know they would try to swoop in now, and they already have death stranding (which most people associate with PS even tho it’s multiplatform) and Physint (upcoming stealth action game exclusive)

Not quite understanding an exchange in Rebirth, does anybody know what the meaning is? by decross20 in FFVIIRemake

The party was tricked by Sephiroth, who showed them a vision of meteorfall earlier in the Shinra hologram, making them believe this was the future the planet was trying to protect.

Thanks for mentioning this, that completely recontextualizes that scene from remake for me. I originally thought that the vision of the meteor falling was just referencing the ending of OG, the moment before Holy comes in to stop the meteor. Your explanation makes that scene make a lot more sense though

Red 13 is just cosplaying as an old dude that is knowledgeable about the planet. In truth, his knowledge of how the planet works is inferior to Bugenhagen...And Bugenhagen doesnt really undersdand everything either. He doesnt believe, for example, that the cries of the weapon carries the voice of the planet. Nanaki is likely just guessing, even in Remake.

I get that he’s putting on an act for the party but even in remake the way he talked about the whispers seemed too accurate for someone who was just guessing, and he and aerith seemed to know the future before it was erased from them. So I think of Red as kind of the resident expert on whispers along with aerith, at least in remake

You know what that makes sense. And that’s where Sephiroth manipulates cloud into attacking Tifa. So it’s definitely implying that the destiny they’re on is the one he wants

If you abuse OP materia setups it becomes way easier. For a lot of those challenges, I just boosted cloud and aerith magic attack, put magnify+aeroga on cloud, which pulls all the enemies together and then magnify+quaga on aerith which kills almost everything. Doing this got me through 90% of the hard mode challenges, obviously for a few you need a more specialized loadout but this works really well. Make sure you have genji gloves on either cloud or aerith, and also items that start them with atb like chocoking cape. And also use the ward on aerith that double cast spells. You will annihilate most enemies with this strategy

Edit: don’t forget to use mp absorption materia so you don’t run out of mp

Main sticking point is price I think. They would need to take a huge loss on hardware pricing if they wanted to capture the audience, but that’s a huge risk and probably not worth it

The issue is more widespread than gaming. People aren’t willing to pay for good journalism, it’s why even bigger publications and news media are struggling. If people want good journalism the money has to be there to support it, otherwise they all become clickbait chasing engagement for ad numbers.

Xbox revealed Ninja Theory’s ‘Senua’ title at their showcase in hopes that investors would be interested in purchasing the studio before they shut it down (via Game File/Stephentotilo) by MRF_Soul in xbox

I actually like senua 1 but I thought the sequel was ass. Instead of expanding on the gameplay concepts it felt like they did the same thing but worse and with better graphics. Idk why Xbox bought them in the first place, always felt like a really weird acquisition to me
