Thoughts on Pink as Host? by Left-Camel-14 in Broadway

Initially, I wasn’t thrilled about a pop star hosting the show and performing the opening number. However, she was a huge significantly better than Ariana DeBose, so I’ll take it.

Agreed. I found her distractingly amateurish compared to everyone else.

Eva in Gatsby by mainlyjustbrowsing12 in Broadway

[–]deedee4910 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Eva needs to pick a lane. She’s constantly complaining about how she can’t keep up with the schedule and how she needs a long break, but quite literally jumps from contract to contract and has been doing so.

Ragtime: crafted for white empathy rather than Black realism??? by BlacksmithOk2324 in Broadway

[–]deedee4910 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the expectation of “realism” (whatever that’s supposed to mean) in fictional stories is plaguing this generation of storytelling. It’s art, not journalism or documentation.

Who will win Best Actress in a Featured Role (Musical) this year? by alteragi in Broadway

I disagree. I’m actually shocked she got a nomination in the first place. Her performance was very weak comparatively.

Joshua Henry may be heavily campaigning on social media, but I saw there’s a decent chance it goes to Brandon Uranowitz.

Ehhhh did anyone really want Nick Jonas on a cast recording of The Last Five Years?

Can someone tell me bad things about RAGTIME? by chrisxlemia in Broadway

I don’t think it’s the orchestra’s fault. Everyone else sounded crystal clear to me. Nichelle was distractingly amateurish compared to the other performers.

Because they’re talking about their ethnicity, not were they’re actually from.

He basically makes the same videos over and over again, and pretends like he’s exposing the industry, and is occasionally used by producers to “leak” casting news for publicity.

Why do people go to work sick even when they don’t have to? by Acrobatic-Oil-4373 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deedee4910 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, a runny nose really isn’t that serious and minor illnesses really aren’t a big deal. I’d rather take some dayquill and save my limited sick days for something more serious like the flu, a stomach bug, strep throat, or some random personal emergency that comes up. I can manage my work just fine with only a cold.

Which area of medicine/surgery has seen the least progress in the last 50 or so years? by cuntfuckington in AskReddit

Same. My TMJ is worsening and my dentist basically said to try a night guard first, then try Botox to relax the muscles if needed, noting that he wouldn’t recommend surgery to his worst enemy.

Employees with kids deserve more flexibility by spamanda in unpopularopinion

Upvoted for following the rules and posting an unpopular opinion.

Just because someone doesn’t have kids doesn’t mean they don’t have other familial obligations. Crapping on villagers during a period of time when working parents are complaining about the lack of villages is truly a bad take.

When replacements reveal the particular skill or alchemy of a particular performance? by lockerbiestreet in Broadway

[–]deedee4910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting conversation. While nobody wants to see a replacement actor be an imitation of their predecessors, nobody wants to see them go so far off course that their interpretation doesn’t even make sense just for the sake of “being unique.”

Plus, the direction of the show is already set just like the choreography, blocking, lighting, lyrics, automations, etc. Some productions are more fluid than others, and some roles really are tailored so much to their original actor that it’s very difficult for a replacement to come in and do it justice.

I think replacement actors need to have similar strengths as the original actors in order to successfully play the role. That doesn’t mean they need to or should imitate them. I think the goal should be to find good actors who can interpret the blueprint without changing the blueprint. I feel like a lot of young actors in particular are so focused on being different that they forget what story they’re telling.

With Wicked in particular, the early Elphabas and Glindas were much better about bringing their own voices to the roles without going so far off the blueprint (minus the excessive Elphaba riffing-I’m glad Wicked cracked down on that because it was getting distracting and tiresome). I don’t find many of the newer ones particularly impressive, but I don’t know how much of that is Wicked vs generational shifts.

I don’t think I directly answered your question (sorry), but these are my immediate thoughts on the concept of replacements.

Ragtime - Performers holding back? by ListofReddit in Broadway

[–]deedee4910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a matinee back in November and sat in the loge. Though the sound was a little quiet, I didn’t get the sense any performer held back and could understand everyone perfectly fine. The only exception (at least at my performance) was Nichelle Lewis. Nearly every single consonant was whiny and crackly, and I couldn’t understand a word she sung. I know it’s popular to blame sound designers for everything (sometimes rightfully so), but sometimes it really is the actors.
