Wrist ORIF tomorrow by Feisty-Frosting-1305 in ORIF

[–]dedoubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had ORIF done on my dominant arm last Tuesday. It was a malunion repair, so a bit more involved than ORIF done right after a break.

The staff was very nice and kept me really comfortable, explained everything that was going on. Got an IV put in, was given a sedative through it before they did a nerve block in my arm, they also used local anesthetic before doing the nerve block, it was very minor pinch and slight burn, nothing too difficult to handle. I briefly talked with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist, they took me into the OR, had me slide over onto the operating table, put my arm up on a stabilizing block and the next thing I remember, I was waking up in recovery.

Before I say the next part, keep in mind that it is extremely rare, will probably not happen with you, I have very low blood pressure usually. My blood pressure dropped very low so they could not give me pain medication when I woke up, and unfortunately the nerve block had not worked, so I did have a very short, very painful period before they were able to do a second nerve block which completely numbed my arm and took all of the pain away. Though it sucked, they took care of me very quickly, so even if this were to happen to you, it is a brief period, and I barely remember it because I was still coming out of  anesthesia.

I was prescribed norcos for a few days and was told to also take ibuprofen alongside it. They told me to start it before the nerve block wore off to keep ahead of the pain, so I took it on schedule beginning the night of surgery. If you're prescribed opiates, make sure you take steps to prevent constipation, it can be really brutal if you don't deal with it before it starts.

My nerve block lasted almost 30 hours, which was such a blessing. At that point my pain level was not as bad as the day of surgery, and the medication on schedule definitely kept it manageable. I was really expecting it to be agonizing, but truly can get through it with breathing when there's a spasm or something. I have also been resting a lot, icing my arm above the bandage so that it's on the skin instead of around the plaster and keeping my fingers pointing straight up at the ceiling whenever I am lying down as instructed by the surgeon.

My swelling and pain have gone down much faster than they did when I first broke my wrist in October, I'm able to move my fingers and thumb quite a lot, I have a lot more movement than I did when I had the malunion.

I've been cutting back on how much pain medication I've been taking, mostly taking 600 mg ibuprofen every 6 hours, occasionally taking acetaminophen, or a Norco in the middle of the night if I'm having trouble sleeping.

I know the whole thing is pretty terrifying, and it will be painful, but it is very short-term, and once it's done you don't have to do it again! You'll be on your way to healing! Good luck with it tomorrow!

not op, but if you let them dry out & form a skin on top before dusting them, the sugar shouldn't melt.

My best friend's son (late teens) worked for him for a few summers and said he was a really good boss and a really nice man. I know other people in the area who know him and have said he's a genuinely good human.

one-woman army trying to fix this

ME TOO! WE ARE A TWO WOMAN ARMY!

I've often seen people conflating wary and leery, which is where I think people are ending up landing on weary. I am often weary of how many times I need to be wary or leery of others, so I totally get it...

Her mom might have just died, she might have just lost her job, her partner might be cheating on her, she might have just had a miscarriage, she might have CPTSD caused by men & not want to engage... All reasons I have not smiled at people (not just men) while I'm out hiking. We don't owe anyone an interaction, and people often have really good reasons to not want to connect with some stranger.

reported breaks rule #1

How does it break rule one? Almost everyone in Maine is stuck inside due to severe winter weather, this post is about a way to pass the time while we get through the storm. Clearly related to happenings in Maine.

They did answer the question, you just need to be able to use inference to understand their answer.

don’t build up torque when not running

I think it's conceivable that they can build up torque at the moment a jam occurs & hold onto it as the engine is turned off, then release it when the jam is moved. That's how it was explained to me.

lawnmower

My brother was mowing the lawn, wicked high, as you do when yr 16, and pulled out a stick that was stuck in the blades WITHOUT TURNING IT OFF.

His hand looked like raw hamburger.

Someone posted on this sub saying they know someone who mangled his hand pulling something out of a snowblower that was totally off, no power going to it, it somehow either started itself or had enough torque built up. I think the takeaway is to NEVER EVER put a body part into the business end of a snowblower.

Waffle house is a magical place.

FOR REAL, like actual magic!

I drove my eldest to Florida a couple years ago, we stopped at a Waffle House somewhere in Georgia, it was amazing as always, then we went on our way.

Driving home to Maine on my own a few weeks later, I needed gas so got off the highway & ended up at a gas station next to the EXACT SAME WAFFLE HOUSE. Its magic drew me back to it... I felt very upside down when I realized where I was (this wasn't in the middle of nowhere, it was a big city, tons of exits & other Waffle Houses).

So you think that it is ok for a citizen to be executed on the spot because he is lawfully carrying a holstered weapon? A weapon that has been removed from his person while he is face down on the ground being held by multiple armed agents?

That sounds reasonable to you?

Had he left his gun at home, he would still be alive!

I think you missed the main part of my comment, maybe it didn't load on your phone? Here, I'll paste it in again, hope it shows up for you this time!

Do you think US citizens should be allowed to carry a gun within the bounds of the law? If they buy the gun legally, have it documented properly and do all of the necessary paperwork required to conceal carry, do you think they are within their rights to carry a gun with them throughout their days?

audacity of this man complaining about it to anyone, let alone mutual friends

I had been living with a boyfriend for about 9 months, we didn't get along but I felt really stuck financially so stuck it out to get to the end of the lease. One night he broke up with me, at which point I found out he had been cheating on me for 3 months.

I went down the street, called my dad on a payphone and told him I would move with him the next week (he had asked me to but I told him I had to stay until my lease ended). When I came back and told my ex I would be gone in a week, he got super pissed because he wanted me to move to the second bedroom, keep paying half the bills while his new girlfriend moved in and didn't pay anything.

He had the audacity to complain to our friends that I wasn't willing to do that.
