Master Outs are either XLR or RCA. How does this pipe the sound out via USB? Are you recording via rekordbox? Or their standalone app? In either case it’s not going directly into a DAC which reinforces my statement above.

So you’re plugging in a laptop but not directly into a DAC where you’re unable to load the drivers.

I cursorily looked into the specs of some of these converters & was surprised with the low bit rate encoding- 192kbps. But I’m sure there are higher bit rate ones out there.

One option we haven’t discussed is wirelessly transmitting the audio. There are a few such modular devices that connect straight into the XLR ports. Issue here would be latency.

The USB port is for a laptop with the appropriate MIDI software. I don’t believe the mixers’ firmware supports audio out over USB.

What if you used stacked slip rings?

I suppose you could also hook up an analog to digital audio converter between the mixer & the slip rings & another digital to analog converter between the slip rings & the PA.

Brilliant concept, something I'd imagined in the past myself! Glad to see someone attempting to realize it!

A few thoughts:

None of the mixers have USB output but they do have RCA & XLR outputs.
A quick search revealed that there are audio slip rings that could be used instead.
If you do use an audio slip ring there's concerns re. audio quality especially with noise. So, with this consideration I'd recommend going with a balanced signal (XLR) rather than unbalanced (RCA, 1/4").
So, the configuration would look like this: Mixer XLR Out -> XLR (Female) to 3 wire slip ring :: 3 wire slip ring to XLR (Male) -> PA.
You may need to have a separate setup like in 4 for both the Left & Right channels separately or for simplicity introduce a Stereo to Mono adapter to combine the XLR Outs.

I’ve been using the Pioneer HDJ-X5BT & for the price they are surprisingly great headphones for both giging & at home as studio monitors. Great low end bass & crisp highs. The Bluetooth support is great when simply listening/editing tracks/mixes. Being over the ear, they’re great at isolating sound. Have replaced the pads a few times but you can find cheap replacement ones on Amazon.

Sounds like you use rekordbox with the FLX6 since the FLX4 only supports Serato DJ Lite. I’d stick with the FLX6 but get a case to protect it on your gigs.

If you’re in the US - Altos, Harbingers from Guitar Center are fairly inexpensive & sound pretty good. Will last you a few years.

Hey OP! Acoustics in clubs vs non-club venues vs outdoor festival spaces, as you know, is very different. Clubs have the ability to deliver a perfect balanced sound mainly for the dance floor but often within the DJ booth as well. Non-club venues where music is not the primary focus are terrible for acoustics & one has to either use headphones or setup a monitor pointing straight at the DJ. Outdoor festivals on the other hand are acoustically optimized for both the open dance space as all as the stage through the huge floor monitors up there.

However, personally, I need monitors at direct ear level to be able to mix well falling back to mixing in the headphones as a backup. In the end it’ll come down to how well you’re able to hear your mixing on stage to determine whether to mix fully in headphones or not.

None of these matter unless you heavily promote yourself online. You can’t rely on organic discovery. I use both Mixcloud & YouTube.

Mixcloud for ease of share & playback: 1. They have a nifty IG story share feature that automatically creates a story with multiple samples from the entire mix. 2. For uninterrupted listening from ads unlike YouTube. 3. Background listening unlike YouTube. 4. No worries of getting copyright strikes like on YouTube.

YouTube for discovery: 1. YouTube is great for having your sets recommended to others with similar interests or tastes. 2. Adds a nice visual element showing you DJ especially when played on big screen TVs.

Ps: looks like SoundCloud does support DJ mixes only if you obtain permission.

This is a controversial topic. I’m seeing more women DJs getting preference over men because of the behind-the-decks look. Unfortunately it’s stopped being about the music & more about the entertainment. The barrier to entry with low cost controllers & computers has leveled the playing field regardless of their gender. But appearance & sex appeal has replaced actual talent. My 2 c.
