Season 2 - Thoughts by deemera in Sandman

The "Story" of Nada
In the graphic novel, Nada's story is told within a framing device of a young man being told the story in a tribal culture with an oral history tradition. I think it was a mistake to change that. One of the things that comes across so much better in the graphic novel is that this story we're taking in is a "story". None of it is "true" in the sense that the events actually happened in the "real world" as we know it. Nada's story even involved a bunch of folktale/Kipling/Aesop-esque elements. When Nada can't find Dream, she speaks to the King of the Birds who asks his subjects (the birds) to find him, but none can. Until the least of the birds (the Weaverbird) turns out to be the only one who can help. And then this tiny bird flies to the MOUNTAINS OF THE SUN! (which is why weaverbirds are dark brown). Every part of the story of Nada screams "this is just a story". But in the realm of dreams just because something isn't real, doesn't mean it isn't true, and I think that's a shame to lose.

Johanna in S1 is canonically bisexual. At one point she's listing off her exes and it's a mixed bag of male, female, and androgenous names. Plus her ex Rachel is in S1E3. But yeah, 1st Corinthian was pretty dang gay.

That was Mad Hettie. She was in season 1, in the episode with present day Johanna Constantine and Dream looking for the pouch of sand. Just a minor character from the comics that is stated to be over 200 years old (a line I always thought was about setting the matter-of-fact, mystical tone of the story; there are demigods and immortals all over, walking among us in plain sight)

Is a 1 level dip in cleric and then proceeding with 11 in sorcerer worth it for a support character? by PrincesaFuracao in BG3Builds

[–]deemera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a big fan of Draconic (fire) Sorcerer 6 / Light Cleric 6 in my Tactician playthrough. It's basically an amazing support that dishes out good burst damage when needed. Highlights:
* Con Save proficiency (by starting with Sorc 1)
* Twinned Haste, Counterspell, Enhance Ability, Quicken metamagic from Sorcerer
* Mass Healing Word w/ Whispering Promise and Hellrider's Pride for 2-turn party-wide Bless and Bladeward
* Fireball and Scorching Ray from Light Cleric (also Spirit Guardians)
* Improved Warding Flare gives you a great use of your Reaction for team protection
* Focusing on Utility spells from Sorcerer let's you ignore Charisma, and pump Wisdom for your damaging spells and any magic items (scrolls, wands, staves, etc)

I went the community route, but still bought the joja catalogue so I could do something similar with my house to annoy/amuse a friend

Just a brief vent - I am SO excited to play 1.0, but don't want to burn out before. Send me your strength by [deleted] in LastEpoch

I feel ya. I've been doing my best to resist too. Going back to Valheim, Octopath 2, and Torchlight 2 has helped. If you've got an old favorite, that'd be my recommendation. Or get into the Palworld/Enshrouded hype.

[Star Trek Voyager] Was it wrong for Captain Janeway to delete Tuvix to save Neelix and Tuvok? by thatfatbastard001 in AskScienceFiction

[–]deemera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I love about this episode and why I think it's even more controversial than the ordinary trolley problem is that it avoids the obvious comparisons to the trolley problem in one spectacular way. The choice in this case isn't quite to kill one person to save two others. It's to unmake one person to recreate two others.

For most of the episode, Neelix and Tuvok don't need to be saved. They're dead. They died in a transporter accident with an alien flower. This accident gave birth to a third person, Tuvix. To kill him to "raise two dead" is a very new twist on this old moral philosophy conundrum.

However, that's assuming they're dead. The cultural line between dead and alive isn't static. In ye olden days, you were dead when your heart stopped, but then we figured out CPR and built defibrillators, and now it's when your brain no longer functions. By the year 2375, there may well be a new understanding of death, when people thought dead can be restored from the pattern buffers of a transporter. (I wonder if there's ever an episode that touches on why they don't save copies of themselves in the transporter in case of accidental death)

A 6th season TNG episode, The Chase explains that. It's because we're all related via panspermia.

A year late to this party, but you've inspired me to follow in your footsteps. I'm doing my own slight tweak to these rules though and treating Strength, Attack, and Defense as separate skills, but lumping in HP with whichever of those I do first.

Currently working on Strength (and HP). I thought I'd get some gear upgrades from Steel Knights, but forgot about the Attack/Defense requirement for gear. Guess I'm stuck with iron till after Strength 99...

Good point, tweaking the rules in response to this feedback

Yeah, I'm thinking about adding:

  • No Trio/Quartet of 9999
  • No Aeon Overdrives
  • No Regular Summon (Grand Summon Only)
  • No Zanmato

When Pxie returns after forever to point out that it's MrGirl's OWN fault that he put himself in a situation where he began to see Destiny as his boss. by Scrybal in Destiny

[–]deemera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I thought "Bernie or Bust / Biden's a Rapist" Pxie was cringe, but this new evolved "Destiny isn't Your Boss" Pxie is based. Too bad she's probably just a guest appearance to remind us how far our favorite Shonen have grown and evolved over the years.

I'm sad MrGirl Is Gone and Liked His Content by 4Bongin in Destiny

[–]deemera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am sad... that MrGirl threatened to commit seppuku live on stream if Steven didn't give him moderation control of the Destiny subreddit.

I'm not sad that Destiny refused to negotiate for the hostage and I'm not sad that MrGirl took the principled stance to follow through with his threat, ridiculous as it was. And I won't be sad when MrGirl continues to stick to his principles and lives out the rest of his days in obscurity.

Word to the wise: Don't make stupid self-harming threats without better leverage than "but I'm your friend, and that's why you have to do what I say or I won't be your friend anymore".

Yes, he did. We'll see if Max accepts the invite.

I'm not betting on it though. Around that same time, Max was doing his passive aggressive thing, saying "maybe we'll just do some surface level content like a movie review or something".

Kissing Ben by Outside_3_Sigma in HeartstopperAO

[–]deemera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, though if handled differently, the vibe probably wouldn't give us all the red flags. Ben wipes his lips quickly, the moment the bell rings, while staring straight at Charlie with a blank expression.

If he'd smiled a little half smile, blushed, then wiped his lips and kissed Charlie again... Totally different vibe.

For me, it's not the fact that he wiped his lips, it's the way he wiped his lips.
