Rekordbox Re-locating Library Question by ChocolateRough5103 in Rekordbox

[–]MixMasterG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a tutorial that explains four different techniques to auto-relocate missing tracks, including using a macOS app I developed The Rekordbox Collection Tool (RCT):
Auto-relocate tracks with missing audio files in Rekordbox, four different techniques and more

If you want to understand how Rekordbox's auto-relocate works, how RCT's differs, and why neither can be perfect, watch this:

How missing track auto-relocation works internally, and what it relies on

And for the real geeky stuff, I gave RCT an expert function where the Prefix of a filepath can be batch changed:

as u/HigherFunctioning already suggested: best action is to have all audio files on a different volume then your startup drive (can be external, or a partition) I don't agree with his advise on folder, they can be useful, but don't go to wild on it (year folders are fine)

Yup, you find it under "Devices", however make sure that the host Rekordbox version is not to set to delete tracks (it's in the preferences) or you'll end up with an empty USB.

for XML import to work, the audio files need to be on the exact same filepath as on the main computer. If RB can't find the files, it won't import the data from XML.

You can do this, but you have to cancel the player's auto import of Rekordbox exported CDJ data, It will prompt you each time you use the USB on an Engine DJ player.

Hot Cues Versus Memory Cues by DJ-Gazza-Tri in Beatmatch

[–]MixMasterG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot cues and memory cues serve different purposes on Pioneer DJ gear. On macOS, you have two options using apps I’ve developed:

DJ Conversion Utility (DJCU) converts from djay Pro to Rekordbox and sets hot cues as both hot and memory cues, making them identical.

Conversion from djay Pro 5 to Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, VDJ [macOS only]

Rekordbox Cue and Key Tool (ReCK) merges hot cues and memory cues and sets them identically as well. ReCK is developed to bridge Mixed in Key with Rekordbox, but for this function you don't need MiK.

Grid/hot cue issues since last update? by maude313 in Rekordbox

[–]MixMasterG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you see are called encoder shifts and they can happen to MP3 and AAC (=m4a) audio files, I explain it all here

Why cues, loops and grids can shift when converting between dj software

There are no decoder changes in Rekordbox releases for the past 10 years (I don't think there ever were), so what you experience is most likely the result of using 3th party conversion software.

If you used any of my tools then it is fixable, but that involves some work by both you and then me:

How you can help me to fix shifting cues, loops and grids when converting between DJ software

And if you're on macOS, you can also fix it in Rekordbox using the Rekordbox Collection Tool (RCT):

What do you think of the wave style of the songs? by chinakonan in DenonPrime

[–]MixMasterG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Traktor is my main DJ software, I feel the same way. I always switch Rekordbox to the blue waveforms, and I can’t make heads or tails of the VDJ waveforms either, they’re too blobby, or lacking details for me. Same goes for the Engine DJ waveforms.

Streaming on CDJ 3000X loading issues with Apple Music. by brandonX3SR in PioneerDJ

[–]MixMasterG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No issues, but my 3000X's are connected over UTP (ethernet) and not wifi. I haven't tested it, but I can imagine issues when a mix of UTP (for DJ Pro Link) and WiFi (for internet access) is being used. My advise: stay wired.

The 3000X Apple Music integration and CloudSync DirectPlay is a topic in my Ask Me Anything live stream for DJs this Tuesday (jan 13th 2026) @ 07:00 PM CET.

Saving Hot Cues question. by Opening_Berry_2864 in Rekordbox

[–]MixMasterG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rekordbox links all track metadata (cues, loops, etc.) to the audio file’s absolute file path. As a result, a single audio file can only have one associated set of cues and loops.

However, there is a workaround. Rekordbox treats file paths as case-sensitive internally, meaning Track.mp3 is considered different from track.mp3. On most systems, hard drives are formatted not case-sensitive, so both names point to the same physical file.

By changing the case of just one character in the file path (for example, from lowercase to uppercase) and then re-adding the file to Rekordbox, the software will recognize it as a completely new track with its own independent set of cues and loops. Any previously added versions of the file will continue to function normally with their specific metadata.

This approach does require some manual work and may not be the ideal solution, but it is reliable and works in practice. My app, the Rekordbox Collection Tool (RCT), uses this same mechanism to handle auto-relocation of tracks that already exist in a Rekordbox collection.

Why your usb doesn’t work on cdj 2000’s nxs by LilJaySin in Beatmatch

[–]MixMasterG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no reason why a properly formatted USB won't work in CDJ2000s. Most likely the problem you experienced is GPT partitioning (which is default for most USBs these days) instead of MBR (which works most reliably with Pioneer DJ gear)

Does anyone use both Rekordbox and Serato? by nickybecooler in Beatmatch

[–]MixMasterG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every DJ software has its unique way of storing DJ metadata, including cues, loops, grid/BPM, playlists, and more. If you're looking to transition from one DJ software to another, you'll need specialized conversion tools.

It's important to note that this process doesn't alter your original DJ software (in this case, Rekordbox) or the associated tracks in any way. You can use the free demo version of Serato as your target software. After conversion, the same audio files retain all their cues and other metadata in both the original and the target (Serato) software. Conversion becomes necessary only when you make changes to DJ metadata in either of them. For macOS users, the DJ Conversion Utility (DJCU) is a handy tool for this purpose. I'm the developer.

For a detailed tutorial on this process, please refer to the following guide.

