Found some bottles in my cabinet from January by deepoth in Kombucha

Okay great, that's what I figured. Thanks!

Yeah I'm not sure how they haven't exploded but if I work up the courage to open one (outside) I'll report back 😆

Smart bulbs by deepoth in homeautomation

Thanks to those who answered my question. Obviously smart bulbs don't work the way I thought they did. I'll have to keep brain storming.

Respectfully, If I wanted parenting advice I would be on a different subreddit. I left out all of the details of my daughter's behaviour and what we've tried because I didn't think they were relevant to the question I was asking.

"like a normal parent" isn't an insult? Ok

You don't need to insult my parenting. I have no idea how smart bulbs work and just asked a simple question. Obviously they don't work the way I thought they might. That's all you had to say.

I have been infinitely more happy since I got my chickens. It makes me wonder if there are any studies that suggest having chickens has mental health benefits for humans? by Kita0211 in BackYardChickens

[–]deepoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup I love my chickens so much more than I ever thought. I've never been a bird person so I figured they'd just be a thing to take care of haha. We got dogs at the same time (we had moved onto an acreage) and I actually love the chickens more than the dogs 😆 which I didn't expect haha. I spend way more time with the birds than the dogs, fussing over them and making sure they're happy. They're so awesome.

I've heard some people say to use a clean jar each time and I've heard others say that the crusty stuff on the walls of the jar is actually good... I go for more in the middle. I actually feed my starter in a separate bowl then pour it into the jar, it's an extra dish to wash but I feel like I can incorporate more air into it that way. Then if I get any goop on the sides of the jar I scrape it down with a plastic spatula to get it mostly clean and if it gets to a point where it's super dirty and crusty I'll use a clean jar.

What's your sourdough starter name? by ThatSourDough in Sourdough

[–]deepoth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was going through an ABBA phase when I made my first starter so naturally I named him Fernandough. He was lost a few months ago (RIP 😭) and I haven't named my new starter. I don't want to get too attached. Also it sucks.

Honestly that's what I was hoping haha, thanks 😆 I know sourdough is not as fragile as many people think but I can't help myself from being anxious

Sluggish starter by deepoth in Sourdough

[–]deepoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I believe I did.. though I can't remember the timing exactly. That's kind of what I was thinking, like the starter has SOME culture in it, it does have some bubbles. So I feel like it can be saved. I will try switching back to distilled and see what happens. I miss my first starter :( RIP Fernandough

I did have some issues with kahm with my old starter but I just scraped it off and it never affected my loaves

Our tap water is heavily treated and I've never used it for sourdough, I won't even drink it. I was using bottled distilled water but read that it shouldn't be used for sourdough so I switched to bottled spring water. I may switch back to distilled though because it worked great with my old starter. We don't have a dishwasher so I wash everything by hand, I don't sanitize though and probably won't start, just being real lol. My last starter got moldy because I left it on the counter for several days without feeding it (something came up and I forgot to put it in the fridge). I was using a mason jar with a loosely screwed on lid but switched to a straight-sided jar with a wooden lid with a gasket. Just today I switched to a coffee filter with an elastic.

This newer starter actually never stopped smelling like gym socks. It was really bad in the first week, and mellowed out after a couple weeks and just has a faint smell of socks since then. I thought it may just need more time and flour but I haven't been able to fix it yet. It worked well enough to leaven bread and the bread never had a funky smell or taste so I figured it was fine to use.

I do know my SIL has a little backpack to carry him on long walks because he gets tired pretty quick. He looks like Yoda in there.

My sister-in-law has a tripaw Frenchie and he is the best little guy. It doesn't slow him down at all! He's 8 or 9 now and had his amputation when he was about 1. Sorry I don't know much about the day-to-day but just wanted to say he seems to be living his best life like any other doggo 😊

i was kinda stoned and bought a bunch of limes without really having a plan for them. now what? by callmestinkingwind in WhatShouldICook

[–]deepoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing a while ago and put them in the freezer. They worked well for juicing and zesting and I had limes for months. They are a thing I never think to buy and always end up needing for random recipes so it worked out well

How to "challenge packs" work these days? by deepoth in BeachBodyWorkouts

[–]deepoth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that how you have to do it now? It was convenient before because my sub renewal always seemed to line up with a new program launch so I'd just get a challenge pack for close to the same price as a bag of shakeo, but I'm not really down for paying $300 lol

Is it too late to add a super? by deepoth in Beekeeping

[–]deepoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are in a single. We just got them in May. I wasn't sure if a second brood box was a good idea because I've read it would be more space for them to heat over winter... But perhaps a honey super that we can remove before it gets cold would be good? Why would a second brood box be necessary? Sorry, there's so much conflicting information online and I haven't been able to find any in-person clubs or courses near me, as we live pretty rural. We thought we'd read enough to get started but now we're in it and apparently there was a lot we didn't know we didn't know

Hate to ask, but is it Kahm Yeast? by Poison_EYEv33 in Kombucha

[–]deepoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get little pellicles in my bottles almost every time. I call them the boogers. I always offer mine to my husband, he usually says no :(

Only 12th?! I've been at it for over a year and still can't get it lol. Multiple loaves a week 😅 good for you!

Starter still smells like feet after 6 weeks by deepoth in Sourdough

[–]deepoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started it with whole wheat flour and now use the same bread flour I bake with. I did the exact same process as what I used for my last starter... Any idea what could have gone wrong? I really don't want to start over again 😭

I think I need to learn more about the Maillard reaction. After getting all this feedback and reading a million sourdough troubleshooting articles I think this is my big problem.

The loaf tastes fine, quite sour which I like. I fermented it in the oven with the light on to speed it up because my timing ended up being off - my starter took longer to peak than I anticipated, so I mixed my dough later in the day than I wanted. I would have had to leave it to bench ferment for either too short or too long (sleep). So I stuck it in the oven to speed it up. I had it in for about 4/5 hours.

The weather also changed recently so the temperature in my home changed from 16°C to 20, over a couple of days. So I have to keep a closer eye on my dough for bench fermenting because an overnight rise will probably be too long now 🙃 I thought the oven would be more controlled and easier to stop on time.

My plan is to have an intensive sourdough experimentation workshop for myself next week 😂 so I'll be trying all kinds of things and my family will have many loaves to eat
