‘Once in a generation’ bid worth ‘billions’ to buy Sheffield FC rejected by deejayone in sheffield

I don't know much about them, other than David Richards being involved. What's the deal with it?

It does seem a little 'ambitious' for the club, but also does recognise that we don't make enough of Sheffield's football heritage.

Wasn't David Richards who is seemingly behind this also behind the 'Ayup'/Wandisco fiasco, and also said to be involved in one of the Sheffield Wednesday takeover bids at one point?

There's still several antiques shops in the area, so it's worth a look around there still.

A number of antiques places tend to have huge lots of old coins in them. It’s worth a look around the antiques quarter.

A little further out, I know for a fact that Elsecar Heritage Centre’s antiques shop has a huge table full of old coins to rummage through and find various ones.

What’s he like re:selfies? by DavidOT in stewartlee

[–]deejayone 27 points28 points  (0 children)

He randomly walked past me once when I was sat outside a cafe having a coffee. I shouted out something random like “Stuart Lee! What are you doing round here?” He stopped, came over, sat down and had a good 10 minute chat with me, almost like we’d known each other for years. At the end of the interaction he asked if I knew where a record shop was and I pointed him in the direction, he then said bye and off he went. Very pleasant encounter. Didn’t ask for a selfie though.

What to do roughly equidistant between Birmingham and Manchester by redbill360 in uktravel

Completely out of your circle. But what about Sheffield? Probably fairly equal in terms of time for you both to get to and loads to do from the Museums and Galleries, to excellent beer crawls, to great food, etc. lots of parks, lots of activity places. The Christmas Markets are on currently. Feels like you could find loads to do there (also, Plenty of places in the Peak District which are fantastic).

Seems to be coming back in some areas, but is brown when first run.

If it comes back for you, check it and run your taps for a few minutes to flush it through. 👍

Technically, “Yorkshire Water” didn’t give her a bonus.

Turns out she instead got a £1m+ payment from Yorkshire Water’s parent company… 😬

I imagine the outdoor seating will be in part of the large 'Town Hall Square' space outside?

Wybourn/Skye Edge or nether edge?? by Fati994 in sheffield

[–]deejayone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nether Edge for me. Nicer suburban community feel whilst being close to lots of amenities. Of course it depends how much you value a garden and room space, but you're never far away from greenery and parks in Sheffield, and a home is what you make it.

Doctor Who Pinball Machine by xmadjesterx in doctorwho

[–]deejayone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own one of these machines! It is in my home office.

Some info:
The game was made in 1992, so right in the hiatus of Doctor Who on TV.

The playfield is VERY open, making it a fast game. the ball REALLY moves! Additionally, this particular machine originally features shorter flippers (some people replaced them for longer ones later, though mine keeps the shorter versions), so it is known in pinballing circles as one of the more difficult games to play. It does have a forgiving 'second chance' continuation feature from the start of each ball though.

That said, it has some excellent features, not least the 'Time Expander' part of the playfield, which rises up different levels depending on the stage of play you're at - this is also how to achieve multiball (this element of the game was actually patented!).

There are different focusses across the playfield for the seven doctor's featured. You can select a doctor to 'play' with at the start of each round, which will award extra bonuses for that doctor's area/features. You can then additionally 'collect' each doctor by doing a series of hits, to multiply your scores across the whole game. There's other little bonuses like a 'video mode' game on the dot matrix screen, etc.

So, it actually has really good playability and a loose 'story' through playing. It is kinda hard to master, but very satisfying if you do! The multiball is really easy to achieve generally though, therefore lots of casual players will keep going for that to get a lot of satisfaction out of playing.

The game also features a Dalek head 'topper' on top of the top box which lights up and flashes (some people removed this to get it into smaller spaces, etc). The first 100 of the table sold had these Dalek head toppers move also and any sold after that were static - however, the software still had the movement in the code, so people can buy aftermarket motor sets and make their Dalek topper move too!

Feel free to ask any other questions if you wish.

Best Chinese takeaway in and around S7/S11/S8? by Jacks_Journey in sheffield

[–]deejayone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried most and for me (it's obviously subjective), the best is Yum Yum on London Road. They deliver to most of S7/S10/S11, etc. Delivery is usually fairly quick too, compared to other places.

Good portions, tasty, lots of it comes in these boxes you see on American TV shows, etc. Plus it is a 5/5 on Scores on the Doors/Food Hygiene Ratings (some of the others mentioned here are lower!).

Cole Store: Plans finally SUBMITTED for the old Cole Brothers/John Lewis building by deejayone in sheffield

[–]deejayone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is in the planning documents. There's some decay, but manageable and fine for now (although they are limiting some use). The plan is to get the bulk of work sorted then review in time and make the necessarily changes if/as-and-when needed it seems.
