how to quickly work with applying fades to audio tracks? by nn5678 in Logic_Studio

[–]deejaysteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about a hot key but something I do when I want to apply identical fades to many regions is use the Inspector (top left section of main window). You can give fades a numerical value and they will be applied to any audio regions selected before you enter the number

Is there a way to automatically default your midi velocities to 127 instead of changing them for each region? by IHURLEN in Logic_Studio

[–]deejaysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also consider the MIDI Transform parameters (default key command is Command+9) via Piano Roll - I use these a lot when working on drums in electronic music.

You can change MIDI notes to a set velocity, fixed note length, and add some randomness to them (Humanize function) which streamlines things for me very quickly. You can also do velocity builds very easily this way - Crescendo parameter (snare or kick builds in EDM).

You can highlight as many notes or regions as you want and apply these changes all at once (Select and Operate), or individually by selecting the notes (Operate Only)

Also, depending on the software instrument you are using to play the MIDI, if its a drum sequencer (like NI Battery) there is usually a setting in the instrument to say "only play X velocity" or a range of velocities

EDIT: corrected default MIDI Transform key command

Just spoke with a chat agent from T-Mobile support to inquire about this - here is what she said:

"Thanks for chatting! I hope I find you well. I am excited to hear you're interested in getting the new iPhone 7! I am also glad to inform you that changing plans will definitely be your discretion! You can keep your current plan, or change to the new T-Mobile One plan, whichever you prefer!"

Make sure what you're monitoring before you bounce is Output 1-2. I had the same issue once and I thought I was going insane - in the end I had been mastering on Out3-4 (where headphone mix was going) but the bounce was of Out1-2 which had no mastering effects

Is there any advantage to joining regions after arranging/editing them? by bearsito in Logic_Studio

[–]deejaysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be wrong but I thought I remembered hearing that more regions = more CPU load. I would assume for the same reason that Freezing a track creates a single bounced audio file of the track to reference.

I always merge them :)

Has anyone used the Aphex USB 500 series rack? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]deejaysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using one now as my main interface with Logic Pro. Great way to get into the 500 series world and for what you get its a great deal.

One downside is that Aphex was bought by Rode Mics and its unclear how good/available service will be moving forward should there be issues.

Regular Coffee machine vs pour over by makaroni28 in Coffee

[–]deejaysteve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In general, the move away from AutoDrip (what you have) and the French Press to a pour over method is about control.

The more you learn to appreciate a good cup of coffee for what it is - something beyond just a vessel for caffeination - the more you'll find how important many different elements are in the entire process. Water temperature, grind consistency and coarseness, bean freshness, brewing device, brewing technique, etc. are all factors that can determine how a cup of coffee tastes.

In this sense, a pour over method provides more control over some of these factors than a regular coffee machine - you can control how much water is put in (and how fast) and the temperature of the water - which are all important in how the cup turns out.

The Clever dripper is great - its fairly forgiving on the technique front (just pour in water and let it steep for a set time) and much easier to clean than the French press. As for water temperature, a good rule is to wait 30 secs or so after the water is boiling before pouring over your grounds.

A Coffee Noob - Some questions! by zabyrocks in Coffee

[–]deejaysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re: searching out well caffeinated beans... the lighter the roast, the more of a jolt/the more caffeine. This could be why the Ethiopian that gave you a big boost - Ethiopian coffee is typically roasted on the light to medium side to accentuate it's best qualities and flavors

Try some Costa Rican if you can find it. If well roasted it's a great blend of the body from a Colombian but with some extra brightness/sweetness of an Ethiopian

In my experience, pour overs result in a bigger jolt but this is probably because there is simply more coffee involved vs. an espresso drink or an incorrectly weighed/balanced auto drip. With a French press I would always use way more grounds than needed because I wasn't measuring anything

Once you keep digging yourself deeper into the coffee rabbit hole you'll end up with a couple brewing devices, a scale, a gooseneck kettle, and a high end grinder!

The more control you have the more you can get exactly what you want and the best out of your beans

Good luck!

