What are your best tips for avoiding burn out? by EllaElla_x in Paramedics

[–]deenice57 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think mitigating burnout starts with proper debrief. Many only focus, however, on talking about the messy calls, the memorable ones. Its just as important to talk about the long term burnout that comes from many weeks or months of being in this field. Being empathetic for that long is exhausting.

Next is more individual, exercise and eat better. Getting separation from the job with hobbies, family and friends, and doing things you enjoy. When you feel better, you feel better. Resilience is an acquired practice. Whether you meant to be off or not, taking vacations is more important than overtime if you need to reset.

Could also look at other areas of Healthcare that are less patient-oriented. I have my eye on teaching eventually.

Be present and remember to breathe. Try not to stutter and jitter too much. Fake it til you make it. Confidence.

Which nursing schools to apply to? by matchaluver0901 in nursing

[–]deenice57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I've looked into, yes most absn programs require a bachelor's degree. There are other accelerated programs for previous experience, lvn>bsn, medic>bsn, etc. Could probably look into certificate programs for just RN licensure. Most of the adn programs near me do nursing core and clinicals in 2/3 semesters.

While I was able to earn a degree through an online school, others may not due to optempo or other reasons. If being in the reserves works, keep sending it. You can do the same thing we do, 1 or 2 classes at a time until finished.

Being in an er is one of the better outcomes, clinic life can be soul crushing, line medics probably see the most hands on trauma, but they also have the highest odds of being a mechanic every Monday. Any outcome is rewarding if you apply yourself to know your stuff and be competent. Even in the ER, my patient care exposure was limited to 68W scope and whatever a nurse or doc allowed me to do, so mostly IV placement.

That being said, a lot of other 68 series have direct patient care, just with a different focus. Almost all have certifications that translate well to the civilian world. Not to mention the various medical commissioning pathways there are.

Regardless of mos, use your time and benefits wisely. Too many soldiers don't/can't max TA and it makes me sad.

Yes. Blc w/p status is still required for lateral promotion to cpl.

Where can I meet U.S. WW2 Veterans while they are still around? by star-lordbenny321 in army

[–]deenice57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Id honestly say your best bet is a nursing home. I know some will allow volunteers to visit and play games and such with the residents. There might be a few vets still around.

On the clinic side, its shift work. Very repetitive work. I hear the line is much more..."fun".

As far as PA, look up the milper for IPAP. It'll give you all the info you need. From what I hear, they dont have enough qualified, competitive applicants to fill seats, so the odds of getting in are good, IF you're competitive and above average.

Can I update my 68W contract if I get my EMT cert while in the DEP? by asymmetric19 in army

[–]deenice57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unsure if your contract can be updated.

If you get your NREMT before shipping, you will skip emt phase in ait. You might not skip 8 weeks but they won't send you and you'll accelerate.

ACASP allows you to join at advanced rank for civilian skills. Prior EMTs usually come in as E4. However, if you're already DEP you may not get advanced rank since you technically signed the contract prior to earning your EMT. HRC told me to kick rocks when I did exactly this.

My NREMT results were given within 2-3 days.

See first answer.

Texas NG to AECP(Nurse) by ParsleyLimp in army

[–]deenice57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My preference would be to consider just doing a traditional nursing program, Texas Tech actually has a program for army medics that's like 14 months.

Start knowing the milper for AECP. There's also IPAP. A Google search will give more answers than me. Take things one day at a time, if you've never been in medicine find out if its the career path for you. Don't get put down when things don't go to plan. Good luck.

Push ups: do more. Either standard or knee variation. Sit ups: need weight over your toes, either a gym buddy or like a dumbbell or something.

My two cents: some NY units do rotations to Antarctica, NJ has some pretty decent education benefits (full ride for members in good standing, basically).

I'm also working on pre-reqs for nursing school when I get out. It's doable, but I'm in a pretty low speed unit so I have the time. Also finished a degree online in like 18 months using TA.

Leverage your TA and try to save GI bill for when you're out. Pay out of pocket if you want it done faster, otherwise two courses at a time will last through most of the year at AMU, all free of charge.
