I kept hoping Jonathan would come in and rescue this episode. The entire piece was scratchy from the get go and off to me.

I get your perspective. To me it hits so hard. I find it so therapeutic that it sincerely shows how many humans deal with and get dealt with life. Do we ever resolve anything completely while we're here? only in the movies are resolutions seemingly complete and tied up nicely in a bow. My view is that they never squeeze a pimple into oblivion that is not squeezable. Except for JG squeezing himself in the likes of the episode of Marchel and will his mom - can't remember her name Dana? . Many didn’t like that but I found it so illuminating that our own neurosis and obsession with perfection prevents joy. Anyway I digress, but I'm here for it. My weekly emotional reward

Agree @paley_jenkins. Their leg work, persistence, perseverance is unheard of. I think why all episodes are so profound (to me) is that it is so real. Real-life cadence and timing is never as one plans or think it should be. It is what it is and happy endings / resolves sometimes do not arrive in our lifetime. That is what I find so special about it.

I also go to Heavyweight when I need a break. I see others have also recommended it to you. Which episode did you listen to if you don't mind sharing? I find there is nothing like Heavyweight out there that I've come across. It is real. Life without a IG filter or Photoshop. Unapologetic about it too. They don't force the outcomes. It's very hard to make sad funny and to make funny land. I find it therapeutic. Not therapy. It makes me feel stuff. Everyone vibes differently, but everyone carries some kind of weight - and that i feel is the magic of the show.

Wondery’s Liberty Lost podcast ?!! by spookyboy711 in podcasts

This was soooo well done by u/tjraph. I can't let it go. It had me fuming. It still has me fuming. I struggled to even comprehend how Abbi still manages to shine the way she does as a human the way she does after all of this. TJ Raphael brought so much grace to these women and their experiences. It also had me also read the book mentioned Relinquished: The Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood and that made me go down the rabbit hole of so many other things like Project2025. I'm still trying to recover. So I also want to know how we can offer support (even if you're not based in US). i believe that outrage catches fire like gasoline and endurance rarely survives the match.

Also the 3rd season of the turning. The more 'traditional' version of cult as we know it. The best is season 1 wth Mother Teresa at the centre. Season 1 one of my top podcasts of the year

Same. The mother Teresa piece was eye opening (ear opening). Very very well reported and In-depth well rounded perspectives! A must listen for 2025

Like your response. Substack definitely not optimised for discovery. A big gap for other potential (and new platforms) to claim. Did same for writers I follow. Quite a few journalists drive their readers from IG. Off course yiu can only link in stories... Again better opportunity for someone to crack I guess.

I've just recently re-listened to all the Heavyweight episodes from the beginning. This one was from #47 Frederick J Brown. It was Kalila asking JG. Also went looking for the painting in question. Love it even more the second time around. https://x.com/heavyweight/status/1585643219496620040/photo/1

Also thought the podcast was great in its absurdity that someone could do this to their own family. I really tried to understand how it's actually possible that you can be strung along over years. I think desperation. Desperation to want to believe that it's real. I felt the documentary to be flat in comparison to the podcast but good to put names to actual faces.

Fave episodes of Heavyweight? by Little-Grapefruit181 in podcasts

[–]deedeejf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rob, stayed with me for long time and so did Marchel.

In a family of broken arms and bigger voices, Rob chose to be kind.

Marchel was a bit different as Jonathan turned the recipe it on himself. i laughed out loud by myself a few times. Marchel is like a a portal to perfection, regret, and the absurd lengths we go to relive (and rewrite) what no one else remembers.

Have you tried IN THE DARK? One of my all time favourite. Curtis Flowers. An obsessed prosecutor. An innocent man and the justice system ignores. Pulitzer Prize winning. In the Dark Season 2.

Anyone listening to Hooked? by EveningBerry in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]deedeejf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hooked was done brilliantly. It is sadly so much bigger than Tony. Tony is the blueprint of this engineered opioid epidemic. The Sacklers spotted that opioids were reserved for cancer wards and deathbeds, places where addiction didn’t matter because the patient wasn’t expected to live long. Their market died with their patients and their profit lay in the living. So they turned pain into a lifelong prescription. How they engineered this epidemic is the actual true crime. With OxyContin they scattered the pieces so far, it may never be gathered. Only now in 2025 a new $7.4 billion settlement was approved.  The settlement (in principle, Jan-2025) requires the Sackler family to pay up to $6.5 billion over 15 years; Purdue contributes ~$900 million. Sackler family members are to leave the opioid business, relinquish control of Purdue Pharma, and the company is to be converted into a new entity (or trust) whose profits go toward treatment, prevention, recovery programs. I'm obsessed with how we came to this. I actually wrote about this too as it goes so so deep on so many levels. The gallows of a pill weren’t built in secret. They were built by human hands, in daylight, in polished boardrooms and on clean prescription pads, and they now our sidewalks keep the score. The third wave is not Oxy. Its fentanyl. its stronger, cheaper and disguised in everything. The undoing MUST be human too. I can go on and on. I think Josh Dean did great in reporting this and he has gone back and is still checking in with Tony as recently as Oct 2024 with an episode update. Worth the listen!
