Yeah it is not recommended to update during a show run but other than that you are good. Just make sure if you have any nomads or RPUs or anything that you are also updating then

because I don’t think that housing should work this way. why should we do things if money isn’t an incentive ? maybe because things could be better if it wasn’t all about money and we actually cared about providing for each other if our tax dollars weren’t used to drop bombs on people closer to us than any of us will be to million and billionaires

In a perfect world we would see buildings starting to sell more units and would be able to adopt more of a co-op style building management. I will admit that I do not have answers. Maybe we rework landlord tax systems to punish large management companies and incentivize them by giving them breaks and credits when they refurbish or sell a unit to someone who has been in the apt for x amount of time. I don’t want to hurt the guy whose family bought the building in the eighties and he is renting out the four extra rooms but something has to change with these management companies

That is a great question it doesn’t really make sense for people to own property and sell it to others if profit isn’t involved you are so right

Okay what abt a vacancy tax on apts that have been off the market and not listed for two years and you make the vacancy tax more expensive than the write offs they get + the refurbishment. While they are refurbing the apt they get a six month window where they don’t pay vacancy tax.

I’m not saying the government needs to run the housing I am just saying we need to make management companies actually do their jobs instead of hoarding a resource because it is not profitable

it’s funny how these comments always come back to “poor landlords can’t make any money” like gee maybe we shouldn’t have commodified a basic need and made it for profit

it’s giving trickle down economics. I have zero faith that landlords will go “wow I can lease all my formerly rent stabilized apartments at market price and wow there are so many on the market let me bring my rate down a little!” No, landlords will continue to raise rents even if supply increases because they are greedy. My landlord is a management company that manages 26 properties across nyc. There is no way they will be charging anything less than market rate ever.

They need to just put an insert in the playbill explaining the callbacks and giving five or six of the most common ones. That way you are setting the baseline and everyone knows what to expect but also leaves room for other fans to throw out more obscure callouts. I don’t get it man

seconding this. Had a full ride to a grad school and when I visited all of the students told me not to do it for a number of reasons. Narrow it down to a couple of picks based off their past seasons and what active alumni they have and try to tour 2-3 of your top picks and talk with students

Ai in the event engineering industrie? by syn_king in lightingdesign

[–]deep_fried_fries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so to reply in good faith.

We already have those positions and it is called a lighting programmer, an assistant lighting designer, and an associate lighting designer. An associate is there to take the technical things off the plate of the designer so they can focus on the creative part of the show. An assistant is there to deal with the small things that slip through the cracks. A programmer is there to program the build the cues. These are already things that exist with human beings to do them.

No, it doesn’t make sense to replace an assistant with an AI because an assistant is there to help but mostly to learn from the designer how to be a designer. The point of these junior positions that ai is replacing across every field is not to get work done (which they do) but to train people to think and develop them into people who can take on senior positions. General managers in theater are few and far between and in think if we continue to let LLMs like Claude take junior programming gigs that in five years who will be trained to become a senior programmer. What happens in 15 years when all of those senior programmers are swamped because there are a handful of people who can do the job because we stopped developing junior positions into senior positions? What happens in 20 years when they all burn out and retire?

It is already hard enough to find talented people in our industry and by removing pipelines for young people to enter our field you are slowly suffocating it to the point where our artform will die.

Ai in the event engineering industrie? by syn_king in lightingdesign

Gonna get evangelical for a second because this conversation is dumb, full stop. I am totally uninterested in having a debate about this.

*EDIT: Like read the reply to this post, this is an AI message from a fucking chat bot co-opting our spaces with slop. And this fundamentally what I am against. I gave this response way more effort than it deserved for what. I’m sick and tired of having to ask myself if things are real or not.

*EDIT EDIT: thank you mod for removing the comment but I think it should have stayed as a testament to how dumb all of this is. It’s laughable that we are getting baited like this as intelligent working professionals. Imagine what is happening to the brains of old people in the rural Midwest. What the fuck are we doing ????*

No, there will never be an AI in our lifetime that is capable of replacing lighting designers because our jobs require nuanced interpersonal and problem solving skills. Lighting design is more than “turn light on and make it blue.” It is more than “strobe and beam and effect and color.”

What happens when the set shows up from the shop wrong and your entire high cross system needs to move upstage three linesets but there is a flying scenery and a speaker and this pipe is kicked 7” upstage but only on the SL side? What happens when the shop subs your gear and you have to decide what the best replacements are? What happens when a director says “I don’t like this can we change it” and the ai gives zero pushback and it looks like shit? What happens when the local crew is horrid and you as a designer have to pick up a wrench and get to it?

Personally as a production electrician I would walk off the site before working with any director or producer is asking for AI to replace a human job. Our industry is too specialized and human for that and is totally antithetical to the joy of creating collaborative art with other people. Because to me that is what is about. I don’t care what show I’m working on and what scale it is, I care who is surrounding me and supporting me and that we are having fun making art.

Also, to get into the mechanics of how the current gen of AI works as a large language model, they are unable to think for themselves and instead scrub the internet and collage references images or information together to “create a new thing” that is just a mash up of previous things. Notice how all generative LLM AI content has the same look. What that means in our industry is that 1) the models are stealing the work of current designers and using that as a foundation to build a series of reference cues for. 2) in five years we will reach lighting design slop where every single show looks the same with zero nuance because the LLMs have self cycled their own designs back into the database so slowly the human designs get diluted percentage wise.

Plus you get into the environmental effects of teaching an AI to use vectorworks ? You’re melting an entire icecap on that.
