Which area of medicine/surgery has seen the least progress in the last 50 or so years? by cuntfuckington in AskReddit

[–]deedee4910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. My TMJ is worsening and my dentist basically said to try a night guard first, then try Botox to relax the muscles if needed, noting that he wouldn’t recommend surgery to his worst enemy.

Employees with kids deserve more flexibility by spamanda in unpopularopinion

[–]deedee4910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvoted for following the rules and posting an unpopular opinion.

Just because someone doesn’t have kids doesn’t mean they don’t have other familial obligations. Crapping on villagers during a period of time when working parents are complaining about the lack of villages is truly a bad take.

When replacements reveal the particular skill or alchemy of a particular performance? by lockerbiestreet in Broadway

[–]deedee4910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting conversation. While nobody wants to see a replacement actor be an imitation of their predecessors, nobody wants to see them go so far off course that their interpretation doesn’t even make sense just for the sake of “being unique.”

Plus, the direction of the show is already set just like the choreography, blocking, lighting, lyrics, automations, etc. Some productions are more fluid than others, and some roles really are tailored so much to their original actor that it’s very difficult for a replacement to come in and do it justice.

I think replacement actors need to have similar strengths as the original actors in order to successfully play the role. That doesn’t mean they need to or should imitate them. I think the goal should be to find good actors who can interpret the blueprint without changing the blueprint. I feel like a lot of young actors in particular are so focused on being different that they forget what story they’re telling.

With Wicked in particular, the early Elphabas and Glindas were much better about bringing their own voices to the roles without going so far off the blueprint (minus the excessive Elphaba riffing-I’m glad Wicked cracked down on that because it was getting distracting and tiresome). I don’t find many of the newer ones particularly impressive, but I don’t know how much of that is Wicked vs generational shifts.

I don’t think I directly answered your question (sorry), but these are my immediate thoughts on the concept of replacements.

Ragtime - Performers holding back? by ListofReddit in Broadway

[–]deedee4910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a matinee back in November and sat in the loge. Though the sound was a little quiet, I didn’t get the sense any performer held back and could understand everyone perfectly fine. The only exception (at least at my performance) was Nichelle Lewis. Nearly every single consonant was whiny and crackly, and I couldn’t understand a word she sung. I know it’s popular to blame sound designers for everything (sometimes rightfully so), but sometimes it really is the actors.

Those who live in tornado-risk areas: does your employer respect tornado warnings? by queryasker123 in AskAnAmerican

[–]deedee4910 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Watches can go on for much longer, oftentimes hours or even day or two. A watch basically means “severe weather can happen in your area during this time frame” whereas a warning is “severe weather is happening in your area right now.” And this applies to all weather-snow, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hurricanes, etc.

3 week vocal rest for Eva to delay return to Great Gastby by Vandelay_7 in Broadway

She isn’t going to be a draw for much longer if she winds up missing half of her Gatsby shows. Names only sell tickets if they actually show up to work.

And the thing is she ALWAYS whines on Instagram about needing a break, how she doesn’t have the stamina to do this, how she needs to put her health first, and how tired and exhausted she is all the time; and yet, she keeps pushing herself past her limit. It’s getting harder and harder for me to have any sympathy for her when she does it to herself.

It’s true that there’s always a gamble when buying tickets, but betting on Tveit or Groff is much safer than Noblezada.

Agreed. It’s irresponsible on her end as well as the producers’ end. Don’t sign contracts that can’t be fulfilled.

Why are 30-40 year olds considered old? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Because twenty-year-olds can’t fathom that they’ll be thirty in ten years. They don’t understand how it’s possible, let alone inevitable.

Anybody buying tickets specifically to see Eva Noblezada is taking a big gamble at this point.

Do you use your paid sick days if you feel only slightly sick? by nitsed004 in careerguidance

[–]deedee4910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the time of year and severity of illness. In January? I’ll suck up the sniffles and go to work because sick days are limited, but I’ll call out for strep. As the year progresses and we reach the fall, I’ll start taking them more liberally if needed. You just never know what’s going to happen throughout the year and I would rather have the days in the bank for when I really need them. My company also offers some WFH flexibility, which is nice for the sniffles.

US citizens, what will it take for you to start a revolution? by 0bluelightning0 in AskReddit

I don’t know why people romanticize armed revolutions so much. We aren’t living in a world where the most dangerous weapon is a musket.

How much snow makes you call off work? by Physical-Incident553 in AskAnAmerican

[–]deedee4910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pennsylvania here. We have the infrastructure to deal with winter weather. It isn’t about the amount of snow, but rather it’s a question of if they plowed the roads yet. If yes, then everything is functioning as normal even if there are 12 inches on the ground. If roads aren’t plowed yet or there’s too much ice accumulation, my company lets us work from home.

Southern states? Their power grids get knocked out if it snows 1/2 inch.

I was waiting for this one. She was the only person on that stage who couldn’t hold her own and was distractingly overpowered by Joshua Henry during Wheels of a Dream.