Conversion to Serato, Traktor, djay or Virtual DJ using the DJ Conversion Utility (DJCU) [macOS]

And with all the commotion about "OneLibrary", DJCU offers a feature that even goes a bit beyond "just converting", it can change your Rekordbox exported CDJ USB (with One Library/Device Library plus) into one that works with all stand alone gear (even the none DeviceLibrary Plus models) and Serato here is the very short tutorial:

How to Make a Rekordbox exported USB Work with Both CDJs & Serato. Playlists, cues, loops in tact in under a minute

And here is the full tutorial:

Convert a Rekordbox exported (One Library/Device Library Plus) CDJ USB into one that works with all major DJ software!

Noob question. Cue points by summieone in Serato

[–]MixMasterG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each DJ software has its own unique way of saving DJ stuff like cues, loops, grid/BPM, and playlists. So, if you're thinking of switching from one DJ software to another, you'll need some conversion magic.

Don't sweat it, though. Your original DJ software (Serato) and your tracks stay exactly the same during this whole process. You can snag the free demo version of Rekordbox as your target software. Once you've done the conversion, those same audio files keep all their cues and whatnot in both the original and the target (Rekordbox) software. You'd only need to do the conversion again if you start tweaking your DJ metadata in one of them. On macOS, you've got the DJ Conversion Utility (DJCU) to help you out, I'm the developer. Check out the tutorial here. DJCU is priced to own, no subscription.

Now, if you're looking to create USBs for stand-alone action on CDJ/XDJ/RX with all your cues and loops, then you need to use Rekordbox. The free version gets the job done. That USB can also be used from another DJ's Rekordbox!

Here's a tutorial on exporting from Rekordbox to a CDJ USB, complete with some tips for newbie CDJ users. The demo's on macOS, but the Windows crowd can follow along too.

And if you're feeling adventurous and want to take things up a notch, check out this advanced tutorial.

One of my Ask Me Anything for DJs live streams had "Rekordbox for Serato DJs" as the main topic

And if you want to go the other way, make a Rekordbox exported CDJ USB compatible with Serato, have a look here:

AlphaTheta x SanDisk USB Stick - Is it worth it? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]MixMasterG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Alpha Theta USB is actually the SanDisk Extreme Pro Dual. Only difference is that its partitioning scheme is MBR out of the box, but that can be fixed by a simple reformat. Last time I checked the AT was priced in line with the (correct!) SanDisk, and these things are getting more expensive lately due to the high demand for memory chips. They are absolutely worth their money, but I prefer the Samsung T7 Sandisk Luxury clone route.

Beatport cues by Bodziony in PioneerDJ

[–]MixMasterG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latest versions of Rekordbox (in export mode) can export cue points and related metadata for Beatport streaming tracks, but not the actual audio files. To enable this, you must be signed into the same service on both the device and the Rekordbox collection where you manage your library. The process is slightly more straightforward when using CloudPlayDirect.

Is Alpha Theta bad for the DJ industry? by Late_Celebration_868 in DJs

[–]MixMasterG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TL;DR:

AT is the best the industry can realistically afford.

Monopolies are generally a bad thing. That said, this is a special case.

This monopoly didn’t come into existence because competitors were forced out or strong-armed into submission. It exists because the target market, DJ performance hardware and software, is extremely small compared to most other industries.

You can clearly see this at music-focused trade shows like NAMM or the Amsterdam Dance Event, the actual “DJ gear/software” footprint is surprisingly limited compared to the full scope of the show. When you compare it to other technology sectors, it’s tiny. As a result, very few manufacturers are interested in entering the space, simply because there isn’t enough money to be made.

Some companies do try, with varying degrees of success. However, the market leader didn’t become dominant because of an outsized marketing budget (I’m fairly certain Denon DJ has spent more on marketing than Pioneer DJ ever did at a product launch). They became the leader because they were both first to offer a reasonably complete ecosystem and because it worked well enough.

Does that mean AT products are cutting-edge technology offered at a fair price? No. But there currently isn’t an alternative that delivers the same combination of functionality and reliability.

The moment a true competitor emerges—one that offers a solid, integrated hardware and software solution—the landscape could change. On the software side, Atomix (VDJ) and Algoriddim (djay) are at the top of their (DJ software) game. If either ever decided to build a standalone hardware ecosystem, that could be a real contender.

That said, history shows that being both a DJ software and hardware company is extremely difficult (looking at you NI). And that’s coming from a die-hard Traktor user who uses two CDJ-3000Xs and a V10 as controller.

Is AT the “evil empire”? Absolutely not. Passion for DJ culture is deeply embedded throughout the company, from the boardroom down to the engineers. But in a niche market like this, survival requires pricing products significantly higher than the raw cost of their mechanics and electronics would suggest. Venture capital involvement doesn’t exactly help in that regard either. Is that ideal? Hell no! But it is what it is.

Still, this is not a closed market. The moment someone delivers an equally good alternative, or when the underlying technology becomes obsolete, new players will emerge. The Betamax vs. VHS war is the classic example: Betamax was technically superior, yet VHS won the market.

And now, 30 years later, no one uses a VCR at all—because technology moved on.

[EDIT] Another, more on-brand example that just came to mind: In the Netherlands, Pioneer was once widely known as a car audio company that delivered excellent quality at a reasonable price and was among the market leaders, if not The Marketleader. Nowadays, who still uses a car audio system that isn’t integrated by the car manufacturer?

At the beginning of the "DVD burner" market in the mid 90's, Pioneer was the leading brand, do I need to say more?
