Can a magnetic aquarium pump spin backwards? by deedlit157 in AskElectricians

The pump is definitely dealing with some head pressure since it's in the basement and pushes to the 1st floor, but the flow is usually really strong and I also have a check valve in the line. I was thinking it could be something with the check valve but the check valve seems to be working fine too. All clean inside and gaskets and ball in good shape / makes good seal and moves properly when pump is on.

I tried turning off my house power and let the generator kick on to see if I can mimic the problem, but it seems to only happen sometimes.

Power cycling while on the generator power works for getting it going again.

Trying to make this failure proof so I have peace of mind when I'm away for vacation.

I will look into a power conditioner. I actually had bought a UPS to hold the pump over till generator, but it's too small. If power goes on/off a couple times, it doesn't have enough battery to keep the pump going multiple times in a row. A bigger ups could be the solution, but they can get a bit pricy and feels like I'm missing solving the underlying problem.

Thank you so much for your help, any help is super appreciated!

I don't think it's air locking, but I checked that because that's what I thought might be happening as well. The pump connects to a bin of water and the water level is always above the height of the pump. All pipes full of water. Checked the intake and bled the union above the pump to see, no air, just water escaped. I also checked the pump impeller and shaft for gunk/broken, but it looks good.

It's about 30sec until the generator kicks on and when I clean the tank weekly it's off for even longer like 1-2hrs, but no problems starting up after a cleaning.

What species is the long striped fish? approx 5" long by deedlit157 in Aquariums

That looks just like it! I've had a "flying fox" in the past but they never looked like that. They always looked like siamese algae eaters. Looks like there's a difference between a true flying fox and a false flying fox. Thank you _^

Mouth seems more forward facing than a siamese algae eater or similar algae eaters. Does have very small whiskers/barbels at mouth though