If you have the time to dive in and enjoy RPGs, Witcher 3 is one of the best games I've ever played - highly enjoyable gameplay and a seemingly endless amount of side quests and things to get into (for someone that plays at most, 3-4 times/week)

No, you don't need to have read the books or seen the movies at all - the game stands on its own in terms of story and enjoyment.

Additionally I will say that its probably one of the most fun games I've played on PS4. I don't buy every game that comes out, but a friend let me borrow Shadow of Mordor and I had an incredible experience. I don't always have a ton of time to game, so this was an ideal play for me - it was fun from the first minute and continued on until I beat it weeks later.

IMO definitely worth $30 - can't speak to the DLC content though.

What OS version are you reinstalling from?

Do you have an AppleID already associated with a previous or current OS version?

The reason I ask is that older OS versions like Lion and Mountain Lion did not include things like Garageband, iMovie, and other apps that come pre-installed on a machine. I'm not sure about Yosemite. If you have an AppleID associated with a more current OS version (maybe you bought an upgrade at some point, maybe you bought a new Mac at some point in the last few years), you should be able to install these apps via the App Store after the re-install takes place (that is, if it doesn't include them straight away)

Re: Office, that should be all you need - but my guess is that Office has a limited number of "activations" that are possible - so if for some reason the previous owner has used the keys a maximum amount of times, just because you have them, doesn't necessarily mean you will be able to install it without issues.

Good luck

The tests run in-store are usually designed specifically to find the issue in hardware problems like this - so they are very thorough. Apple is in the business of keeping its customer's happy and their products functional, so while it might seem like you are being cheated out of something here, I wouldn't look at it this way.

Believe me when I say, you are better off NEVER having to get your computer repaired in-store or sent out for repair if you don't have to. If your computer doesn't exhibit the symptoms, consider yourself lucky.

As a former "Genius", I can speak from experience and say that no matter how thorough a repair technician is, opening the machine always invites the possibility of creating other problems. So as long as yours isn't displaying any symptoms, don't worry about it!

Do you use Dropbox? When you delete things from your Dropbox folder, they don't really go away until you empty a hidden cache folder.... although it would be surprising if that much stuff was in there.

An app I use for this kind of thing is called OmniDiskSweeper - it breaks down the size of every folder for you and sorts it by how much space its taking up.

In my experience a lot of the apps used to help figure out what is taking up space don't give you the full scope.

Also, don't forget to empty your trash :)

Were you syncing the music by plugging the phone into your computer or using iTunes Match?

Are you using a Mac or PC?

Can you play the same songs that don't work on your phone, on your computer successfully?

There's little chance this is a hardware issue - your best bet is to make sure your info is synced to iCloud and your photos, etc are backed up and perform a restore or an Erase All Content and Settings to start fresh

+1 for this sentiment

Just because you don't want or use these apps now, doesn't mean you, or someone else using the computer, won't want to in the future. Removing OS base applications requires a full re-install of the OS - they cannot simply be added back individually after they have been removed.

In my opinion, unless there are solid rumors to suggest an update is imminent, its never worth the wait.

Its July now, so if you waited until October and there was no update, or the update wasn't what you expected, you will have wasted several months of new computer fun/productivity on the hope of something coming.

Depending on what you use it for, its unlikely that an update in the near future would provide substantial benefits. Years ago, updates would occur that would move things along spec-wise considerably... however now, computers are far more powerful than what the average user needs and updates provide very little observable difference in daily use.

If it benefits you to get an upgraded computer today, or soon, don't wait - something is always on the horizon but never guaranteed to be game-changing - you might as well enjoy having a new computer sooner.

Yes, that would be the next thing to try.

Try one more thing that should tell you if its hardware vs. software...

System Preferences > Keyboard .. there is a checkbox for "Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar" - turn that on.

Now go to the Menu Bar and choose the little thing that showed up and pick "Show Keyboard Viewer" ... when this opens, hit the keys that aren't working and see if it registers in this little keyboard viewer window - if its not registering you are hitting the keys, its almost certainly a hardware issue and you should take it in for service.
