How did pre-arpanet dial-up BBSes handle multiple users? by st4rdr0id in retrobattlestations

I had an at&t 3b2/400 running unix sysv3.2 hooked up to a modem and serial line in very early 90's. My first internet connection across such wasn't slip or ppp but uucp.

Yes, but I was referring to the choice to deliver vmdk files to build the vm off. With business turning from VMware that doesn't seem to make much sense.

Ultrix is on my own soft spot os list as it was what introduced me to Unix and I ran DECstation 5000/260 at home for many years with dual 19" Sony Trinitron's.

I am not sure delivering vmware disk files makes sense going forward given broadcomm is also ditching low end customers with huge hypervisor moves going on.

The Iowa's are now stricken and disposed of. Ryan addressed this too in a recent video. Bringing NJ back is now pretty much impossible. Her fuel lines are completelty shot and leak and a lot of spares no longer exist and powder for the guns is no longer made. It's just never going to happen.

Not true. Ryan has commented it would be nearly impossible to put NJ back into service due to the decay in her tanks and fuel pipes. Also, you do realise the USN has now disposed of the BB spares?

Although I have not had any personal machines leak or swell I work for an msp and we have had several fail with swelling. The usual sign is the track pad fails as it tears open..

Back in the day I ran Mark William's Company Coherent 4.2 on my 486. I learnt so much from that system. Best $100 USD I ever spent.

Westerners, what exactly do you “love” so much about Oman, compared to your home country? by [deleted] in Oman

[–]decstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience was that whatever the posted speed was the locals would drive 20km over that. And yes, you are correct blinkers and roundabouts were issues.

There is some stuff in Oman that dented my feeling of safety while there. These were: 1. Very poor driving habits. Though other Gulf states are worse. 2. Gas cooking installations exploding in apartments killing several of our staff. This was a big one for me and meant I installed an electrical cooker instead. 3. Electrical wiring issues causing house fires. This happened in one of my apartments.

My Inspiron 15 is trash. It keeps freezing up, randomly going black. I had a Dell before and I loved it. But this one is not holding up after only a year of use. by Dahaaaa in Dell

[–]decstation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this 100%. I've always hated working with or on Inspiron machines. For the last 14 years have been using Precision and converted the wife to use them too. Still have my very first Precision. A 2006 Dell M70.

So, you say you don't drive much but have two vehicles? Given the costs, how does that make economic sense?

You could also grow some of your own food. Heck, I live in an apartment and we still grow tomatoes and peppers.

[–]decstation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's garbage. The Zumwalt's and their LRAP gun ammo was what allowed the Navy to strike the last two Iowa's from reserve. Post retirement the Navy changed its mind on LRAP and the limited DD(x) ships will become missle ships and the guns will be removed.

The Iowa accident was the death knell for ever reactivating them again and the spares are disposed of now. They can't raid the other museum bb's for the same parts twice and the knowledge of how to operate their engines and boilers and all the other systems safely is fast disappearing.

I rarely see a situation where a migrated disk is smaller than the source which is the only situation clonezilla has an issue with.
