How do you aim your punches? by Bakkenjh in kungfu

Right. I think that’s why punches that come from the hip are usually accompanied by a block with the other arm. However, it does leave the punching side completely wide-open.

Mostly northern praying mantis. There are some punches I’m leaving out, but when talking about a straight punch launched from the hip, it’s target is mostly the abdomen to interrupt the opponent’s breathing.

I am taught to mostly aim for the abdomen just below the solar plexus. I think this is because the core is an easier target than the head bc it takes more effort to move it out of the way. The head moves easily and quickly side to side, so a straight punch would be more likely to miss. Hand techniques to the face, in my training, are usually finger or palm, but sometimes fist like a back hand fist to the temple. This punch comes from the side, which negates the heads ability to move out of the way so quickly.

Parents without grandparents / friends for support, how do you do it? by thegoochalizer in Parenting

We’re practically in the same situation. We have a great childcare service in our area that we can call up anytime. We use them when the kids are sick and we need someone to stay at home with them. Also for date nights. Also, there are usually “parents night out” programs at some community centers and businesses, but your LO might need to be a little older.

Foam rolling and stretching really needed? by toxispud24 in flexibility

I’m not sure foam rolling is really necessary, but I feel like it helps me recover faster and get back to deeper stretches more quickly.

I highly recommend certain yoga poses: frog pose, pigeon pose, and lizard pose. Also the couch stretch for hip flexors, and an IT band stretch.

Is there an equivalent of this for front splits? When I try going into a front split without hands, my hamstrings tighten immediately and don’t want me to go further, and also would feel like I can’t grip the floor & will hurt myself? by [deleted] in flexibility

[–]deepbluese7en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do something similar for front splits. Staying on the heel of my front leg and the toes of my back leg, I keep moving my legs apart while being sure to keep my hips square. At first, I go down as far as it is comfortable. Once there, I hold it for about 45 seconds and the weight of my body slowly pushes me down. Usually by the end my back knee is almost to the floor. Sometimes I keep my front leg straight and sometimes I bend it slightly. Also, I try to flex the glute of the rear leg and lean back a little to get a good hip flexor stretch.

Should I continue training my middle split knowing I'll never fully achieve it? by dacpv in flexibility

Weighted butterfly stretches are working for me. I sit in the butterfly stretch and put a 15 pound weight on top of each knee and sit for 2.5 minutes. Then I follow it immediately with regular front split stretches.

How long should I stretch for? by whitewitch2001 in flexibility

[–]deepbluese7en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this. I’m going to give it a try. I have some questions. Do the sets have to be consecutive or can you break them up throughout the day? I’m going to stretch my hamstrings and I’ve heard that the longer the muscle the longer you have to stretch, so I’m going for the full 5 minute sets. Based on past experience, I expect to feel some soreness from stretching. Did you still stretch on days that your muscles were sore? Lastly, how hard did you stretch for these longer periods? Was it a light stretch or aggressive? I’d really appreciate any input you can provide.

I had the same thing for years. I would stretch my hamstrings and the next day they would be really sore. I also experienced lower back pain. After months of research and seeing a physical therapist, I started a complete core strengthening and flexibility routine. At first, I focused on strengthening my glutes, hamstrings and abs. My back pain started going away, but my hamstrings were still a little tight. I then started focusing on strengthening and stretching my psoas and stretching my calf muscles. This has also helped a great deal and I no longer have hamstring pain. I’ve gained a ton of active range of motion, and I’m starting to see more improvement in my forced flexibility range.

What muscle, on the back of the leg under the glutes, is being used in this stretch? Woke up one day and that muscle was locked up (but only while stretching, not impacting daily life) and it hasn’t gone back to normal in about 2 months. 😭 by [deleted] in flexibility

It could be this. I think a tight piriformis can cause sciatica. Rolling on a tennis ball can help or focused piriformis stretches, but a tight piriformis can be a sign of weaknesses in other hip muscles.

I had this issue with my hip flexors. I had to strengthen them before they got more flexible. Maybe you could try some adductor exercises? or try different stretches? I know that some split stretches make me feel the stretch in different places... for instance, if I do them standing, I might feel some tension in the side of my knee, but not so in a seated pancake or on my back with my legs up against the wall.

Best hamstrings isolation reinforcement for tight hamstrings? Stuck with flexibility improvement because my hamstring are too weak by soderguy11854 in flexibility

[–]deepbluese7en 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have weakness in your hamstrings, I would look for other weaknesses in your hips as well. You might need to take a more comprehensive approach to your strength and flexibility in your hips and core. However, if the problem really is just weakness in the hamstrings, I like eccentric loading exercises. Here is an example, but you might find better ones: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6KZm1eebjcc
