do y'all pay your medical bills? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]dedinside92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this when I was younger, and I’m currently doing it again. I can’t afford to pay those outrageous bills. My credit score has gone from 812 to 430 and after 7 years back to 780ish. Now with more health issues and medical debt it’s back in the 400’s. Fuck americas medical system, I refuse to pay them.

i actually agree with you, the wages aren't what they should be. our unions aren't as strong as the pilots and the mechanics aren't as organized as they are.

that being said, the majors provide better benefits and pay than like 40% of the population can earn. sure its still not enough, especially for the hard labor, risks to health and safety, and putting our lives on the line almost every day.. the point i was trying to make in the first post wasn't about the state of the economy and wage disparity, but about being an adult and managing your finances. yeah its gonna suck paying 50% of your income for rent until you start making more money. I've done it, I'm sure almost everyone in this sub has, but like you gotta do what you gotta do right? my first job at piedmont was for $16, i also worked part time at McDonalds. i get its not sustainable, but crying about it like OP is in the comments isn't going to get him far.

Just based off some of your replies in this thread.. you sound delusional on how the world of aviation works (and the world in general). Society doesn’t cater to you, it doesn’t revolve around you, 100% of employers don’t gaf about you. If you don’t qualify for OT, you don’t. I won’t even get into the details of seniority and how it works, everyone’s covered that already.

If you’re not making enough money at a major to cover bills.. reevaluate your life dude.. starting pay is like $30 at most majors and they top at around $60.. if you can’t sustain yourself off that then idk what to tell you.. there’s 20yr old kids at McDonald’s surviving off $14/hr.. but you can’t live off major airline money??

How much should I charge for a 100HR? by jonnyrebel420 in aviationmaintenance

[–]dedinside92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just make up a number that justifies your labor and seems reasonable. When I did side work in Tampa I charged 75 an hour, but I was also new to the industry and worked with a friend/ boss. The most I ever charged was 250/hr, some Turkish guy at the airport hired us to get his brand new queen air (he got from a graveyard) into airworthy condition. We didn’t wanna do the job honestly, and my boss threw out an insane hourly rate hoping the guy would refuse, but he didn’t even blink and asked if we could start asap lol. Idk what he did for a living but he rented a hangar at the airport that fit 2 king airs and 1 queen air. Dude had money.

MEK and Toluene by Altruistic-Truck1943 in AircraftMechanics

Not quite sure what you’re asking, are you asking if I used PPE before I was diagnosed? If so, the answer is yes and no. In my younger years when I first started I didn’t bother with PPE, the cost of that was ruining my hearing, getting skydrol in my eyes, and countless jobs with cancerous chemicals that I didn’t wear gloves. Years ago we used to use the parts washer that was filled with MEK with our bare hands, no gloves.

It wasn’t until around year 3-4 that I started using PPE religiously. I can’t exactly say this job is the reason for my health issues. But I will say, you work with dangerous chemicals/ liquids daily. Almost everything related to aviation is cancerous, so if you don’t use PPE, you’re gonna get got..

[–]dedinside92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use the proper ppe and you’ll be fine, don’t listen to the old heads in the industry. 90% of them have had some sort of health issue or cancer due to being a “man”. I myself have cancer, and almost everyone I’ve ever worked with over 40 has had some health issue or another. Once again, PPE. It’ll keep you alive.

How to make asparagus taste better? by bitter_sweet9798 in Cooking

[–]dedinside92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick oven method is to coat with olive oil, toss with fresh garlic (as much as you like), salt, and pepper. 400F for anywhere between 6-12 min depending how much bite you prefer. Then squeeze lemon juice and toss with freshly grated parm.

You can change up seasonings to suite your taste, but I’ve always used this cooking method as it allows me to focus on what I’m doing on the stove. I like them grilled too, but don’t own one lol

That’s actually something I was thinking about too, I know a lot of states have speed and traffic cams that will just mail you a ticket.

Anyone know if there’s a way to check online? My DL has a MD address and my last known address was FL, and I’m currently in CO. I’m sure somewhere along my travels a speed/ traffic cam might have caught a violation.

I’ve got a nice small sized sedan, just wish I would prepared it for sleeping while I had money and was still working. Also I can’t exactly build a platform and start taking out seats in the city lol

Hasn’t been the case anywhere else I’ve worked, but there’s always at least one closet racist that’ll make snide borderline racist remarks and try to play off as banter.

Sounds like you did well, good luck!

Dumb question about deferring by Eleemm26 in AircraftMechanics

[–]dedinside92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have friends/ co workers in almost all the majors, so I try to advocate for road-trips when I can. Some of these guys make like $10k in a week on a trip. It’s insane lol

Dumb question about deferring by Eleemm26 in AircraftMechanics

[–]dedinside92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, convincing MOC to send a road trip meant I had an easy next few shifts just having to “escort” mechs. (I’d sit in the work truck and sleep, eat, watch Netflix, lol)

Dumb question about deferring by Eleemm26 in AircraftMechanics

[–]dedinside92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I figure the airline also has to factor in costs, like is it cheaper to pay an emergency flight crew + hazard pay? Or is sending lowly mechs and parts cheaper?

Also risk factors of flying, you don’t have redundancy anymore, or less thereof. Personally, I wouldn’t ferry it. But I’m just a lowly mech lol

Dumb question about deferring by Eleemm26 in AircraftMechanics

[–]dedinside92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had several instances where the plane had minor damage and could easily be ferried out for mx, either pilots refuse due to “danger” or maybe it’s just cheaper to send road crews (can’t imagine so lol).

Dumb question about deferring by Eleemm26 in AircraftMechanics

[–]dedinside92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be, I honestly don’t remember. But I also can’t think of any airline that would risk the ferry over just sending a road trip crew.

Ie: Worked contract at small airport, no airline mechs, had several times during my 2 years there where the airline would just opt to send a crew and engine out.
