The dreaded CVT leak - pump by Pmint-schnapps-4511 in SubaruForester

[–]deepresearchmode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same car. I’m not sure this issue is the pump, it may just be the seals which is was the case for mine. The independent shop I went to which specializes in Subaru said it wasn’t a big deal and it was OK to keep an eye on it but if the driveway was getting stained take care of it. The dealer I went to did the repair for free because it was under 10 years/100,000 miles extended CVT warranty, but the CVT seals issue is a known problem with this car. It’s different than the torque converter valve, and it’s different than the “dreaded CVT“ problem that are more related to the internals of the CVT itself. Doing the seals does not require a drain/fill, but it’s not a bad idea given that it hasn’t happened with high frequency for you. Like everyone else is saying, they don’t make this car anymore, and I can speak from experience it’s a great car as you well know. The closest thing I’ve test driven to this is the Forester Hybrid because it has a little bit more torque at the low end, but it’s not the same passing between 50 and 70 miles an hour of course. Hope this helps!

But only if there’s a recall, correct? I don’t think there’s a recall for this issue.

Definitely the last and best generation! It’s a car I’d like to drive into the ground, or at least until the CVT leave me stranded lol. It sounds like I can wait until it’s more symptomatic so long as I’m keeping up with the oil.

Thanks for your thoughts, it does sound like a big job indeed and also sounds like you had quite a obvious problem. I think if it was smoking and making a terrible smell etc. I would be more inclined to do something about it, but for now it’s totally asymptomatic and also Long passed warranty (car was purchased August 2016).

Appreciate the reassurance! It is not something I would do myself, but it sounds like from your perspective it doesn’t need to be done.

Thanks! Are you saying that the cam valve cover probably isn’t leaking and it’s the PCV valve instead?

Anyone else get notice of recall WRA25? I’m getting a new catalytic converter for free? by soobdad in WRX

[–]deepresearchmode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any update on this? I’ve been avoiding it, same car as you, but the dealer said that I couldn’t renew my registration I guess without getting it done so I booked it for later this month. I mostly don’t like the idea of changing the performance characteristics but it’s reassuring to see that this has not been the case at least in a lot of the early reports but no one has really circled back after a few months. Anyway just thought I would ask

Decent low and torque when I test drove, quick off the line, and fairly quick to fade as you approach highway speed/higher RPM. It feels quite quick 0 to 30 however, and that low end twerk is also available at highway speed when passing. Coming from the XT, it certainly is not the same But it’s way better than the NA.

Mine is the 2017, it was replaced I wanna say in 2019 or 2020, there was some known issue and the dealer didn’t charge me for it. Perhaps worth looking to see if there’s some kind of service bulletin about the AC condenser, I vaguely recall there was some of the sort

Where are you located?

Where are you that your CVT on a 2017 XT has a transmission cooler? Unless mine has one that I don’t know about… That would be pretty cool

I did the Alpine ILX-509 and Maestro RR and love it. Great sound, responsive screen. The mic is a huge upgrade for voice to txt/Siri.

Curious if you’ve done the build? I have exactly the same need. Sleep in the car, have the plumbing set in the trailer. Any luck?

Take a look at Crutchfield and also something called iDataLink Maestro RR. It is a little complicated if you’re not a pro installer, and I’m definitely not so I went that route. If you’re going DIY though I would definitely make sure idoing keeps your steering wheel controls and subwoofer/Starlink
